Seminal plasma biochemistry and spermatozoa characteristics of Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua L.) of wild and cultivated origin

2011

Abstract Our objectives were to compare spermatozoa activity, morphology, and seminal plasma (SP) biochemistry between wild and cultivated Atlantic cod ( Gadus morhua ). Swimming velocities of wild cod spermatozoa were significantly faster than those of cultivated males. Wild males had a significantly larger spermatozoa head area, perimeter, and length, while cultivated males had more circular heads. Total monounsaturated fatty acids and the ratio of n−3/n−6 were significantly higher in sperm from wild males, while total n−6 from cultivated males was significantly higher than the wild males. Significantly higher concentrations of the fatty acids C14:0, C16:1n−7, C18:4n−3, C20:1n−11, C20:1n−…

Bio-predictive tablet disintegration: Effect of water diffusivity, fluid flow, food composition and test conditions

2013

Abstract Food intake may delay tablet disintegration. Current in vitro methods have little predictive potential to account for such effects. The effect of a variety of factors on the disintegration of immediate release tablets in the gastrointestinal tract has been identified. They include viscosity of the media, precipitation of food constituents on the surface of the tablet and reduction of water diffusivity in the media as well as changes in the hydrodynamics in the surrounding media of the solid dosage form. In order to improve the predictability of food affecting the disintegration of a dosage form, tablet disintegration in various types of a liquefied meal has been studied under stati…

Interaction of sodium, lithium, caesium, and potassium ions with ascorbyl radicals.

1987

Abstract The influence of the concentration of sodium, lithium , caesium, and potassium ions as well as of the ionic strength of the solutions used on the dismutation rate of ascorbyl radicals has been investigated. While the dismutation rate was not influenced by Li+, it decreased, however, with increasing concentrations of the other ions investigated. The largest effect was obtained with Na+. This change in dismutation rate indicates a stabilizing effect on ascorbyl radical by these ions.

Metal-atom impact on the self-assembly of cup-and-ball metalloporphyrin–fullerene conjugates

2014

International audience; A fullerene ammonium derivative has been combined with different metalloporphyrin–crown ether receptors to generate very stable supramolecules. The combination of fullerene–porphyrin and ammonium–crown ether interactions leads to a strong chelate effect as evidenced by a high effective molarity (3.16 M). The different parameters influencing the stability of the supramolecular ensembles, in particular the nature of the metal in the porphyrin moiety, have been rationalized with the help of theoretical calculations thus providing new insights into fullerene–porphyrin interactions.

Improving accuracy of the intermediate splint in substantial intermaxillary sagittal discrepancies using an extra anterior anchorage point: technical…

2021

Background To describe a technical feature that increases the stability of the intermediate splint in patients where bimaxillary surgery with great maxillary/mandibular advancements are planned. Material and Methods Prospective evaluation of the intermediate splint dental vertical penetration in patients undergoing bimaxillary surgery where great sagittal discrepancy occur in the anterior sector between the upper and lower jaws when the intermediate splint is placed by adding an extra intermaxillary fixation (IMF) screw (2x9 mm) placed between the central incisors of the maxilla and fixed to the most anterior aspect of the intermediate splint following the direction of the sagittal maxillo-…

The knowledge of the axial dispersion is necessary for the determination of molecular weight distributions from gel permeation chromatography elution diagrams. This work deal with the determination of th…

Molar Mass Distribution and Size of Hydroxyethyl Starch Fractions Obtained by Continuous Polymer Fractionation

2002

By the use of continuous polymer fractionation (CPF) the initial polymer can be separated into fractions of different molar masses, which makes it possible to obtain hydroxyethyl starch (HES) fractions tailor-made for specific application. Two samples of HES (HES A and HES B) were fractionated by means of CPF. By size-exclusion chromatography-multi-angle laser light-scattering-differential refractive index (SEC/ MALLS/DRI) measurements it was shown that CPF is able to remove the low-molar-mass components and to adjust the samples to various desired molar masses with lower polydispersities than the original samples. In terms of the weight-average mean molar mass M w , the sol fractions have …

Reply to LoganDodge: 'stable isotopes challenge the perception of ocean sunfish Mola mola as obligate jellyfish predators'.

2013

Syvaranta et al. (2012) recently provided stable-isotope data from eight small-bodied ocean sunfish Mola mola (L. 1758) captured from the Italian fishing port of Camogli on the Ligurian coast. Representative data were also given for members of pelagic and neritic–coastal food webs. The level of 13C and 15N enrichment shown by M. mola relative to their putative obligate diet of gelatinous zooplankton (gelata) (based on the locally dominant Pelagia noctiluca and literature data) was used to question their obligate consumption of such prey. Furthermore, the M. mola were isotopically more similar to neritic rather than pelagic fishes captured locally, prompting the suggestion that juvenile M. m…

Stable isotopes challenge the perception of ocean sunfish Mola mola as obligate jellyfish predators

2011

Evidence is provided from stable isotope analysis that aggregations of small ocean sunfish Mola mola (total length <1 m) feed broadly within coastal food webs and their classification as obligate predators of gelatinous zooplankton requires revision.
