On Happy Dance : Emotion Recognition in Dance Movements
2013
Movements are capable of conveying emotions, as shown for instance in studies on both non-verbal gestures and music-specific movements performed by instrumentalists or professional dancers. Since dancing/moving to music is a common human activity, this study aims at investigating whether quasi-spontaneous music-induced movements of non-professional dancers can convey emotional qualities as well. From a movement data pool of 60 individuals dancing to 30 musical stimuli, the performances of four dancers that moved most notably, and four stimuli representing happiness, anger, sadness, and tenderness were chosen to create a set of stimuli containing the four audio excerpts, 16 video excerpts (w…
Emotions in Concert : Performers' Experienced Emotions on Stage
2013
Music is often said to be expressive of emotions. Surprisingly, not much is known about the role of performers’ emotions while performing. Do musicians feel the musical emotions when expressing them? Or has expressive playing nothing to do with the emotional experiences of the performer? To investigate performers’ perspectives on the role of emotions in performance, we conducted qualitative in-depth interviews with nineteen musicians teaching or studying at a European conservatoire. In the interviews, musicians were first asked to de-scribe a recent performance experience in as much detail as possible, then to make a visual representation of their experiences on stage, and finally, to answe…
What Emotions and Free Associations Characterize Different Musical Styles?
2013
Bisesi, Parncutt, & Friberg (2011) extended Director Musices (DM) - a software package for automatic rendering of expressive performance (Friberg et al., 2006) that relates the expressive features of a performance not only to global or intermediate structural properties, but also to local events (grouping, metrical, melodic and harmonic accents). Friberg & Bisesi (2013) applied the new rule system to model stylistic variations corresponding to different historical periods and styles in piano music. In this project, we extend pDM - a pure data system for real-time expressive control of music performance (Friberg, 2006) - by adjusting algorithmic formulations inspired by a theory of musical a…
Paths from socioemotional behavior in middle childhood to personality in middle adulthood.
2012
Continuity in individual differences from socioemotional behavior in middle childhood to personality characteristics in middle adulthood was examined on the assumption that they share certain temperament-related elements. Socioemotional characteristics were measured using teacher ratings at ages 8 (N = 369; 53% males) and 14 (95% of the initial sample). Personality was assessed at age 42 (63% of the initial sample; 50% males) using a shortened version of the NEO Personality Inventory (NEO-PI); the Karolinska Scales of Personality (KSP); and the Adult Temperament Questionnaire (ATQ). Three models were tested using structural equation modeling. The results confirmed paths (a) from behavioral …
Il corpo, le emozioni e il riconoscimento reciproco
2019
This essay describes a phenomenology of the body and his language, the emotions. The main purpose is to highlight their referential scope. Emotions enable us to comprehend individual aspects partecipating in our lifeworlds. This perspective challanges today's dominant culture, where emotions are understood as mere self-expressions. Seen as favourable reactions to meeting the other, emotions appaear to us as forms of love and produce knowledge by dilection for the other's inner world. A reflection on the emotions, particulary empathy, highlights their impotance for the moral education to a correct sensibility.
Initial validation of the Psychobiosocial States in Physical Education (PBS-SPE) scale
2018
The purpose of this cross-sectional investigation was to examine the item characteristics, factor structure, reliability, convergent validity, and nomological validity of the Psychobiosocial States in Physical Education (PBS-SPE) scale. In Study 1, a sample of 1,030 students (582 girls and 448 boys, 10 to 19-year-olds), drawn from middle or high schools, rated the intensity of the 20 items version of the PBS-SPE scale thinking about the feelings they had usually experienced in physical education classes. In Study 2, an additional sample of 1,025 students (578 girls, 447 boys, 10 to 19-year-olds), rated the 16 items of the final version of the scale. Two subsamples also completed an affectiv…

Teaching Matters : Enjoyment and Job Satisfaction
2016
Teaching occurs in a complex and dynamic environment that involves other people—learners, their families and school authorities as well as the subject matter to be taught. Expectations towards the effects of teaching are high, though opinions about teachers may be harmful. What is a contemporary teacher like, then? The aim of this article is to present a portrait of an average teacher on the basis of selected empirical evidence from TALIS 2013 survey (OECD, 2014). Also teachers’ emotions and their relations with job satisfaction and overall success are discussed. Finally, empirical evidence from a case study on job satisfaction, enjoyment and success of Polish teachers of English is discuss…
Związek indukowanych emocji z ruminacjami i orientacją pozytywną
2018
The article, based on the theory of Barbara Fredrickson (1998), shows the connection of positive emotions (satisfaction, joy) and negative emotions (sadness, disgust) with positive orientation, the belief that life is a zero-sum game and emerging ruminations. Emotions were induced by means of multimedia induction, one for each of the emotions. Dependent variables were measured using the “Positive Orientation” questionnaires by Łaguna, Oleś i Filipiuk (2011), “Scale of Belief in a Zero-sum Game” by Różycka and Wojciszke (2010) and “Ruminations Questionnaire” Baryły and Wojciszke (2005). 120 students took part in the study (59 men and 61 women at the age of M=22.4). The results show that the s…
Editorial: Positive Technology: Designing E-experiences for Positive Change
2019
While there is little doubt that our lives are becoming increasingly digital, whether this change is for the better or for the worse is far from being settled. Rather, over the past years concerns about the personal and social impacts of technologies have been growing, fueled by dystopian Orwellian scenarios that almost on daily basis are generously dispensed by major Western media outlets. According to a recent poll involving some 1,150 experts, 47% of respondents predict that individuals’ well-being will bemore helped than harmed by digital life in the next decade, while 32% say people’s well-being will bemore harmed than helped. Only 21% of those surveyed indicated that the impact of tec…
