NMR T1-Relaxation Measurements on Paramagnetic Organolanthanides: An Alternative Tool for Structure Determination in Solution

1H NMR investigations were conducted on four paramagnetic organolanthanides, all bearing the tetraisopropylcyclopentadienyl ligand Cp4i (HC5iPr4) in order to verify whether or not interactions observed in the solid state are maintained in solution. In some cases variable-temperature experiments were necessary to enhance the resolution and determine the best conditions for the study. The 1D NMR spectrum could be interpreted in every case. Complementary 2D COSY experiments allowed the full attribution of the signals. Switching of Slow Magnetic Relaxation Dynamics in Mononuclear Dysprosium(III) Compounds with Charge Density

The symmetry around a Dy ion is recognized to be a crucial parameter dictating magnetization relaxation dynamics. We prepared two similar square-antiprismatic complexes, [Dy(LOMe)2(H2O)2](PF6) (1) and Dy(LOMe)2(NO3) (2), where LOMe = [CpCo{P(O)(O(CH3))2}3], including either two neutral water molecules (1) or an anionic nitrate ligand (2). We demonstrated that in this case relaxation dynamics is dramatically affected by the introduction of a charged ligand, stabilizing the easy axis of magnetization along the nitrate direction. Structure proof of (—)-myrtenol, 3-cyclopentenyl-1-methanol and 5-norbornene-2-endo-methanol has been obtained from their proton magnetic resonance spectra in carbon tetrachloride containing different added amounts of tris(dipivaloylmethanato)europium. For each alcohol, a 1:1 complex structure with Eu(dpm)3 could be computed, in which the calculated pseudocontact shift effects on all skeleton protons of the ring system were consistent with the observed shift effect values. A considerable contact contribution of opposite sign to that of the pseudocontact part of the effect could be estimated for the methylene protons of the CH2OH group.
Cis- and trans molybdenum oxo complexes of a prochiral tetradentate aminophenolate ligand : Synthesis, characterization and oxotransfer activity

Abstract Reaction of [MoO2Cl2(dmso)2] with the tetradentate O2N2 donor ligand papy [H2papy = N-(2-hydroxybenzyl)-N-(2-picolyl)glycine] leads to formation of the dioxomolybdenum(VI) complex [MoO2(papy)] (1) as a mixture of cis and trans isomers. Recrystallization from methanol furnishes solid cis-1, whereas the use of a dichloromethane-hexane mixture allows for the isolation of the trans-1 isomer. Both isomers have been structurally characterized by X-ray crystallography and the energy difference between the isomeric pair has been investigated by electronic structure calculations. The four novel phosphonic acid analogues of phenylglycine with various substituents in phenyl ring (mostly fluorine atoms) have been synthesized by using procedure of amidoalkylation of phosphorus trichloride with aromatic aldehydes and acetamide. The NMR, ESI-MS spectroscopy, and single-crystal X-Ray diffraction methods were used to characterize unusual structures: the amino-(4-trifluoromethylbenzyl)-(1), amino-(3,4-difluorobenzyl)-(2), amino-(2,4,6-trifluorobenzyl)-(3), and amino-(2-fluoro-4-hydroxybenzyl)-(4) phosphonic acids. Protonation of a Spherical Macrotricyclic Tetramine: Water Inclusion, Allosteric Effect, and Cooperativity

The spherical macrotricyclic cryptand tetramine "C24" (1) displays remarkable protonation behaviour. It undergoes protonation in four successive steps for which pKa values of 11.17±0.05, 10.28±0.04, 6.00±0.06 and 3.08±0.08 have been determined at 298 K. The unusually close values for the first two protonations provide evidence for the encapsulation of a water molecule serving as effector for the second protonation, which is consistent with earlier observations that the exchange of protons bound in the diprotonated species with solvent protons is unusually slow and that 17 O NMR spectra show the presence of an oxygen centre in the same species quite distinct from that of solvent water. Abstract Two novel hexanuclear manganese(III) complexes belonging to the Mn6 family of single-molecule magnets (SMMs), of formulae [Mn6(μ3-O)2(H2N-sao)6(bta)2(EtOH)6]·2EtOH·4H2O (1) and [Mn6(μ3-O)2(H2N-sao)6(pta)2(EtOH)6]·4EtOH (2) [H2N-saoH2 = salicylamidoxime, bta = 1,2,3-benzotriazolate anion, pta = 5-phenyl-tetrazolate anion], have been synthesized and characterized structurally and magnetically. Novel sandwich metallacarboranes commo-[3,3'-Ni(8-SMe2-1,2-C2B9H10)2] (1), commo-[3,3'-Co(8-SMe2-1,2-C2B9H10)2]+ (2+), commo-[3,3'-Ru(8-SMe2-1,2-C2B9H10)2] (4) and commo-[3,3'-Fe(8-SMe2-1,2-C2B9H10)2] (5) have been prepared by reaction of [10-SMe2-7,8-nido-C2B9H10]- with NiCl2 x 6 H2O, CoCl2, [RuCl2(dmso)4] and [FeCl2(dppe)], respectively. Reduction of 2+ with metallic Zn leads to the neutral and isolable complex commo-[3,3'-Co(8-SMe2-1,2-C2B9H10)2] (3). Design of bimetallic magnetic chains based on oxalate complexes: towards single chain magnets

We describe the synthesis, structure and magnetic characterization of several oxalate-based bimetallic 1D systems. We will exemplify how by suitable choice of the molecular building blocks and strict control of their arrangement in the solid state, the magnetic properties of these low-dimensional materials can be tuned to finally obtain bimetallic oxalate chains behaving as single-chain magnets (SCM). First, we will focus on compounds [K(18-crown-6)][MII(bpy)Cr(ox)3] (1, 2; MII = Mn, Co; bpy = C10N2H8). [N,N-bis(1-methyl-2-benzimidazolyl)methyl-N-(bis-2-pyridylmethyl)amine] (L1) and [N,N-bis(2-quinolylmethyl)-N-bis(2-pyridyl)methylamine] (L2) were employed to prepare CuII and CuI complexes for spectroscopic and structural characterization. [L1CuII(H2O)](NO3)2 and [L2CuII(NO3)]NO3 have Jahn–Teller distorted octahedral geometries and give rise to isotropic EPR spectra in frozen solution. [L1CuI(CH3CN)]OTf and [L2CuI(CH3CN)]OTf have distorted trigonal bipyramidal and tetrahedral solid-state structures, respectively.
