Boys learning craft skills : Rural artisan apprenticeships in early modern Finland

Research on handicrafts has generally concentrated on the study of urban artisans and guilds. However, not all artisans operated in towns, nor were rural artisans always small marginal groups. For instance, the majority of Finnish artisans lived and worked in the countryside. They had the right to take on apprentices; therefore, most rural artisans received their training from artisans working in the same environment. This article characterizes apprentices in the early nineteenth century in Finland and studies how rural artisans organized their occupational training. In this article, I shall examine how the personal names of the Finnish-speaking population of rural Finland, who themselves were generally unable to write, were written in Swedish equivalents in various documents in the 18th and 19th centuries, and how this influenced the formation of their identities. This article avails the concept of social generation to explore how intergenerational differences contribute to the diversity in the appropriation of mobile telephony in rural India. Rural India has experienced numerous social changes such as the decline of agriculture, changes in caste and gender relationships, and rising levels of education which have influenced different age groups in distinct ways during recent decades. Millaista apua ja hoivaa maaseudun asukkaat tarvitsevat – entä millaista apua paikallinen yhteisö voi tarjota? Maaseudun asukkaiden vapaaehtoisen toiminnan yhdistäminen osaksi paikallista palvelujen tarjontaa voisi ratkaista monia harvaan asuttujen alueiden terveyden edistämisen haasteita. Omaehtoinen, hyvinvointia edistävä yhteisöllinen toiminta on jo osa monien maaseudulla asuvien arkea. Samalla yhteisöllisyys on tärkeä arvo, jota halutaan vaalia osana maaseudun elämäntapaa.
