Coach-athlete perceived congruence between actual and desired emotions in karate competition and training
2017
Coaches can help athletes regulate emotions but would benefit from tools that help them accurately perceive athletes' emotions. In the present study, we investigated the use of video-recorded performances to compare 3 martial artists' ratings of desired and actual emotions with their coach's ratings. Results show how desired emotions progressively fluctuated throughout competition. Furthermore, desired and actual emotions differed between training and performance contexts. Finally, we report correlations between performance and perceived congruence in desired and actual emotions. Cumulatively, results offer support for the video-assisted recall of emotions as an intervention tool in develop…
Language teacher identities as socio-politically situated construction : Finnish and Brazilian student teachers’ visualisations of their professional…
2021
The process of envisioning the future is central to teachers’ identity construction, but different environments create distinct sociocultural conditions for the process. This qualitative study drawing on visual-textual methods compares Finnish and Brazilian student teachers’ desired and feared professional futures. Two different perspectives on future identities were detected: a desire for status and a desire for meaningfulness. The results revealed the radically different social status of teaching in the two countries and the role this played in the envisioned identities. The study highlights the importance of awareness of the socio-political nature of identity construction in developing t…
The role of tennis coaches in regulating their players' emotional states : an exploratory study
2014
During the past few decades, the ability to perceive, understand, and regulate emotions efficiently has received widespread attention in sport settings (Hanin, 2000; 2004; Robazza, Pellizzari, & Hanin, 2004). Moreover, this line of research has mainly focused on the intrapersonal aspect of emotions. The aim of the present study was to examine the role of tennis coaches in regulating their players’ emotional states. The present study explored (a) tennis players’ emotional states related to their best and worst performances, (b) coaches’ accuracy in assessing players’ emotional experiences within these performances, and (c) self- and interpersonal emotional regulation strategies of tennis coa…
The social side of music listening : Empathy and contagion in music-induced emotions
2017
Process theories have identified empathy and contagion as mechanisms by which music may induce emotions and recent studies in psychology and cognitive neuroscience have started to examine these hypotheses. After showing how music listening may tap into social cognition, and distinguishing between empathy and emotional contagion at the psychological and neural levels, this chapter reviews the theoretical and empirical support for the involvement of these two processes in music-induced emotions. Several implications for future research on musicinduced emotions are discussed: (1) drawing from current efforts to reduce conceptual confusion in mainstream research on empathy and contagion, these…
Negative emotional consequences of labour market activation policies for long-term unemployed young adults in Finland
2021
PurposeThis article deals with the negative emotional consequences of active labour market policies (ALMPs) for long-term unemployed young adults in Finland. Although such policies may have positive effects, an exploration of their negative impacts reveals their problematic side effects. We explore various aspects of ALMP interventions that prevent individuals from gaining such positive outcomes and thus reduce their motivation to invest in the policies.Design/methodology/approachDrawing on the affect theory of social exchange, we understand that individuals seek positive rewards from social interactions. Our data is taken from life course interviews with unemployed people aged 20–31 in cen…

Children’s negative emotions are also measured by diary-formed questionnaires which are filled in by their parents. The results showed that parental affection was negatively related to children’s negative emotions while parental psychological control was positively related to children’s negative emotions. The study did not find relation between parental behavioral control and children’s negative em…
Study of vocalists' use of emotions in performance preparation
2015
Musicians and educators understand the importance of expressivity in vocal performance. Despite the acceptance of expressivity as a crucial element in musical performance, educators have reported addressing it only cursorily or not addressing it at all when preparing for a performance. For these reasons, this research has focused on techniques used by trained musicians when preparing a performance, to be adapted and applied for use by teachers with their large vocal ensembles. Participants in this study were enrolled in vocal / operatic performance programs at universities in the United States, Ireland, Finland, and Hong Kong. Their progress was tracked throughout the semester by three ques…
Teachers' emotions related to students : a critical review
2014
Opettajien tunteita on tutkittu yhä enemmän muutaman kuluneen vuosikymmenen aikana.
Essays on wages, promotions and performance evaluations
2017
This dissertation comprises four empirical research articles that use personnel data from a large university and worker-level panel data from Finland to examine the determinants of wages, promotions and employee performance evaluations. The first article employs personnel data to examine the importance of worker output and job seniority as predictors of employee performance evaluations and promotions. The results suggest that better-performing employees – with output measured both in absolute terms and relative to peers – were more likely to be assigned higher performance grades and had a higher probability of being promoted to more complex jobs than their peers with similar characteristics…
