Becoming Politically Active: Life Courses and the Formation of Capitals among Young People of Migrant Origin in Finland
2020
This article focuses on the life courses of young people of migrant origin who are active in civic and political fields in Finland. The aim is to analyse, from the micro-level life course perspective, the issues in their lives that have helped them to become active. The article draws on empirical data collected using participatory methods. Four young people of migrant origin participated in the research process and contributed to the data analysis. The theoretical framework consists of Bourdieusian concepts of political habitus and emotional, cultural and social capital. Global to local : English in the lives of five Helsinki-based immigrant entrepreneurs
2014
Tutkimuksen empiirinen osa on toteutettu puolistrukturoidulla teemahaastattelulla. Empiirinen aineisto on nauhoitettu ja litteroitu. Haastattelu- ja tutkimusteemojen valinta pohjaa niin teoreettiseen …
Barriers to Sport Participation Faced by Ethiopian and Eritrean Migrant Women in Switzerland
2021
Global migration (both forced and voluntary) has intensified the interaction between existing and emerging cultures. Sport has gained recognition as an effective tool for enhancing migrants’ overall wellbeing, active participation, and social integration. However, a growing number of studies have shown that migrant women have the lowest rate of sport participation, especially in organized clubs. These findings have brought the accessibility and inclusion of existing sport structure and culture in host countries into question. Using the six-factor model of constraints by Tsai and Coleman (1999), this study explored the barriers that hinder Ethiopian and Eritrea migrant women (EEMW) from part…
The use of language in migrant stay-at-home parents’ process of integration : Experiences of inclusion and exclusion
2017
This paper examines the use of language and how it contributes to the experiences of inclusion and exclusion of recent migrant stay-at-home parents in Finland. The study shows how the use of language facilitates the integration process of newly arrived stay-at-home parents of migrant background and affects their experiences of social inclusion and/or exclusion. The study uses the translingual approach (Canagarajah, 2013) to shed light on the multilingual reality migrants are faced with in their new surroundings. The approach is ethnographic and the data is interpreted using data-driven conventional content analysis (Tuomi & Sarajärvi, 2009, pp. 108–113). The results suggest that English wor…
Aktiivisen kansalaisuuden mahdollisuudet kotouttamistyön ulkoisten ehtojen ja maahanmuuttajien tarpeiden ristipaineissa
2018
Nykyisessä poliittisessa keskustelussa aktiivinen kansalaisuus ymmärretään usein kapeasti työkansalaisuutena. Artikkelissa analysoidaan, miten aktiivinen kansalaisuus rakentuu kotouttamistyön rakenteellisten ehtojen ja maahanmuuttajien tarpeiden huomioimisen ristiriidassa. Teoreettisesti nojaudutaan Amartya Senin toimintamahdollisuuksien teoriaan, joka painottaa erilaisten kyvykkyyksien sekä autonomisten toimintamahdollisuuksien merkitystä aktiivisessa kansalaisuudessa. Tuloksena havaitaan, että ammattilaisten näkemyksissä painottuu ristiriita järjestelmän tarpeille rakentuvan työkansalaisuuden ja kotoutujien autonomiaa tukevien toimintamahdollisuuksia vahvistavan työn välille. Myös kotiäi…

An immigrant mother’s thoughts on the use of Finnish in English workbooks
2018
I moved to Finland with my family three and a half years ago from Hungary. My older son (aged 11 then) spent a year in a Finnish preparatory class before he continued his studies in the 5th grade. He chose English as his A1 language because he had learnt it for three years in a Hungarian school. Despite his knowledge, the English home assignments proved to be very difficult for him to solve. The activity book relied greatly on the majority language: the instructions and many of the exercises required Finnish knowledge. We spent a lot of time using an electronic dictionary to do the English homework together. Finnish skills were needed even in the English language tests that he had to take, …
Motivations and domain specificity in intercultural adaptation : bloggers' experiences in their new host countries
2014
The current qualitative study investigates immigrant’s intrinsic (internal) and extrinsic (external) motivations and how they surface in the intercultural adaption process. Additionally, it aims to answer whether immigrant’s adaptation orientations differ between private and public (life) domains by testing Boski’s (2008) IAFS model [the model of integration as functional(partial) specialization]. It is a fairly recent model of adaptation and only few prior studies have utilized it. The study concentrates on voluntary migrants, individuals, who have made a personal choice to leave their homelands. In the current study naturally occurring data in a form of weblogs were utilized as research d…
