The potential of nonpathogenic Fusarium oxysporum and other biological control organisms for suppressing fusarium wilt of banana

2006

Publication Inra prise en compte dans l'analyse bibliométrique des publications scientifiques mondiales sur les Fruits, les Légumes et la Pomme de terre. Période 2000-2012. http://prodinra.inra.fr/record/256699; The aim of this study was to evaluate the ability of nonpathogenic F. oxysporum and Trichoderma isolates from suppressive soils in South Africa to suppress fusarium wilt of banana in the glasshouse. Several biological control agents and commercial biological control products were included in the study. The isolates were first screened in vitro on potato dextrose agar. In glasshouse evaluations, the fungal and bacterial isolates were established on banana roots before they were repla…

Effect of pulp cell number and assimilate availability on dry matter accumulation rate in a banana fruit (Musa sp. AAA group 'Grande Naine' (Cavendis…

2001

Fruit position on the bunch (inflorescence) is an important part of variability in banana fruit weight at harvest, as fruits at the bottom of the bunch (distal fruits) are approx. 40% smaller than those at the top (proximal fruits). In this study, the respective roles of cell number and cell filling rate in the development of pulp dry weight are estimated. To this end, the source/sink ratio in the plant was altered at different stages of fruit development. Leaf shading (reducing resource availability), bunch bagging (increasing sink activity by increasing fruit temperature), and bunch trimming (decreasing sink size by fruit pruning), applied once cell division had finished, showed that the …

Doubled haploid production in fruit crops

2006

The interest of fruit breeders in haploids and doubled haploids (DH), lies in the possibility of shortening the time needed to produce homozygous lines compared to conventional breeding. Haplo-diploidization through gametic embryogenesis allows single-step development of complete homozygous lines from heterozygous parents. In a conventional breeding programme, a pure line is developed after several generations of selfing. With fruit crops, characterized by a long reproductive cycle, a high degree of heterozygosity, large size, and, sometimes, self-incompatibility, there is no way to obtain haploidization through conventional methods. This paper reviews the current status of research on doub…

Isolated hevein-like domains, but not 31-kd endochitinases, are responsible for IgE-mediated in vitro and in vivo reactions in latex-fruit syndrome.

2005

Background Individuals with natural rubber latex allergy often have immediate reactions to plant-derived foods and fresh fruits, such as avocado and banana. IgE of these patients has been shown to bind endochitinases containing an N-terminal hevein-like domain (HLD). However, evidence on 31-kd endochitinase-induced reactions in vivo is lacking. Objective We sought to assess the clinical significance of 31-kd endochitinases and isolated HLDs in latex-fruit syndrome. Methods The 31-kd endochitinases and corresponding HLDs were purified or produced from avocado, banana, latex, and wheat germ. Skin prick test reactivities against purified proteins were examined in 15 patients with natural rubbe…

Breaking the “Fourth Wall” in Qualitative Research: Participant-Led Digital Data Construction

2018

This article reconstructs the typical researcher-participant focus - where the participants are doing for us - instead we followed the participants’ lead in the construction of research. Using a qualitative literacy event case study as an example, we describe how participants unexpectedly co-constructed knowledge through a participant-led digital data collection. In this theoretical article, we provide an explanation of the original study, which used observations, semi-structured interviews, and home visits as a collective qualitative case study on parental participation in social literacy practices. The original investigation led to the important shift that occurred in participant-research…

Utility of the polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphisms of the intergenic spacer region of the rDNA for characterizing Gib…

2004

Summary In the present report, a total of thirty-one isolates of Gibberella fujikuroi (Sawada) Wollenw. species complex of Fusarium (section Liseola) morphologically classified as F. moniliforme according to the taxonomy of Nelson, Toussoun and Marasas (1983) were analyzed for their ability to produce fumonisin B1 and fumonisin B2 by an optimized liquid chromatographic method. They were isolated from three hosts (Zea mays, Musa sapientum and Pinus pinea). The results indicate that M. sapientum is a preferential host for G. fujikuroi isolates with low or null capacity for producing fumonisins, while isolates from Z. mays and P. pinea are generally high fumonisin producers. The molecular char…

IL-4-mediated drug resistance in colon cancer stem cells

2008

Cancer stem cells are defined as cells able to both extensively self-renew and differentiate into progenitors. Cancer stem cells are thus likely to be responsible for maintaining or spreading a cancer, and may be the most relevant targets for cancer therapy. The CD133 glycoprotein was recently described as a reliable cancer stem-like cell marker in colon carcinoma. CD133+ cells are both necessary and sufficient to initiate tumour growth in animal models. The CD133+ cell population and spheroid cultures contain cells expressing the stem cell marker Musashi-1 which is involved in maintenance of stem cell fate in several tissues and importantly, this expression is maintained in stem-like cells…

Elektroniset tutkimusaineistot etnologiatieteissä : tulevaisuutta vai nykypäivää?

2003

Artikkeli tarkastelee elektronista julkaisemista, elektronisten aineistojen käytettävyyttä ja muita Internetin tarjoamia mahdollisuuksia ja niihin sisältyviä ongelmia etnologisen tutkimuksen näkökulmasta. Artikkeli käsittelee erityisesti Internetin käyttöä aineistonkeruuvälineenä sekä elektronisiin lähteisiin kuten tietokantoihin, virtuaalisiin yhteisöihin, keskustelupalstoihin ja kotisivuihin sisältyviä tutkimuksellisia ongelmia. Yksi tieteellisen tutkimuksen vaatimuksista on aineiston säilyvyys ja tutkimuksen toistettavuus. Miten näitä periaatteita noudatetaan Internet-aineistojen kohdalla? Entä millaista lähdekritiikkiä Internet-aineistoon sovelletaan? Millaisia eettisiä ja tekijänoikeud…

Diskurssintutkimus - monitieteinen ja monimenetelmäinen ala

2018

There is a growing interest towards metatheoretical examination of linguistic research. This special issue contributes to this examination from the perspective of discourse studies. The issue consists of seven articles which present methods in different areas of discourse studies. The aim of this introductory article is firstly to define the notions of discourse and method. Secondly, through the presentation of the articles of the issue, we present a variety of methods pertaining to different stages of research. In particular, methods of data collection and classification, as well as of data analysis, are presented. We conclude the article with some remarks on the future avenues of the meth…
