Language, (em)power(ment) and affective capitalism : the case of an entrepreneurship workshop for refugees in Germany

Abstract This paper seeks to advance research on the nexus of language, work-related training and affective capitalism by focusing on an entrepreneurship workshop organized for newly arrived refugees in Germany. Despite the occupational orientation, the primary objective of the workshop was not establishing a business but “empowering” the participants by guiding them to adopt “an entrepreneurial mindset”. Artikkeli tarkastelee maaseutumaisella alueella asuvien maahanmuuttajien kotoutumista useiden eri tekijöiden kautta. Tutkimuksessa on hyödynnetty sekä kvantitatiivista postikyselyä että kvalitatiivista teemahaastattelua. Kotoutumisesta piirtyvä kuva näyttää useimpien maahanmuuttajien kohdalla myönteiseltä. Erityisesti virolaisten tilanne on selvästi muita valoisampi: heidän suomen kielen taitonsa on muita ryhmiä parempi, ja he ovat työllistyneet ja onnistuneet vakauttamaan työmarkkina-asemaansa muita ryhmiä paremmin. AbstractFinland has only relatively recently become a country of immigration, and as a result most immigration and integration policy legislation is also relatively recent. Since the 1990s, the number of migrants to Finland has increased steadily, motivating the adoption of various policy measures to regulate migration and support integration. Digital materialities in the diasporic mourning of migrant death

This article examines memorialization among the family and friends of those who have died at the world’s deadliest border in the Mediterranean Sea. Digital media platforms are central spaces for new, innovative forms of coping with ambiguous loss or the inability to mourn over a dead body. The analysis focuses on the role of digital media technologies and the relationship between digital and material elements in memorialization. I examine the creation and circulation of digital objects of memorialization: visual assemblages in which the material and digital intertwine. Gender equality is an essential part of Finnish self-understanding. The public discussion on equality does not, however, only focus on gender; it is also used to promote antiimmigration-minded, homophobic opinions. In the article, the co-existence of contradictory discourses on gender equality is interpreted as populist rhetoric. The participation paradox: demand for and fear of immigrant participation

In this paper, we address the ambivalence in European immigrant integration discourses toward the political participation of immigrants. We show how this ambivalence manifests in what we call a ‘participation paradox’, which is constituted by two apparently conflicting, but potentially mutually reinforcing characteristics of the discourse. The first emphasizes the need for immigrants to be active in order to attain a well-integrated society and well-functioning democratic polity; the second is a call for the protection of liberal democratic institutions from the alleged ‘illiberal threats’ that migrants pose to society. Building on Ilse van Liempt’s (2023) lecture, this commentary addresses the connection and shift between forced displacement and local emplacement by addressing what becoming part of the city means for racialized immigrants. By bringing forward the notion of racialization I hope to contribute to a growing body of literature discussing how malleable and productive the concept of race – albeit erased and relegated to the past – keeps on shaping conversations about and across Europe.
