Living in urban interstices: the survival practices of excluded Gypsies in Italian borderlands.

The paper focuses on the case-studies of nomad camps in Italy, where groups of “gypsies” live in condition of ghetto. The nomad camps generally constitute a world out of the city, as an encompassed microcosm. They represent a borderland or a grey zone. The only interaction between “them” and “us” happens when Romanì exit from the camp and cross the municipal streets. Roma people develop a capacity to survive in urban interstices. These practices consist in unusual welfare forms of material help for day by day survival, while living in a condition of human rights negation by majority society members.
Presence of potentially pathogenic free-living amoebae strains from well water samples in Guinea-Bissau

Free-living amoebae (FLA) include opportunistic pathogens such as Naegleria fowleri, Balamuthia mandrillaris, and the genera Sappinia and Acanthamoeba. In this study, a survey was conducted in order to evaluate the presence of potentially pathogenic amoebic strains in water samples collected from wells located in the western part of Guinea-Bissau. The samples were left to precipitate for 48 hours and then the sediments were seeded on non-nutrient agar plates containing Escherichia coli spread and cultures were checked daily for the presence of FLA. This performance museum, which is the Antonio Pasqualino International Puppet Museum, focuses on narration and trans- forms itself into a mnestic image, becomes a tool for intercultural mediation through the use of different artistic languages. Per due milioni di anni abbiamo vissuto a contatto con il fuori, non nel buio delle grotte, ma in luoghi intermedi tra il chiuso e l’aperto: spalle alla roccia, occhi nella valle. Pochi secoli di civiltà industriale e di urbanesimo soffocante ci hanno abituato a vivere in scatole da scarpe. Tutto l’abitare va ripensato da qui, dalla constatazione che eravamo fatti per praterie e foreste, che ci piaceva e ancora ci piace vivere nell’aperto, che facevamo case temporanee, leggere, che avevamo di meno e immaginavamo di più. Sono le esperienze più estreme, quelle del limite e del lontano, che hanno qualcosa da dire sul fare casa oggi: capanne, bivacchi, tende, rifugi, ripari di fortuna, un’archi…
