Comparison of postoperative morbidity between piezoelectric surgery and conventional rotary instruments in mandibular third molar surgery: a split-mo…

2020

Background The extraction of impacted third molar teeth is a common procedure in maxillofacial surgery. The aim of this study was to compare of piezoelectric surgical technique with the one with conventional rotary instruments in terms of edema, trismus and pain, in mandibular third molar surgery. Material and Methods 20 individuals with symmetrically impacted lower mandibular third molars and 40 teeth were included in the study. Third molars on the left side of each patient were removed with piezosurgery, while the counterparts on the right side were removed with conventional rotary instruments. Postoperatively, the same antibiotic, analgesic, and mouthwash were recommended to both groups.…

Molecular Association of a Nonionic and an Ionic-Induced Surfactant:  Cryptand (221D) NaCl in Water

2003

The cryptand 5-decyl-4,7,13,16,21-pentaoxa-1,10-diazabicyclo-[8.8.5] tricosane [221D] strongly resembles a surfactant in its characteristics:  it contains a hydrophilic headgroup, the cryptand unit, and a hydrophobic unit, the decyl chain. It is insoluble in water, but in the presence of an appropriate amount of NaCl, as a consequence of the complex formation between 221D and Na+, it becomes soluble and forms aggregates. The aggregates, depending on the NaCl-221D molar ratio, can be considered as mixed ionic nonionic micelles or ionic micelles. The evolution of the aggregate dimensions and their shape has already been studied at two NaCl-221D molar ratios as a function of the 221D concentra…

Oral Health-related quality of life after coronectomy for impacted mandibular third molar in the first postoperative week

2021

Background Coronectomy of a mandibular impacted third molar is a surgical treatment to minimize the risk for inferior alveolar nerve damage. We aimed to determine whether this procedure affected the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) within the first postoperative week. Material and Methods This prospective study included 50 patients that underwent a coronectomy for an impacted mandibular third molar. The patients completed the Oral Health Impact Profile-14 (OHIP-14) questionnaire and questions about pain and analgesic intake on every day during the first postoperative week. Results Mean OHIP-14 scores were highest during the first three postoperative days; the highest mean score …

Apparent Molar Volumes of Calcium Nitrate in 1-Propanol + Water at 298.15 K

1999

The densities of 1-propanol + water + calcium nitrate mixtures have been measured with an oscillating-tube densimeter over a large range of concentrations of the salt and 1-propanol, at 298.15 K. From these densities, apparent molar volumes of calcium nitrate in 1-propanol + water mixtures have been calculated, and partial molar volumes at infinite dilution have been evaluated.

Efficacy of platelet-rich plasma applied to post-extraction retained lower third molar alveoli. A systematic review

2013

Dental retentions have a high prevalence among the general population and their removal can involve multiple complications. The use of platelet rich plasma has been proposed in an attempt to avoid these complications, as it contains high growth factors and stimulates diverse biological functions that facilitate the healing of soft and hard tissues. Objectives: To evaluate the available scientific evidence related to the application of platelet-rich plasma in the post-extraction alveoli of a retained lower third molars. Material and Methods: A systematic review of published literature registered in the Medline, EMBASE, Cochrane and NIH databases. The following categories were included: human…

Coronectomy - An alternative approach to remove impacted teeth in oncological patients.

2018

Background Coronectomy involves the section of the tooth crown leaving the roots in the socket. Possibility of inferior alveolar nerve injury and mandibular fracture are the main indications for this approach. Herein, we describe a case series of coronectomy to highlight its indication in normal and oncological patients. Material and methods A total of 9 patients were submitted to coronectomy, 6 of them were oncological. Three patients were evaluated before head and neck radiotherapy (HNRT), 2 after HNRT and 1 before bone marrow transplantation. Results Mean age of the patients was 49 years, most of them male (n=7). Lower third molars were the main teeth that received this procedure, and al…

Comparative split-mouth study of the anesthetic efficacy of 4% articaine versus 0.5% bupivacaine in impacted mandibular third molar extraction

2013

Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare the clinical efficacy of articaine at 4% (epinephrine 1:100,000) with bupivacaine at 0.5% (epinephrine 1:200,000) for surgical extraction of impacted mandibular third molars. Study Design: This was a randomized, double blind, split-mouth, clinical trial. Thirty-six patients took part and underwent extraction of 72 lower third molars. The variables studied were: anesthetic latency time, intra-operative bleeding, anesthetic quality, hemodynamic changes during the surgical intervention, anesthetic duration in the soft tissues, post-operative analgesia and post-operative pain at 2, 6, 12 and 24 hours using a visual analogue scale, as well as a…

Growth kinetics and characterization of human dental pulp stem cells: Comparison between third molar and first premolar teeth

2015

Background Dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) play an important role in tissue regeneration. This study compares the growth kinetics and characterization of third molar and first premolar human DPSCs. Material and Methods Dental pulp tissues were isolated from human first premolar and third molar teeth and were digested by treating them with collagenase type I. Single-cell suspensions from each dental pulp were seeded in T25 culture flasks and the media were replaced every 3 days until 70% confluence. The cells were enumerated to determine the population doubling time (PDT). Cells were characterized using flow cytometry, RT-PCR and osteogenic medium for differentiation of DPSCs. Karyotyping ass…

Stress distribution of complete-arch implant-supported prostheses reinforced with silica-nylon mesh

2019

Made available in DSpace on 2020-12-12T01:20:51Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2019-01-01 Background: This study evaluated the presence of a silica-nylon mesh and two cantilever lengths on the biomechanical behavior of complete-arch implant-supported prostheses. Material and Methods: Twenty-four (24) complete mandibular arch implant-supported prostheses were divided into 4 groups according to the presence of reinforcing mesh (with or without) and the cantilever length (molar-15 mm or premolar-5 mm). The specimens were submitted to strain gauge analysis (30-kgf, 10 s) at different points (molar and premolar). Three-dimensional models were created based on the in vitro spec…
