Sixth graders’ evaluation strategies when reading Internet search results : an eye-tracking study
2018
Eye-tracking technology was used to examine Internet search result evaluation strategies adopted by sixth-grade students (N = 36) during ten experimental information search tasks. The relevancy of the search result’s title, URL, and snippet components was manipulated and selection of search results as well as looking into probabilities on the search result components was analysed. The results revealed that during first-pass inspection, students read the search engine page by first looking at the title of a search result. If the title was relevant, the probability of looking at the snippet of the search result increased. During second-pass inspection, there was a high probability of students…
Transition from self tilt to object tilt during maintained lateral tilt in parabolic flight.
1991
Abstract 19 young healthy subjects were subjected to parabolic rollercoaster flight. A horizontal luminous line was seen by the subjects in a headfixed goggle device. During the hypergravic phases of parabolic flight the luminous line seemed to rotate into and during the hypogravic phase against the direction of static head tilt. Ocular counter rotation and activity of the neck position receptors cannot explain these subjective rotations. We conclude that information from the otolith system, converging with visual information within the brain, dislocated the headfixed visual target line. While the retinal image of the luminous line remains unchanged, loading and unloading the otoliths in pa…
Bourdieu and Social Movements: Considering Identity Movements in terms of Field, Capital and Habitus
2013
This article examines the explanatory capacity of Pierre Bourdieu's work in relation to social movements and, in particular, identity movements. It aims to provide a theoretical framework drawing on Bourdieu's central concepts of field, capital and habitus. These concepts are viewed as providing a theoretical toolkit that can be applied to convincingly explain aspects of social movements that social movement theories, such as political process theory, resource mobilization theory and framing, acknowledge, but are not able to explain within a single theoretical framework. Identity movements are approached here in a way that relates them to the position agents/movements occupy in social space…
Evidence of the origin of specific spontaneous head turns during intertrial intervals.
1997
Direction and the frequency of spontaneous head movements during the ITIs following forward and backward paired trials were compared to an acquisition of a conditioned orienting (alpha) response directed to the side of the tone source. The head movements were analyzed from video recordings using classification of head turns to preferred and to nonpreferred directions. The results showed a significant increase in the alpha responses during the forward paired conditioning to the preferred direction and rapid extinction during the subsequent backward conditioning sessions. Spontaneous head movements during the ITIs increased to the same preferred direction as the conditioned alpha responses. T…
Energy-related optimal control accounts for gravitational load: comparing shoulder, elbow, and wrist rotations.
2013
International audience; Gaveau J, Berret B, Demougeot L, Fadiga L, Pozzo T, Papaxanthis C. Energy-related optimal control accounts for gravitational load: comparing shoulder, elbow, and wrist rotations. J Neurophysiol 111: 4-16, 2014. First published October 16, 2013; doi: 10.1152/jn.01029.2012.-We permanently deal with gravity force. Experimental evidences revealed that moving against gravity strongly differs from moving along the gravity vector. This directional asymmetry has been attributed to an optimal planning process that optimizes gravity force effects to minimize energy. Yet, only few studies have considered the case of vertical movements in the context of optimal control. What kin…
On the 1-handles of the product V3XBn for a simply connected open 3-manifold V3
2013
Although \pi_1^\inftyV^3 is an obstruction for killing stably the 1-handles of an open simply connected 3-manifold V^3, one can always get rid of the 1-handles of V^3\times B^n, for high enough n, at price of a certain nonmetrizable slackening of the topology.
Drumming signals within the family Taeniopterygidae (Plecoptera)
2014
Drumming signals of the 11 species of Palaearctic Taeniopterygidae are described for the first time based on the study of populations from nine different European countries from Spain to Russia. In this way, a contribution is made to our knowledge of the constancy respectively the divergence of signals typical for the species distributed over a very wide area. Communication patterns of the family under varying temperatures were analysed. The dependence on temperature indicates that the adults of this family are cold stenothermic insects. Within the genus Brachyptera (Newport, 1851), the call signal of males is significantly different from their response signal (duration and drumming frequen…
ECONOMIC COMOVEMENTS IN EUROPEAN COUNTRIES
2005
This paper examines the existence of common movements in production, prices and interest rates in three countries: France, Germany and the United Kingdom. To analyse this issue, the usual approach of studying cross-correlations is extended. Though these European countries are closely linked to each other, the results obtained vary substantially over time, with the economic variables and in the countries under consideration. Este trabajo examina la existencia de movimientos comunes en la producción, en los precios y en los tipos de interés en tres países: Francia, Alemania y el Reino Unido. Para analizar este tema, se extiende el enfoque habitual del estudio de las correlaciones cruzadas. A …
The Prospects for the Social Economy in a Changing World
1997
Even if the ‘social economy’ has traditionally been marginalized and a subordinated form of production within capitalist societies, the economic, social, territorial and environmental problems of the present times have tended to make it a strategic instrument. This is not only because of its qualities as an economic and management instrument, but also because it is an expression of a dynamic and creative civil society. The aim of this paper is to show the potential of the social economy, the way it has been encapsulated during the postwar period and the conditions that now favour its full development. In the face of new challenges, the efficiency criterion, hitherto used to assess alternati…
