Stafne bone defects radiographic features in panoramic radiographs: Assessment of 91 cases.
2018
Background To evaluate 91 cases of Stafne bone defect (SBD) in panoramic radiographs (PR) to determine the prevalence of different SBD variants, considering age, gender, and side. Additionally, to assess the most frequent imaging features of SBD. Material and Methods Participant data were collected from 91 SBD cases with PR imaging. First, SBDs were classified according to their location, as anterior, posterior, or ramus variant. SBD imaging features were classified according to radiographic imaging findings, assessing margins, degree of internal radiolucency, shape, topographic relationship between the defect and mandibular border, location of the defect according to mandibular teeth, and …
Quality of life after upper third molar removal: a prospective longitudinal study
2017
Background Third molar extraction is a very common procedure in Dentistry. The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality of life (QoL) and satisfaction of patients undergoing extraction of an upper third molar under local anesthesia. A second objective was to describe the evolution of self-reported pain measured in a visual analogue scale (VAS) in the 7 days after surgery and its relationship with pre- and intraoperative factors. Material and Methods A prospective longitudinal cohort study was made. Fifty-five patients received a questionnaire assessing social and working isolation, eating and speaking ability, diet modifications, sleep impairment, physical appearance, discomfort at sut…
Incidence of impacted mandibular and maxillary third molars: a radiographic study in a Southeast Iran population
2011
Objectives: The aim of this study is to evaluate the position of impacted third molars based on the classifications of Pell & Gregory and Winter in a sample of Iranian patients. Study design: In this retrospective study, up to 1020 orthopantomograms (OPG) of the patients who were referred to the radiology clinics from October 2007 to January 2011 were evaluated. Data including the age, gender, the angulation type, width and depth of impaction were evaluated by statistical tests. Results: Among 1020 patients, 380(27.3%) were male and 640(62.7%) were female with the sex ratio was 1:1.7. Of the 1020 OPGs, 585 cases showed at least one impacted third molar, with significant difference between m…
Postoperative effects on lower third molars of using mouthwashes with super-oxidized solution versus 0.2% chlorhexidine gel : a randomized double-bli…
2018
Background The main objective of the present study is to evaluate the effects and possible benefits with regard to the postoperative period of lower third molar extractions, comparing the intraalveolar application of a bioadhesive gel of 0.2% chlorhexidine (CHX) to the use of a mouthwash with a super-oxidized solution, (SOS) Dermacyn® Wound Care (Oculus Innovative Sciences lnc., California, USA). Material and Methods A randomized double-blind study was carried out in 20 patients with a split-mouth design, with a total of 40 extractions of symmetrically impacted bilateral lower third molars. Patients were divided into two groups, a control group (C = 20) and an experimental group (D = 20). A…
Nonsurgical treatment of skeletal anterior open bite in adult patients: Posterior build-ups.
2016
ABSTRACT Objective: To (1) evaluate the efficacy of build-ups in the correction of anterior open bite in adults, (2) evaluate their efficacy in producing molar intrusion, (3) analyze skeletal and dental changes, and (4) assess the long-term stability. Materials and Methods: The sample consisted of 93 lateral cephalograms from 31 patients with skeletal and dental anterior open bite. The patients had received orthodontic treatment consisting of bonded resin blocks on the maxillary molars combined with Tip-Edge Plus bracket appliances. Cephalometric measurements were performed on radiographs taken before treatment (T1), after treatment (T2), and after a retention period (T3), which were analyz…

2010
WOS: 000298087100003 PubMed: 21196844 Objectives: The purpose of the present study was to retrospectively analyze 170 case series of patients with 200 impacted first and second permanent molars. Study Design: Records of 104.408 patients were retrospectively screened in this multicenter study. The chosen study population consists of 170 patients who presented with impacted or retained first and second permanent molar. All patients with impacted first or second permanent molar had undergone clinical and radiographic examinations. The following factors were analyzed: age and gender, frequency, distribution, location, position, the number of impacted tooth, primary and secondary retention, degr…
Prevalence of impacted premolars in a Turkish population and considerations for surgical treatment
2010
Objective: The aim of this study was to identify the prevalence, associated pathology and symptoms, and treatment of impacted premolars in a Turkish population. Study Design: This retrospective study examined panoramic radiographs and clinical records of 9,000 patients who presented consecutively at our oral and maxillofacial surgery clinics between January 1998 and January 2009. In addition to demographic data (patient sex and age), data was compiled on the number and location of impacted missing maxillary and mandibular premolars, retained deciduous molars, associated pathologies and symptoms, and treatment methods. Results: A total of 105 impacted maxillary or mandibular premolars were o…
The prevalence of root dilacerations in a Turkish population
2009
Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of root dilaceration in a Turkish dental patient population with respect to sexes and dental localization in relation between sex and this anomaly. Study Design: A retrospective study was performed using periapical radiography of 2,124 patients ranging in age from 15 to 65. All data (age, sex and systemic disease or syndrome) was obtained from the files. These patients were analyzed for root dilaceration. Descriptive characteristics of sexes, jaws, and dental localization were recorded. The Pearson chi-squared test was used. Results: Of 2,251 patients, 214 (9.5%) had root dilaceration. Root dilacerations were determined in 27…

Effects of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation on pain after impacted third molar surgery.
2018
Background The aim of this study was to assess the therapeutic effects of Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) on pain after the impacted third molar surgery. Material and Methods The study was carried out on 30 patients attending the outpatient department of the oral and maxillofacial surgery. Both sides’ impacted mandibular third molars were taken into consideration, and a total of 60 impacted third molars were undergone surgical extraction. After the first surgery, patients were given analgesic, antibiotics, and mouthwash as a routine treatment procedure. Following the second surgery, TENS was applied over the painful area of the cheek for patients in addition to routine tr…
