On the motivations to enroll in doctoral studies in Computer Science — A comparison of PhD program models
2013
While student motivation has been intensively researched, only a few studies cover motivation at doctoral level and even less focus on doctoral education in Computer Science. In this paper we investigate the motivation of graduate students to pursue doctoral studies specifically in Computer Science. We interviewed 63 doctoral students, from two different doctoral models (traditional and structured) in Finland and Austria, on their initial reasons and experiences that led them to enroll in doctoral studies. We identified five disjoint main motivational drivers that relate with different aspects of extrinsic and intrinsic motivation. Together with a measure of the strength of their initial mo…
Consumer Acceptance and Use of Instagram
2016
This study extends the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology 2 (UTAUT2) model to investigate factors affecting the acceptance and use of a social networking service (SNS) called Instagram. The UTAUT2 model is modified to better suit the context of SNSs by replacing the price value construct with self-congruence. Furthermore, we explore the effects of behavioral intention and use behavior on "user indegree" defined as the number of people who follow an SNS user. The results of the survey study largely support the hypothesized model in the context of Instagram. The findings contribute to previous knowledge by demonstrating the important roles of hedonic motivation and habit in co…
MOCSE Centered on Students: Validation of Learning Demands and Teacher Support Scales
2020
Based on The Educational Situation Quality Model (MOCSE, acronym in Spanish) framework, the primary objective of this study is to test the factorial validity and reliability of two MOCSE measure instruments referred to the preactional-decisional phase, specifically to learning demands and teacher supports perceived by students to overcome such demands in the classroom context. The participants were 357 Spanish undergraduate students. The data obtained by exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses revealed that the “Learning Demands Scale” (MOCSE-LDS) has a two-factor structure: perceived desirability and feasibility of demands. The data also revealed that the “Teacher Support Questionnair…
In Search of Lost Language: A longitudinal study into trainee teacher motivation and the reactivation of lapsed language skills
2012
Trainee language teachers require a high standard of subject knowledge for their intense training programme and frequently find it difficult to balance the need to maintain their language proficiency with the more urgent necessity of learning new professional skills. This longitudinal study explored language attrition and strategies that could be employed to reactivate lapsed language skills. An initial three year study was undertaken in the context of a Postgraduate Certificate in Education Modern Foreign Languages programme at a Welsh university with the aim of supporting subject knowledge, but the findings are relevant to the wider professional knowledge of new teachers. The initial case…
Motivational strategies used by English teachers : students’ opinions
2017

Teaching and learning to read in Afrikaans : teacher competence and computer-assisted support
2018
This thesis is in the form of a monograph consisting of three distinct, but related studies. The three studies examined Grade 1 teachers’ knowledge and perceptions of reading instruction in classrooms in Namibia; and the use of GraphoGame in Afrikaans as a digital learning tool and as an intervention tool for struggling readers. Three data sets were collected: teachers (N = 132), children (N = 202) and struggling readers (N = 19). The results offered three main findings. First, the results revealed that teachers lacked basic knowledge regarding language and reading instruction. Second, the effect of using the GraphoGame Afrikaans digital reading tool in the classroom showed that the gain sc…
The roles of linguistic confidence and integrative motivation on cross-cultural adaptation of Asian degree students Finland
2015
While cross-cultural adaptation of international students has become more and more popular topics in the field of intercultural communication, there are few studies related to students who come to non-native-English-speaking countries to study international programs. Specifically, the number of Asian students enrolling in international degree programs in Finland has been increasing recently. Besides other difficulties, language has become one of the most baffling issues in the process of both sociocultural adaptation and psychological adaptation of strangers in the host country (Maza, 1963). By narrowing the impacts of integrative motivation and linguistic confidence, they have drawn some r…
