Processing and characterization of blends of fluoroelastomers with semirigid liquid crystal polymers

1996

Fluoroelastomers (FEs) usually have working temperatures above 150 degrees C and a great resistance to aggressive agents such as oils, fuels, aliphatic and aromatic solvents, steam, moderate acid, and basic environments. Liquid crystal polymers (LCPs) can be effective processing aids and reinforcing agents for elastomers. These characteristics are very attractive to lower melt viscosity and to stiffen and strengthen the final product through a simple blending. Among the LCPs, the semirigid LCPs seem the most appealing for blending with flexible thermoplastics (FTs) because their processing temperatures can be arranged to be in the same processing temperature range of FTs and because the pre…

Poly lactic acid based foams prepared via thermally induced phase separation (TIPS): A method to tune the crystallinity

2012

Blends of Poly-L-Lactic Acid (PLLA) with two Poly-Lactic Acid (PLA) in different proportions (90/10 and 70/30) were utilized in order to produce biodegradable and biocompatible scaffolds for soft tissue engineering applications. The scaffolds were produced via thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) starting from ternary systems where dioxane was the solvent and water the non-solvent. Morphology was evaluated by Scanning Electron Microscopy (average pore size and interconnection). Moreover a DSC analysis was carried out on the as-obtained scaffold in order to obtain information about theirs thermal properties (enthalpy of melt and crystallization). The results showed that is possible to p…

Continuous hand openness detection using a Kinect-like device

2014

This paper presents a novel method to reproduce in real time the opening and closing gestures of a human hand, animating a three-dimensional model of it. In other works, this result can be achieved by mapping a set of significant points of a real hand on the corresponding points of the model to animate. We propose an alternative way to produce the same effect without mapping points, but using a level-based estimation of the degree of opening of the hand. The experiments have been executed using Microsoft KinectTM, but the method would work on any other Kinect-like devices (as defined herein). The results obtained are particularly encouraging and demonstrate real-time performance of the syst…

Blood Vessel Detection Algorithm for Tissue Engineering and Quantitative Histology.

2021

AbstractImmunohistochemistry for vascular network analysis plays a fundamental role in basic science, translational research and clinical practice. However, identifying vascularization in histological tissue images is time consuming and markedly depends on the operator’s experience. In this study, we present “blood vessel detection—BVD”, an automatic algorithm for quantitative analysis of blood vessels in immunohistochemical images. BVD is based on extraction and analysis of low-level image features and spatial filtering techniques, which do not require a training phase. BVD algorithm performance was comparatively evaluated on histological sections from three different in vivo experiments. …

Mountain Environment and Landscape in prehistoric Sicily: The Madonie region (Palermo, Italy)

2008

The present paper would like to show a research project still in progress, presenting the first preliminary archaeological data. The aim of the Madonie project is to analyse mobility strategies and the use of a mountain territory by prehistoric and historic age population, relating geomorphological features, raw material sources and landscape to settlements. In this occurence we are going to discuss about the prehistoric periods.

I tamburi a cornice in Sicilia

2015

Queste, sebbene affini a quelle impiegate in altre regioni italian…

Settore L-ART/08 - EtnomusicologiaFirst evidences of frame drums in Sicily trace back to the V century b.C. Tambourines have been recorded until today by paintings archive documentation observations provided by foreign travellers folkloric literature and quite widely by modern ethnomusicology through audio and video recordings collected on the field. Morphology performance techniques repertoires decorations and social use of tambourines in Sicily refer to the wider context of Italian (central-southern part) and Mediteranean area but with some peculiarities chiefly referring to performance skills. Though similar to the techniques practised in other Italian regions in Sicily we can observe a typical style that can be connected with a common historical background with the Arabic-Islamic world.

Suffissi valutativi in Plauto: una proposta cognitivista e morfo-pragmatica

2020

Latin evaluative suffixes, especially diminutives, have received considerable attention in the relevant literature, but a morphologicalpragmatic analysis of their uses is still lacking. This work aims at analysing the behavior of the archaic Latin suffix -llus within a theoretical framework combining ressler – Merlini Barbaresi’s (1994) morpho-pragmatic model and the cognitive perspective on polysemy and the pragmatic polyfunctionality of evaluative suffixes. As an evaluative suffix,, -llus is used with a proper diminutive function that adds to the base the semantic component 'small'. In many cases, however, -llus plays a function related to the complex system of relations between the speak…
