ARGUMENTS FOR CSR-BASED SUSTAINABLE COMPETITIVENESS OF MULTINATIONALS IN EMERGING MARKETS (PART I)

2014

The (two parts of the) paper aims to bring into discussion the case of CSR-based sustainable competitiveness of multinationals in emerging market economies, through an interdisciplinary approach (international business and strategic management) applied to a multilevel analysis (country and company). The main conclusion of the paper is that, despite the circumstances that nowadays characterize international business in general and the emerging market economies in particular, such a transformation in business models is not only desirable, but mandatory. Key arguments in favor of this assumption are found (both theoretically and empirically) at global/general level and, as well, at the emergin…

Circular economy and agritourism: a sustainable behavioral model for tourists and farmers in the post-COVID era.

2023

Introduction: In recent years, issues related to environmental and ecosystem protection have been given greater consideration than in the past. The goal of adopting sustainable development models is vigorously pursued in the European Union and is reflected concretely in the new Common Agricultural Policy 20232027. The circular economy can certainly be an emerging economic response that can eectively replace growth models centered on a linear view. Agriculture and tourism are two crucial sectors where the “green transition” should be encouraged to help achieve sustainability goals through economic circularity. Agritourism’s activity may be relevant in contributing to a behavioral change based…

DEVELOPMENT OF SUSTAINABLE METROPOLITAN AREAS USING A MULTI-SCALE DECISION SUPPORT SYSTEM

2012

A sustainable and sustaining planning strategy is globally important for metropolitan areas. Sustainable planning addresses the development of strategies to reduce the use of resources, increase economic efficiency and improve integration of social aspects. In contrast, splinter development (e.g. urban sprawl) involves damage to nature and generation of an increasing volume of traffic (these are the main criticisms following a study by Newman and Kenworthy (1989) on the relationship between settlement density and energy consumption). Interestingly, the overly compact city also has this effect as it may generate traffic flows for accessing green and leisure areas, or changes of residence due…

Stratégie d'aménagement pour le développement durable d'aires métropolitaines par un système multi-scalaire d'aide à la décision : l'exemple de Vienne

2012

A sustainable and sustaining planning strategy is globally important for metropolitan areas. Sustainable planning addresses the development of strategies to reduce the use of resources, increase economic efficiency and improve integration of social aspects (e.g. pedestrian-friendly environments, well-balanced public and private transport modes, efficient street networks, land use, movement economy; access for all to jobs, retail, services; healthcare, culture and leisure). In contrast, splinter development (e.g. urban sprawl) involves damage to nature and generation of an increasing volume of traffic (these are the main criticisms following a study by Newman and Kenworthy (1989) on the rela…

Poissonin yhtälön nopeat ratkaisijat

2016

Tutkielmassa esitellään Poissonin yhtälö sekä sen diskretointi. Lisäksi käydään läpi kaksi nopeaa numeerista menetelmää yhtälön ratkaisemiseksi. Yksinkertaisuuden vuoksi rajoitutaan kaksiulotteisiin tehtäviin, joissa on voimassa Dirichle’t reunaehto. In this thesis we introduce Poisson’s equation and its discretization. In addition we go through two fast numerical methods for solving the equation. The thesis is limited only to two-dimensional cases with Dirichlet boundary condition. The…

A Domain Imbedding Method with Distributed Lagrange Multipliers for Acoustic Scattering Problems

2003

The numerical computation of acoustic scattering by bounded twodimensional obstacles is considered. A domain imbedding method with Lagrange multipliers is introduced for the solution of the Helmholtz equation with a second-order absorbing boundary condition. Distributed Lagrange multipliers are used to enforce the Dirichlet boundary condition on the scatterer. The saddle-point problem arising from the conforming finite element discretization is iteratively solved by the GMRES method with a block triangular preconditioner. Numerical experiments are performed with a disc and a semi-open cavity as scatterers.

Representation of Stationary Multivariate Gaussian Processes Fractional Differential Approach

2011

In this paper, the fractional spectral moments method (H-FSM) is used to generate stationary Gaussian multivariate processes with assigned power spectral density matrix. To this aim, firstly the N-variate process is expressed as sum of N fully coherent normal random vectors, and then, the representation in terms of HFSM is used.

Arm Space Decomposition as a Strategy for Tackling Large Scale Multi-armed Bandit Problems

2013

Recent multi-armed bandit based optimization schemes provide near-optimal balancing of arm exploration against arm exploitation, allowing the optimal arm to be identified with probability arbitrarily close to unity. However, the convergence speed drops dramatically as the number of bandit arms grows large, simply because singling out the optimal arm requires experimentation with all of the available arms. Furthermore, effective exploration and exploitation typically demands computational resources that grow linearly with the number of arms. Although the former problem can be remedied to some degree when prior knowledge about arm correlation is available, the latter problem persists. In this…

Parallel Genetic Solution for Multiobjective MDO

1997

Publisher Summary This chapter reviews a multiobjective, multidisciplinary design optimization of two-dimensional airfoil designs. The control points on leading and trailing edges remain fixed, and the y-coordinates of the other control points are allowed to change during the optimization process. The grid for the Euler solver depends continuously and smoothly on the design parameters. The number of nodes and elements in the mesh might vary according to design because the meshes for the Helmholtz solver are done using the local fitting. The computations are made on an IBM SP2 parallel computer using high-performance switch and the MPICH message-passing library. As gradients are not required…

Physics meets Bohemia Einstein in Bohemia Michael D. Gordin Princeton University Press, 2020. 360 pp.

2020

In Einstein in Bohemia, Michael Gordin seeks to illuminate the elusive significance of Einstein9s brief tenure in Prague, both for the biography of the famous physicist and for the cultural history of Bohemia. An expert in the history of modern physical sciences and of Russian, European, and American history, Gordin pulls together a wealth of information about the wider context of Einstein9s stay in Prague and of the cultural, scientific, and political history of Bohemia.
