Halogen bonding enhances nonlinear optical response in poled supramolecular polymers
2015
We demonstrate that halogen bonding strongly enhances the nonlinear optical response of poled supramolecular polymer systems. We compare three nonlinear optical chromophores with similar electronic structures but different bond-donating units, and show that both the type and the strength of the noncovalent interaction between the chromophores and the polymer matrix play their own distinctive roles in the optical nonlinearity of the systems. acceptedVersion Peer reviewed
Pulling Single Adsorbed Bottle-Brush Polymers off a Flat Surface: A Monte Carlo Simulation
2013
Force versus extension behavior of flexible chains and semiflexible bottle-brush polymers adsorbed from a good solvent on a planar substrate is studied by Monte Carlo simulation of the bond fluctua...
Modification of Polymers in Supercritical Carbon Dioxide
2003
The interaction of scFluids and polymers are governed by the intermolecular forces between solvent-solvent, solvent-polymer segment, and polymer segment-segment pairs. Because of its symmetry, within reasonable pressure values, CO2 does not have a dipole moment, but it does have a quadrupole moment significant over a much shorter distance than dipolar interactions. The quadrupole moment and the Lewis acidity of CO2 imparts to the carbon dioxide the peculiarity to be a solvent for selected classes of polymers like perfluorinated polyacrylates, polysiloxanes and polyether-polycarbonate diblock copolymers [1–3].
1988
The unperturbed dimensions parameter KΘ is one of the most important characteristics of a polymer chain. For binary systems (polymer/solvent) and mostly for ternary systems (polymer/solvent(1)/solvent(2)) the KΘ values show large discrepancies with respect to those under thetaconditions in a single solvent. These discrepancies can be explained by considering that the interaction parameter χ (and consequently the coil dimensions or the number of intramolecular contacts between polymer segments) changes with molecular weight M. Assuming this dependency, a modified Stockmayer-Fixman equation is proposed from which a unique value of KΘ for a given polymer, independent of M, is obtained. The use…
Interactions in water-alcohol mixtures: Conductance of lithium picrate in solutions of water and isomeric pentanols at 25C
1982
Conductance measurements of lithium picrate in solutions of water in n-pentanol, 2-pentanol, 3-pentanol, 2-methyl-1-butanol and 3-methyl-1-butanol have been carried out at 25°C. Ionic association and conductance were found to change with water content and with the molecular structure of the alcohols (i.e. position of the OH group and degree of branching of the alkyl chain). These results indicate that both conductance and ion pair formation are not the consequence of the simple motion of ions in the electrical field as required by the continuum model. A more realistic approach, involving the internal structure of the solvent mixtures, has been considered.
1H,13C and17O NMR spectroscopic study of four bicyclo [3.1.1]heptenes (derivatives of α-pinene) and four bicyclo[3.1.1]heptanes (derivatives of β-pin…
1992
Four derivatives of 2, 6, 6-trimethylbicyclo[3.1.1]hept-2-ene (α-pinene) and four derivatives of 2-methylene-6, 6-dimethylbicyclo[3.1.1]heptane (β-pinene) were synthesized and their 1H, 13C and 17O NMR spectra were measured, analysed and assigned. The 1H NMR spectral parameters were obtained by computer-aided analyses of the very complex multi-spin, second-order spectra. Some of the 13C NMR chemical shift assignments of these compounds reported in the literature should be changed, based on these accurate 1H NMR spectral analyses and carbon-proton chemical shift correlated spectra (COSY). The new assignments are supported by the 1J(C, H) values, which show a strong dependence on the bond ang…
Flexible Synthesis of Planar Chiral Azoninones and Optically Active Indolizidinones
2014
The flexible synthesis of defined substituted optically active indolizidinones starting from chiral pool (S)-proline and trans 4-hydroxy-(S)-proline is described. Several defined 2-vinylpyrrolidines were generated in short sequences. The aza-Claisen rearrangement using chloro and phenylketene equivalents delivered nine-membered-ring lactams with up to three stereogenic centres and pS-arranged E olefins. Depending on the substitution pattern, certain azoninones had a flexible conformation and showed pS/pR double-bond flipping. Treatment of the unsaturated lactams with the soft electrophile iodine induced diastereoselective transannular ring contractions. Here, the planar chiral arrangement o…
Poly(U) RNA-templated synthesis of AppA.
2015
Simple nucleotide templating activities are of interest as potential primordial reactions. Here we describe the acceleration of 5′-5′ AppA synthesis by 3′-5′ poly(U) under normal solution conditions. This reaction is apparently templated via complementary U:A base-pairing, despite the involvement of two different RNA backbones, because poly(U), unlike other polymers, significantly stimulates AppA synthesis. These interactions occur in moderate (K+) and (Mg2+) and are temperature sensitive, being more efficient at 10°C than at 4°C, but absent at 20°C. The reaction is only slightly pH sensitive, despite potentially relevant substrate pKa’s. Kinetic data explicitly support production of AppA b…
Organic/inorganic molecular conductors based upon perylene and Lindquist-type polyoxometalates
2001
The preparation, structures and physical properties of the organic/inorganic radical salts based upon perylene (per) and Lindquist type polyoxometalates (POMs) are reported. Three new hybrid salts have been prepared: (per)5[Mo6O19] (1), (per)5[W6O19] (2), and (per)5[VW5O19] (3). Only structures 1 (P, Z = 2) and 3 (P, Z = 2) were fully determined as compound 2 was found to have unit cell parameters practically identical to 1 and, therefore, is considered isostructural with the latter. The structures consist of interpenetrated organic and mixed organic/inorganic layers in the ac plane alternating along the a direction. The organic layers present a novel packing mode of the perylene molecules …
Patterning of a Surface Immobilized ATRP Initiator with an Inkjet Printer
2010
A new technique for patterning polymer brushes on the micrometer scale has been developed in which an inkjet printer was used to deposit droplets of acid on a surface-immobilized initiator for atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The acid cleaved an ester bond in the ATRP initiator in a saponification reaction. As a result, the ATRP initiator was rendered inactive. To control the degree of defunctionalization, a new initiator containing a weak ester bond was derived from a tertiary alcohol. Comparison to an established ATRP initiator, derived from a primary alcohol, showed that the novel initiator was defunctionalized with a higher efficiency. Control of the reaction time allowed to…
