Mourning Missing Migrants: Ambiguous Loss and the Grief of Strangers

While the term missing refers to various instances and practices, we focus on the bodies of deceased migrants that remain unidentified, and on the inability of families to mourn someone when there is no body to grieve for. We deploy some ethnographic fragments of how Italian communities sometimes mourn those who are buried without a name and we describe the many problems of mourning someone whose fate is unknown through a discussion of the notion of ‘ambiguous loss’. Our contribution articulates some of the politics around deaths in migration by considering how missing migrants and their bodies are mourned in multiplicity. peerReviewed

Tämän tutkielman tarkoituksena on selvittää, miten pakolaistaustaiset nuoret huomioidaan koulutuksen normiohjauksessa Suomessa. Tutkimuksen keskiössä ovat koulutuksellinen tasa-arvo, koulutusasteiden väliset nivelvaiheet sekä koulutuksen yhteiskunnalliset tehtävät opetussuunnitelmien perusteiden valossa. Tarkasteluni kattaa kaikki koulutusasteet perusopetuksesta korkeakoulutukseen sekä nivelvaiheiden ja kotoutumisen koulutukset. It has been a long tradition in Finland to use locally published textbooks in primary foreign language education. The books have been designed for linguistically homogenous groups of students, which explains why Finnish, as the learners’ L1, is the instructive metalanguage chosen for the EFL activity books. This study is an attempt to better understand the relationship between Finns and Russian minorities living in Finland. This study considers the role of perceived threats to the attitudes of Finnish adolescents towards Russian minorities. The theoretical framework for this study was the integrated threat theory (ITT). In this article, we investigate adult migrants’ computer skills. The article is based on a questionnaire sent to e.g. migrant organizations and Finnish as L2 teachers around Finland. First, we review some recent studies of the use of computers and the internet by migrants. We then discuss the results of the questionnaire with specifi c reference to how often the migrants investigated in this study use a computer, what they use it for and what kinds of attitudes they have towards using it.
