Late Activation of Stress-activated Protein Kinases/c-Jun N-terminal Kinases Triggered by Cisplatin-induced DNA Damage in Repair-defective Cells
2011
Although stress-activated protein kinases/c-Jun N-terminal kinases (SAPK/JNK) are rapidly activated by genotoxins, the role of DNA damage in this response is not well defined. Here we show that the SEK1/MKK4-mediated dual phosphorylation of SAPK/JNK (Thr-183/Tyr-185) correlates with the level of cisplatin-DNA adducts at late times (16–24 h) after drug treatment in both human and mouse cells. Transfection of platinated plasmid DNA also caused SAPK/JNK activation. A defect in transcription-coupled nucleotide excision repair resting on a mutation in Cockayne syndrome group B protein promoted the late SAPK/JNK activation following cisplatin exposure. Signaling to SAPK/JNK was accompanied by act…

2016
Pro gradu -tutkielma tarkastelee seksuaalivähemmistöistä käytyä lehtikeskustelua homoseksuaalisuuden dekriminalisoinnin aikaan vuosina 1970–1971 sekä homoseksuaalisuuden sairausluokituksen poistamisen aikaan vuosina 1979–1981. Olen sijoittanut tutkimukseni seksuaalivähemmistöjen historian kannalta keskeisiin ajanjaksoihin. Homoseksuaalisuus dekriminalisoitiin Suomessa vuonna 1971 ja homoseksuaalisuuden sairausluokitus poistettiin Suomessa vuonna 1981. Alkuperäislähteinä käytin kahdeksaa suomalaista keskeistä erilaista poliittista ja uskonnollista näkökulmaa edustavaa sanoma- ja aikakauslehteä. Työssäni tutkin sanoma- ja aikakauslehtiä kvalitatiivisella tutkimusmenetelmällä eli teen laadulli…
Investigation of a Gravel-Bed River’s Pattern Changes: Insights from Satellite Images
2021
Changes in river pattern have been documented in the literature. The recognition of islands and vegetated patches, which is indicative of the evolution processes, requires simultaneous information at different points and at different times and field studies are still difficult and scarce. The present work, focusing the attention on a gravel-bed river, explores the possibility to conduct a first-step pattern changes analysis by identifying the evolution of the morphological features and taking information of islands and vegetated patches from satellite images easily available from Google Earth. The study is conducted by combining the information taken from both the satellite images and the f…
Setaria tundra, what do we know, what is still to be discovered?
2021
Over the past years, the nematode species from the Onchocercidae family, Setaria tundra, has expanded its range by thousands of kilometres from subpolar to subtropical climate zone. Its presence has been confirmed in seven new countries. The appearance of this parasite in many other European countries, especially central and southern ones, is highly probable. In recent years, its mass appearance has led to the numerous fall of reindeer in Fennoscandia, thus causing significant economic damage. There is also a growing risk of its gradation in Central Europe, which threatens overpopulated wild deer species and possibly farm animals, however there is no information if other than mosquitoes blo…
Genome Characterization of natural Saccharomyces hybrids of biotechnological interest
2012
At present, the genus Saccharomyces comprises seven species according to their patterns of breeding. The species boundaries are not clear due to the description of several reticulate events due to introgression and hybridization. In the last decade, new natural hybrids have been described in wine and brewing, such as S. cerevisiae x S. kudriavzevii. Due to new practices in wine and beer production, together with consequences in grape properties due to climatic change, led biotechnological companies to search for new yeast strains. In this context, hybrids have become of importance to biotechnological industries because they show good fermentative performance at low temperatures and produce …

The effectiveness of personalized design to feed elderly people
2015
Beyond the physiological age, the elderly population is characterized by a high heterogeneity in terms of physical, psychological and sociological status (Maître et al, 2015). Regarding eating behavior, several studies have highlighted a large inter-individual variability in chemosensory abilities (i.e. the ability to perceive an odor or a taste; Sulmont-Rossé et al, 2015) and oral-heath status (i.e. dental status, salivary flow; ALIMASSENS project), as well as inter-individual variability in food preference and food intake (AUPALESENS project). However, the food offer dedicated to the elderly population, and in particular to elderly people who needs help to obtain and/or prepare food for t…
