Multiplicity fluctuations in one- And two-dimensional angular intervals compared with analytic QCD calculations

1999

Multiplicity fluctuations in rings around the jet axis and in off-axis cones have been measured by the DELPHI collaboration in $e^+e^-$ annihilations into hadrons at LEP energies. The measurements are compared with analytical perturbative QCD calculations for the corresponding multiparton system, using the concept of Local Parton Hadron Duality. Some qualitative features are confirmed by the data but substantial quantitative deviations are observed.

Energy evolution of the moments of the hadron distribution in QCD jets including NNLL resummation and NLO running-coupling corrections

2013

The moments of the single inclusive momentum distribution of hadrons in QCD jets, are studied in the next-to-modified-leading-log approximation (NMLLA) including next-to-leading-order (NLO) corrections to the alpha_s strong coupling. The evolution equations are solved using a distorted Gaussian parametrisation, which successfully reproduces the spectrum of charged hadrons of jets measured in e+e- collisions. The energy dependencies of the maximum peak, multiplicity, width, kurtosis and skewness of the jet hadron distribution are computed analytically. Comparisons of all the existing jet data measured in e+e- collisions in the range sqrt(s)~2-200 GeV to the NMLLA+NLO* predictions allow one t…

Latest results from the EbyE NLO EKRT model

2017

We review the results from the event-by-event next-to-leading order perturbative QCD + saturation + viscous hydrodynamics (EbyE NLO EKRT) model. With a simultaneous analysis of LHC and RHIC bulk observables we systematically constrain the QCD matter shear viscosity-to-entropy ratio eta/s(T), and test the initial state computation. In particular, we study the centrality dependences of hadronic multiplicities, pT spectra, flow coefficients, relative elliptic flow fluctuations, and various flow-correlations in 2.76 and 5.02 TeV Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC and 200 GeV Au+Au collisions at RHIC. Overall, our results match remarkably well with the LHC and RHIC measurements, and predictions for the…

Pinning down QCD-matter shear viscosity in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions via EbyE fluctuations using pQCD + saturation + hydrodynamics

2015

We introduce an event-by-event pQCD + saturation + hydro ("EKRT") framework for high-energy heavy-ion collisions, where we compute the produced fluctuating QCD-matter energy densities from next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative QCD (pQCD) using saturation to control soft particle production, and describe the space-time evolution of the QCD matter with viscous hydrodynamics, event by event (EbyE). We compare the computed centrality dependence of hadronic multiplicities, p_T spectra and flow coefficients v_n against LHC and RHIC data. We compare also the computed EbyE probability distributions of relative fluctuations of v_n, as well as correlations of 2 and 3 event-plane angles, with LHC d…

Multiplicity distributions and long range rapidity correlations

2010

The physics of the initial conditions of heavy ion collisions is dominated by the nonlinear gluonic interactions of QCD. These lead to the concepts of parton saturation and the Color Glass Condensate (CGC). We discuss recent progress in calculating multi-gluon correlations in this framework, prompted by the observation that these correlations are in fact easier to compute in a dense system (nucleus-nucleus) than a dilute one (proton-proton).

Inclusive production of ρ0(770), f0(980) and f2(1270) mesons in νμ charged current interactions

2001

The inclusive production of the meson resonances $\rho^{0}(770)$, $f_0(980)$ and $f_2(1270)$ in neutrino-nucleus charged current interactions has been studied with the NOMAD detector exposed to the wide band neutrino beam generated by 450 GeV protons at the CERN SPS. For the first time the $f_{0}(980)$ meson is observed in neutrino interactions. The statistical significance of its observation is 6 standard deviations. The presence of $f_{2}(1270)$ in neutrino interactions is reliably established. The average multiplicity of these three resonances is measured as a function of several kinematic variables. The experimental results are compared to the multiplicities obtained from a simulation b…

Jet evolution in a dense medium: event-by-event fluctuations and multi-particle correlations

2017

International audience; We study the gluon distribution produced via successive medium-induced branchings by an energetic jet propagating through a weakly-coupled quark-gluon plasma. We show that under suitable approximations, the jet evolution is a Markovian stochastic process, which is exactly solvable. For this process, we construct exact analytic solutions for all the n-point correlation functions describing the gluon distribution in the space of energy [M. A. Escobedo, E. Iancu, Event-by-event fluctuations in the medium-induced jet evolution, JHEP 05 (2016) 008. arXiv: arXiv:1601.03629 , doi: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/JHEP05(2016)008 , M. A. Escobedo, E. Azimuthal harmonics of color fields in a high energy nucleus

2015

Recent experimental results have revealed a surprisingly rich structure of multiparticle azimuthal correlations in high energy proton-nucleus collisions. Final state collective effects can be responsible for many of the observed effects, but it has recently been argued that a part of these correlations are present already in the wavefunctions of the colliding particles. We evaluate the momentum space 2-particle cumulant azimuthal anisotropy coefficients v_n{2}, n=2,3,4 from fundamental representation Wilson line distributions describing the high energy nucleus. These would correspond to the flow coefficients in very forward proton nucleus scattering. We find significant differences beteen W…

Multiplicity dependence of jet-like two-particle correlation structures in p–Pb collisions at √sNN =5.02 TeV

2015

Two-particle angular correlations between unidentified charged trigger and associated particles are measured by the ALICE detector in p–Pb collisions at a nucleon–nucleon centre-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV. The transverse-momentum range 0.7 < pT,assoc < pT,trig < 5.0 GeV/c is examined, to include correlations induced by jets originating from low momentum-transfer scatterings (minijets). The correlations expressed as associated yield per trigger particle are obtained in the pseudorapidity range |η| < 0.9. The near-side long-range pseudorapidity correlations observed in high-multiplicity p–Pb collisions are subtracted from both near-side short-range and away-side correlations in order to remov…

Centrality Dependence of the Charged-Particle Multiplicity Density at Midrapidity in Pb-Pb Collisions atsNN=2.76  TeV

2011

The centrality dependence of the charged-particle multiplicity density at midrapidity in Pb-Pb collisions at root s(NN) = 2: 76 TeV is presented. The charged-particle density normalized per participating nucleon pair increases by about a factor of 2 from peripheral (70%-80%) to central (0%-5%) collisions. The centrality dependence is found to be similar to that observed at lower collision energies. The data are compared with models based on different mechanisms for particle production in nuclear collisions.
