Monomer Sequence Distribution Monitoring in Living Carbanionic Copolymerization by Real-Time 1H NMR Spectroscopy

2013

Detailed understanding of the monomer sequence distribution in carbanionic copolymerization was achieved by direct online monitoring of copolymerizations in an NMR tube. Obtaining detailed knowledge of the changing monomer concentration in stock during the reaction, this technique permits to determine the incorporation probability for each monomer at every position of the polymer chain. An in situ kinetic study of two different carbanionic copolymerizations has been carried out. On the one hand, the copolymerization of the structurally similar, protected hydroxystyrene derivatives, p-(1-ethoxy ethoxy)styrene (pEES) and 4-tert-butoxystyrene (tBuOS), and on the other hand the copolymerization…

Poly(1,2-glycerol carbonate): A Fundamental Polymer Structure Synthesized from CO2 and Glycidyl Ethers

2013

The functional, aliphatic poly(1,2-glycerol carbonate) as a fundamental, simple polymer structure based on glycerol and CO2 was prepared by combination of glycidyl ether monomers with carbon dioxide via two different approaches. The material was obtained by two-step procedures either via copolymerization of (i) ethoxy ethyl glycidyl ether (EEGE) or (ii) benzyl glycidyl ether (BGE) with CO2, followed by removal of the respective protecting groups via acidic cleavage for (i) and hydrogenation for (ii). The resulting protected polycarbonate structures and the targeted poly(1,2-glycerol carbonate) were investigated with 1H NMR and 13C NMR spectroscopy as well as 2D-NMR methods. Removal of both …

N,N-Diallylglycidylamine: A Key Monomer for Amino-Functional Poly(ethylene glycol) Architectures

2012

The first application of N,N-diallylglycidylamine (DAGA) as a monomer for anionic ring-opening polymerization is presented. The monomer is obtained in a one-step procedure using epichlorohydrin and N,N-diallylamine. Both random and block copolymers consisting of poly(ethylene glycol) and poly(N,N-diallylglycidylamine) with adjusted DAGA ratios from 2.5 to 24% have been prepared, yielding well-defined materials with low polydispersities (Mw/Mn) in the range 1.04–1.19. Molecular weights ranged between 2600 and 10 300 g mol–1. Isomerization of allylamine to enamine structures during polymerization depending on time, temperature, and counterion has been realized. The kinetics of the formation o…

Synthesis and Structures of Two Triorganotin(IV) Polymers R3Sn{O2CC6H4[N=C(H)}{C(CH3)CH(CH3)-3-OH]-p} n (R = Me and Ph) Containing a 4-[(2Z)-(3-Hydro…

2009

Two new polymeric triorganotin(IV) complexes R3Sn{O2CC6H4[N=C(H)}{C(CH3)CH(CH3)-3-OH]-p} n ([Me3Sn(LH)] n : 1) and ([Ph3Sn(LH)] n : 2) containing a 4-[(2Z)-(3-hydroxy-1-methyl-2-butenylidene)amino]benzoate (LH) framework were prepared. Both compounds have been characterized by 1H, 13C, 119Sn NMR, IR and 119Sn Mossbauer spectroscopic techniques in combination with elemental analyses. The crystal structures of complexes 1 and 2 reveal that they exist as polymeric zig-zag chains in which the LH-bridged Sn-atoms adopt a trans-R3SnO2 trigonal bipyramidal configuration with R groups in the equatorial positions and the axial sites occupied by an oxygen atom from the carboxylate ligand and the alco…

The anionic copolymerization of 5-(N,N-diisopropylamino)isoprene with styrene

1995

The anionic copolymerization of 5-(N,N-diisopropylamino)isoprene (N,N-diisopropyl-2-vinylallylamine) and styrene initiated with alkyllithium compounds is studied. Copolymers obtained from different compositions are characterized by size-exclusion chromatography (SEC), differential scanning calorimetry and by 1 H NMR and 13 C NMR spectroscopy. Under these conditions the dialkylaminoisoprene, similar to butadiene and isoprene, is more reactive than styrene and is incorporated faster into the polymer backbone. The incomplete conversion of the monomers has been attributed to the formation of intra-or intermolecular complexes between the Li + counterion at the chain end and amino groups. Because…

1991

A new rotational viscometer is presented which can be operated up to 2 000 bar and a maximum shear stress of 420 Pa. It allows, for the first time, to investigate the non-Newtonian flow behaviour of moderately concentrated polymer solutions. Results of measurements with two representatives of the system 2-propanol/poly(butyl methacrylate) with weight-average molecular weights Mw = 520 000 and Mw = 2 050 000, and ratios of weight- to number-average molecular weights Mw/Mn = 1,08 and Mw/Mw = 1,23, resp. in the region of moderate polymer concentrations are reported. For a ca. 7 wt.-% solution of the higher-molecular-weight polymer one obtains viscometric relaxation times τ0 varying from 1 to 1…

Structure and dynamics of grafted polymer layers: A Monte Carlo simulation

1991

The bond fluctuation model of polymer chains on lattices is used to study layers of polymers anchored with one end at a hard wall, assuming good solvent conditions and repulsive interactions between the monomers and the wall. Chain lengths from N=10 to N=80 and grafting densities σ from 0.025 to 0.20 are considered, both for the ‘‘quenched’’ case, where the anchor points are kept fixed at randomly chosen surface sites, and the ‘‘annealed’’ case, where lateral diffusion of the anchored ends at the wall is considered. Profiles of monomer density and free end density, chain linear dimensions parallel and perpendicular to the wall, as well as corresponding mean square displacements of inner and…

Monte Carlo simulations of chain dynamics in polymer brushes

1994

The bond-fluctuation model of polymer chains has been used to study layers of end-grafted polymers anchoring at repulsive walls for a broad range of chain length, grafting densities and solvent quality. The dynamics of monomers and associated relaxation times are investigated and interpreted by phenomenological theories and scaling arguments. The case is also considered where a chain is cut off from its anchor point and the chain is subsequently expelled from the brush. Both the velocity with which the chain leaves the brush and the associated conformational changes (chain contraction etc.) are analysed and interpreted in terms of recent theoretical concepts.

Local dynamics in supramolecular polymer networks probed by magnetic particle nanorheology

2019

Transient supramolecular polymer networks are promising candidates as soft self-healing or stimuli-sensitive materials. In this paper, we employ a novel nanorheological approach, magnetic particle nanorheology (MPN), in order to better understand the local dynamic properties of model supramolecular networks from a molecular point of view. Hence, the bond strength between four-arm star-shaped polyethylene glycol (PEG) functionalized at the four extremities with terpyridine ligands is tuned by implementing different metal ions with variable complexation affinities for the ligand. We show that MNP allows for the evaluation of the strength and connectivity of the polymer networks by the estimat…

Polymer absorption in dense polymer brushes vs. polymer adsorption on the brush-solvent interface

2014

Molecular-dynamics simulations of a coarse-grained model of a dense brush of flexible polymers (of type A) interacting with a long flexible macromolecule (of type B) are presented, considering the case of an attractive AB interaction, while effective interactions between AA and BB pairs of monomers are repulsive. Varying the strength of the attraction between unlike monomers, an adsorption transition at some critical value is found, where the B-chain is bound to the brush-solvent interface, similar to the adsorption on a planar solid substrate. However, when is much higher than , the long macromolecule is gradually “sucked in” the brush, developing many pieces that are locally stretched in …
