<p>The La Fossa cone of Vulcano Island (Aeolian Archipelago, Italy) is a closed conduit volcano. Today, Vulcano Island is characterized by sulfataric activity, with a large fumarolic field that is mainly located in the summit area. A scanning differential optical absorption spectroscopy instrument designed by the Optical Sensing Group of Chalmers University of Technology in Göteborg, Sweden, was installed in the framework of the European project "Network for Observation of Volcanic and Atmospheric Change", in March 2008. Abstract A river terrace of the River Gauja (Latvia), built of Weichselian glaciolacustrine deposits, contains a large number of erratic boulders from the Fennoscandian Shield. These erratic boulders include several types of granites and granodiorites. Some of the granodiorites are so strongly weathered that they fall apart into mm-sized grains of individual minerals when it is attempted to take them out of the host sediment. This strongly weathered nature makes them physically comparable to unconsolidated sand. A consequence is that they may be subjected to soft-sediment deformation. Effects of vegetation at different succession stages on soil properties and water flow in sandy soil

The effects of vegetation at different succession stages on soil properties and water flow were assessed in sandy soil at 3 experimental sites near Sekule village (southwest Slovakia). Site S1 was a pioneer site dominated by mosses, site S2 was an early successional stage with a thin stand of grasses, and site S3 was an early successional stage (more advanced compared to the previous), richer in species, with a denser stand of grasses. It was found that vegetation at different succession stages affected soil properties and water flow in sandy soil, but the order of changes in some soil properties and water penetration depths were different from the order of succession stages.
Effect of different dispersing additives on the morphology and the properties of polyethylene-based nanocomposite films

In this work, the use of a polar wax, e.g. amphiphilic Tegomer ® E 525 (TEG) is investigated with the aim of mod- ifying, and possibly improving, the dispersion of an organically modified nanoclay (OMMT), loaded at 5 wt%, in a poly- ethylene matrix (PE) at relatively low loading levels. We have indeed found that the incorporation of low loadings, e.g. 0.5 wt%, of TEG, an amphiphilic block co-polymer, into a PE/OMMT sample results in a substantial improvement of the clay dispersion in the nanocomposite and, consequently, of the mechanical and thermomechanical properties of the films. Controlled production of patchy particles from the combined effects of nanoprecipitation and vitrification

Using molecular dynamics simulations, we study a simple and scalable method for fabricating patchy nanoparticles via the assembly of binary polymer blends under a rapid solvent exchange. Patchiness can be achieved by incorporating a glassy component, which kinetically traps the particle morphology along the path to the equilibrium configuration. Our simulations reveal that the number of surface patches increases for larger nanoparticles and for more asymmetric blend ratios, while the size distribution of the patches remains rather uniform.
