Nasal airway in cleft-palate patients: acoustic rhinometric data

The objective of this study was to investigate an instrumental assessment technique for acquiring reproducible, metric data on the nasal airway in cleft-palate associated nasal dysplasia. A consecutive sample of 23 unilateral, 17 bilateral CLP patients and 15 controls with subjective normal nasal patency from a cleft-palate rehabilitation centre were studied. A series of transnasal acoustic measurements (pressure wave: 55 dB for 2 ms) of nasal volume were performed before and after topical decongestion with 2 x 0.3 mg of xylometazoline. We have analyzed the expression of cytokeratin polypeptides in subcolumnar reserve cells of the human uterine endocervical mucosa and the other epithelial cells using immunoperoxidase and immunofluorescence microscopy as well as by applying two-dimensional gel electrophoresis to microdissected cytoskeletal preparations. Kinin receptor status in normal and inflammed gastric mucosa

No documented studies have been reported on the presence of B1 and B2 kinin receptors in the mammalian gastric mucosa. This first study aimed to immunolocalise sites of B1 and B2 kinin receptors in the human pyloric gastric mucosa and to evaluate its role in gastritis. Biopsies were obtained from patients with dyspepsia during endoscopic examination of the patient. The diagnosis and grading of the gastritis was performed on histological examination. Sections were immunostained for both B1 and B2 receptors using rabbit anti-human B1 and B2 kinin receptor antibodies. Autoimmune enteropathy and colitis in an adult patient

The presence of circulating autoantibodies to gut enterocytes has been very rarely described in adults and is considered a possible cause of refractory sprue. Our aims was to describe the case of an adult patient with serum anti-enterocyte autoantibodies associated with a clinical picture characterized by involvement of both the small intestine and colon. A female, age 50, had suffered from diarrhea with mucus and blood, abdominal pain, thinness, anemia, and leukopenia since the age of 20. Gluten affects epithelial differentiation-associated genes in small intestinal mucosa of coeliac patients

Summary In coeliac disease gluten induces an immunological reaction in genetically susceptible patients, and influences on epithelial cell proliferation and differentiation in the small-bowel mucosa. Hemangiopericytoma of the Oral Cavity After a Ten-Year Follow-up

Hemangiopericytoma (HPC) is a mesenchymal tumour that may be benign, malignant, or occur in an intermediate form. We report an unusual case of hemangiopericytoma located in the buccal mucosal region. The histopathologic features showed increased cellularity, necrosis, hemorrhage, low proliferation index, and 4 or less mitotic figures per 10 high-power fields. Since this histological pattern suggests an intermediate form characterized by unpredictable clinical behavior, life-long follow-up is essential. In this patient no recurrences or distant metastases were evident at 10-yr follow-up.

Mosaicism due to postzygotic mutations in women with focal dermal hypoplasia

International audience; Focal dermal hypoplasia (FDH, Goltz syndrome, MIM: #305600) constitutes a rare multisystem genetic disorder of the skin, skeleton, teeth and eyes with considerable variation in the clinical features. FDH is transmitted as an X-linked dominant trait and is caused by mutations in PORCN. In males, hemizygous PORCN mutations are lethal in utero. Heat shock protein-27 protects human bronchial epithelial cells against oxidative stress-mediated apoptosis: possible implication in asthma.

Inflammation of the human bronchial epithelium, as observed in asthmatics, is characterized by the selective death of the columnar epithelial cells, which desquamate from the basal cells. Tissue repair initiates from basal cells that resist inflammation. Here, we have evaluated the extent of apoptosis as well as the Hsp27 level of expression in epithelial cells from bronchial biopsy samples taken from normal and asthmatic subjects. Hsp27 is a chaperone whose expression protects against oxidative stress. We report that in asthmatic subjects the basal epithelium cells express a high level of Hsp27 but no apoptotic morphology. Possible link between Hashimoto's thyroiditis and oral lichen planus: a novel association found

Objectives: Hashimoto's thyroiditis as well as lichen planus has been associated to a number of disorders, generally of auto-immune origin. A novel possible association between oral lichen planus (OLP) and Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) is here proposed on the basis of a cross-sectional survey. Materials and methods: One hundred and five unrelated OLP patients were considered. Diagnosis of HT was based on positive serum anti-TPO, anti-Tg, TSH levels and the typical ultrasound pattern of the thyroid gland. Cold loops applied to bipolar resectoscope: A safe "one-step" myomectomy for treatment of submucosal myomas with intramural development

AIM: To assess the safety and efficacy of cold loop myomectomy applied to bipolar resectoscope to perform "one-step" myomectomy of submucosal myomas with intramural involvement. METHODS: Seventy-two patients with at least one symptomatic G1 or G2 myoma (Wamsteker's classification) underwent cold loop myomectomy from January 2011 to January 2013.
