The safety of intravenous fluorescein for confocal laser endomicroscopy in the gastrointestinal tract

2010

Aliment Pharmacol Ther 31, 548–552 Summary Background  Confocal laser endomicroscopy (CLE) is rapidly emerging as a valuable tool for gastrointestinal endoscopic imaging. Fluorescent contrast agents are used to optimize imaging with CLE, and intravenous fluorescein is the most widely used contrast agent. Fluorescein is FDA-cleared for diagnostic angiography of the retina. For these indications, the safety profile of fluorescein has been well-documented; however, to date, fluorescein is not cleared for use with CLE. Aims  To estimate the rate of serious and total adverse events attributable to intravenous fluorescein when used for gastrointestinal CLE. Methods  We performed a cross sectional…

Analysis of interobserver variability for endomicroscopy of the gastrointestinal tract

2014

a b s t r a c t Background: Endomicroscopy allows in vivo microscopic investigation of enteral mucosa during endo- scopic examinations. The aim of this study was to determine interobserver variability in the evaluation of endomicroscopic pictures of several organs by groups of investigators composed of confocal experts, pathologists and students. Methods: Twenty-five selected representative endomicroscopic pictures of the colon, stomach and oesophagus (total number, 75) were evaluated based on tissue, inflammatory and neoplastic changes (secondary endpoints). The endomicroscopic presence of neoplastic features was the primary endpoint and correlated with the final histological diagnosis. Re…

Radiologisch assistierte perkutane Gastro-/Enterostomie - Retrospektive Analyse von 90 Eingriffen

1996

PURPOSE To analyse retrospectively the indications, technique and results of radiologically induced gastrostomies or enterostomies. PATIENTS AND METHOD Radiologically assisted gastrostomies or enterostomies were induced in 90 patients, mostly with high grade obstructions due to head and neck tumours or oesophageal tumours. 19/90 patients had had previous resection of the oesophagus or gastric operations. RESULTS A catheter was successfully introduced in all patients. In 11/90 patients this was followed by a two-stage procedure. In 16/90 patients puncture was performed under CT control because of some anatomical peculiarity. Serious complication occurred in 9/90 patients but in only one was …

Machine Perfusions in Liver Transplantation: The Evidence‐Based Position Paper of the Italian Society of Organ and Tissue Transplantation

2020

The use of machine perfusion (MP) in liver transplantation (LT) is spreading worldwide. However, its efficacy has not been demonstrated, and its proper clinical use has far to go to be widely implemented. The Società Italiana Trapianti d’Organo (SITO) promoted the development of an evidence-based position paper. A 3-step approach has been adopted to develop this position paper. First, SITO appointed a chair and a cochair who then assembled a working group with specific experience of MP in LT. The Guideline Development Group framed the clinical questions into a patient, intervention, control, and outcome (PICO) format, extracted and analyzed the available literature, ranked the quality of th…

Indirect estimation of stomach volume of rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum)

2005

The main hypothesis of this study was that if stomach volume is correlated with food intake it can be estimated without laborious and destructive direct measurement. Rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum), ca. 500^1300 g, were starved for 1, 4, 8 or16 days at151C after which they were fed in excess with dry pellets containing known amounts of X-raydense markers. Immediately after feeding the ¢sh were killed, X rayed and weighed. Then the stomach was dissected, its contents removed and weighed, and stomach volume was measured. X-ray plates were developed and feed intake was estimated based on the amount of marker. All measured variables correlated positively with stomach volume. The be…

Advantage of eradication therapy for Helicobacter pylori before kidney transplantation in uremic patients.

2007

ABSTRACT From January 1999 to February 2007, 61 end-stage renal disease (ESRD) candidates for kidney transplantation underwent an esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGDS) to detect Helicobacter pylori (HP). We correlated treatment for HP before transplantation and upper digestive tract hemorrhagic complications and possible recurrence of peptic disease posttransplantation. The 32 (52.4%) HP-Positive cases were divided into 2 groups: (1) 17 patients who underwent treatment for the eradication of the infection with 40 mg/d omeprazole for 4 weeks, 500 mg claritromycin twice daily for 7 days, and 2 g/d amoxicillin for 7 days; and (2) 15 untreated patients. No significant differences were found in the …

Endoscopic Resection of Early Esophageal and Gastric Neoplasias

2009

The advent of endoscopic resection (ER) techniques has enabled gastroenterologists to remove premalignant or neoplastic lesions throughout the gastrointestinal tract. This review discusses the indications and the several techniques of ER in early carcinomas of the esophagus and stomach. Before ER is performed an accurate evaluation of patients and careful staging of lesions is mandatory. After ER of the neoplasia histological assessment of the entire specimen with detailed histological analysis of layer infiltration is crucial. First long-term follow-up studies of large numbers of patients confirm the excellent effectiveness of ER for well-differentiated mucosal lesions without lymphangitic…

Five-fold Gastrointestinal Electrical Stimulation With Electromyography-based Activity Analysis: Towards Multilocular Theranostic Intestinal Implants

2019

Background/aims Motility disorders are common and may affect the entire gastrointestinal (GI) tract but current treatment is limited. Multilocular sensing of GI electrical activity and variable electrical stimulation (ES) is a promising option. The aim of our study is to investigate the effects of adjustable ES on poststimulatory spike activities in 5 GI segments. Methods Six acute porcine experiments were performed with direct ES by 4 ES parameter sets (30 seconds, 25 mA, 500 microseconds or 1000 microseconds, 30 Hz or 130 Hz) applied through subserosal electrodes in the stomach, duodenum, ileum, jejunum, and colon. Multi-channel electromyography of baseline and post-stimulatory GI electri…

Following Hydrogen Cyanide in the Valencian Country (1907-1933): Risk, Accidents and Standards in Fumigation

2019

Abstract Pests had represented a major problem in agriculture for centuries, but the huge changes in the food chain around the late nineteenth century intensified their effects in a totally unprecedented way and many new chemical substances were introduced in the attempt to control them. In this paper I will focus on the implementation of hydrogen cyanide, a highly toxic pesticide which has not received particular consideration from researchers to date. I shall analyse the introduction of this pesticide in the Valencian Country and focus on the attention given to the safety of workers and consumers. I aim to examine the role of the poison in its different uses and analyse the impact of each…
