Areal extent and first U-Pb age of the Pre-Damaran Abbabis complex in the central Damara belt of South West Africa (Namibia)
1978
The Proterozoic Abbabis Complex emerges from beneath the metasediments of the Late Precambrian Damara Supergroup within mantled gneiss domes and anticlinoria over a wide area in the central granite zone of the Pan African Damara belt. U-Pb dating of composite-, size-, and non-magnetic fractions of metamict zircons from two samples of Abbabis granite-gneiss from the farm Abbabis yielded a concordia intercept age of 1925 −280 +330 Ma. It is speculated that the Abbabis basement rocks are continuous under the Damaran metasedimentary cover and may link up with the Franzfontein basement inlier of similar age. This conclusion supports the ensialic character of the northeastern branch of the Damara…
Classification of prefix aiz- ‘away’ meanings: from Jānis Endzelīns approach to nowadays
2019
The polysemic nature of prefixes in Latvian causes problems in prefix classification. Several authors in different time periods have proposed diverse prefix classification systems. In this research, three different classification systems of prefix aiz- ‘away’ are compared – the classification system created by Endzelīns (1971) in 1907, the classification system created by Soida in 1970 (printed in 2009), and the classification system proposed by Vulāne (2015). To ascertain which meanings are used nowadays the examples are drawn from the corpus. There are 11 prefixes in the Latvian language used in word-formation. In this research, prefix aiz- is chosen as it has a rich meaning system althou…
Embryo classification method based in time-lapse analysis is associated with blastocyst quality

groups: 87.7%(10434/11893), 87.4%(2674/3060), 80.2%(1350/1683) and 81.0%(634/783). Abnormal fertilization rate was significantly lower in 9598% group(6.9%,54/783) than other groups(16.1%,1918/11893; 13.8%,421/ 3060; 11.4%,192/1683). Good embryo, pregnancy and implantation rates were no significant differences among four groups(48.9%,61.6%,43.5%; 48.9%,62.1%,43.5%; 50.0%,57.6%,42.3%; 53.1%,62.5%,45.7%). CONCLUSION: Sperm morphology does not affect normal fertilization, embryonic development and clinical outcome.
Molecular mechanisms of rosmarinic acid from Salvia miltiorrhiza in acute lymphoblastic leukemia cells
2015
Abstract Ethnopharmacological relevance Rosmarinic acid (RA), a major hydrosoluble bioactive compound found in the Chinese medicinal herb, Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge, which has been used in traditional Chinese medicine to treat various diseases, including cancer. However, the mechanisms have not been fully elucidated. Aim of the study Guided by microarray hybridization and Ingenuity Pathway Analysis, we identified modes of action of rosmarinic acid (RA) isolated from S. miltiorrhiza on acute lymphoblastic leukemia cells. Materials and methods Microarray data were verified by independent methods: Real-time RT-PCR (mRNA expression), resazurin assay (cytotoxicity of RA towards parental CCRF-CEM…
Prefazione a La fiaba russa

Vladimir Jakovlevič Propp was born in St Petersburg on 17 April 1895 and died in Leningrad on 22 August 1970. As if to say that, although he always stayed in the same city, history passed him passed in front of him, and those places took on a different meaning in the course of (his) time an entirely different sense and flavour. Of course, for a folklorist like him, used to reflecting on the distance of centuries, if not not millennia, those seventy-five years of the 20th century must have been trifles. The fact remains, however, that the heavy epochal changes he witnessed - the Russian revolution and the long Soviet political and cultural regime that followed - have weighed heavily on his w…
The Tense-Aspect system between ontogeny and phylogeny: Evidence from the Proto-Indo-European “Injunctive”
2006
This paper examines early inflectional morphology related to the tense-aspect system of Pre-Indo-European by establishing a correlation between ontogeny and phylogeny in language acquisition and development. It will be argued that historical linguistics can shed light on the long-standing debate over the emergence of tense-aspect morphology. More specifically, the so-called Injunctive forms, which are assumed to be the most ancient verbal inflected items tracing back to the Pre-Indo-European language (see, among others, Lehmann 2002), permit us to infer that the initial grammar of the Proto-language was lacking tense morphology. In other words, the residual category of the Injunctive, which…
Effects of bacterial lipopolysaccharides (LPS) and tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF alpha) on rat tracheal epithelial cells in culture: morphology, …
1996
Rat tracheal epithelial cells were cultured and the effects of LPS and TNF alpha on cell morphology, rate of proliferation and NO synthase activity were studied. NO synthase activity was determined by measuring the accumulation of 3H-L-citrulline during incubation of confluent monolayer with 3H-L-arginine. In untreated cells no significant 3H-L-citrulline formation was detected, and bradykinin and the calcium ionophore A 23187 failed to stimulate 3H-L-citrulline formation excluding a constitutively expressed, calcium-dependent NO synthase activity. After culturing the cells for 18 h in the presence of LPS (10 micrograms/ml) and TNF alpha (500 U/ml) a marked formation of 3H-L-citrulline coul…

Fire frequency during the Holocene in central Latvia, northeastern Europe
2021
Fire is today a pan-European issue and is expected to be more salient because of climate and land use changes. Even though natural and anthropogenic fires have shaped forest composition and landscape characteristics since the last glacial retreat from northeastern Europe, fire frequency is an understudied topic. To address this issue, we analysed macroscopic charcoal (>160 μm) from two sediment sequences located in the central and littoral parts of Lake Bricu (central Latvia) revealing the fire frequency during the Holocene. The chronology of the analysed sediment sequences is based on spheroidal fly-ash carbonaceous particles and accelerator mass spectrometry radiocarbon dating. Macroscop…
