A cooperative mobile robot and manipulator system (Co-MRMS) for transport and lay-up of fibre plies in modern composite material manufacture

2021

AbstractComposite materials are widely used in industry due to their light weight and specific performance. Currently, composite manufacturing mainly relies on manual labour and individual skills, especially in transport and lay-up processes, which are time consuming and prone to errors. As part of a preliminary investigation into the feasibility of deploying autonomous robotics for composite manufacturing, this paper presents a case study that investigates a cooperative mobile robot and manipulator system (Co-MRMS) for material transport and composite lay-up, which mainly comprises a mobile robot, a fixed-base manipulator and a machine vision sub-system. In the proposed system, marker-base…

Comprehensive simulation of cooperative robotic system for advanced composite manufacturing : a case study

2021

Composite materials are widely used because of their light weight and high strength properties. They are typically made up of multi-directional layers of high strength fibres, connected by a resin. The manufacturing of composite parts is complex, time-consuming and prone to errors. This work investigates the use of robotics in the field of composite material manufacturing, which has not been well investigated to date (particularly in simulation). Effective autonomous material transportation, accurate localization and limited material deformation during robotic grasping are required for optimum placement and lay-up. In this paper, a simulation of a proposed cooperative robotic system, which …

Analysis of compatibility between lighting devices and descriptive features using Parzen’s kernel: application to flaw inspection by artificial vision

2000

We present a supervised method, developed for industrial inspections by artificial vision, to obtain an adapted combination of descriptive features and a lighting device. This method must be implemented under real-time constraints and therefore a minimal number of features must be selected. The method is based on the assessment of the discrimination power of many descriptive features. The objective is to select the combination of descriptive features and lighting system best able to discriminate flawed classes from defect-free classes. In the first step, probability densities are computed for flawed and defect-free classes and for each tested combination. The discrimination power of the fea…

Recognition and classification of external skin damage in citrus fruits using multispectral data and morphological features

2009

The computer vision systems currently used for the automatic inspection of citrus fruits are normally based on supervised methods that are capable of detecting defects on the surface of the fruit but are unable to discriminate between different types of defects. identifying the type of the defect affecting each fruit is very important in order to optimise the marketing profit and to be able to take measures to prevent such defects from occurring in the future. In this paper, we present a computer vision system that was developed for the recognition and classification of the most common external defects in citrus. in order to discriminate between 11 types of defects, images of the defects we…

Dynamic interface for machine vision systems

2002

Iconic programming intends to provide expressive tools to implement, to debug, and to execute programs. For this purpose, visual languages need pictorial constructs and metaphors to guide the design of algorithms in interactive fashion. In the paper a new class of dynamic visual interfaces, named DIVA (Dynamic Interface for Visual Applications), is introduced, its properties are described, and an application to visual compilers in a multi-processors system dedicated to image analysis is given. Moreover, a formal definition of dynamic icon (DI) is also given.

Hyperspectral system for early detection of rottenness caused by Penicillium digitatum in mandarins

2008

Abstract Nowadays, the detection of fruit infected with Penicillium sp. fungi on packing lines is carried out manually under ultraviolet illumination. Ultraviolet sources induce visible fluorescence of essential oils, present in the skin of citrus and which are released by the action of fungi, thus increasing the contrast between sound and rotten skin. This work analyses a set of techniques aimed at detecting rotten citrus without the use of UV lighting. The techniques used include hyperspectral image acquisition, pre-processing and calibration, feature selection and segmentation using linear and non-linear methods for classification of fruits. Different methods such as correlation analysis…

<title>Compact illuminators, collimators, and focusers with half-sperical input aperture</title>

1994

Inexpensive semi-point light sources completed with integral concentrators of the emitted radiation can find many applications in machine vision systems. Three designs of half- spherical input aperture dielectric concentrators optimized for small spot illumination, collimation, and point-focusing are discussed here. The designs provide conversion of radially emitted light into narrow beam of the desired profile by means of total internal reflection and refraction on specially shaped aspherical surfaces. Analytic expressions describing the surface shapes as well as raytracing results are presented.

Study of the imaging conditions and processing for the aspect control of specular surfaces

2001

A vision system capable of imaging and detecting defects on reflective nonplanar surfaces in the production line at a high cadence is presented in this paper. Defects are typically dust located under the metallic layer of packaging products used in cosmetic industries. To realize this processing, structured lighting which reveals the defects in the image is proposed. Defects appear clearly in the images like a set of brilliant pixels in dark zones. The signature of the defect is then obtained. The size of this signature does not depend linearly on the size of the defect. It is a function of the observation angle. In order to realize a precise and robust process, the necessity of acquiring s…

Application of machine-vision techniques to fish-quality assessment

2012

Abstract Machine vision is a non-destructive, rapid, economic, consistent and objective inspection tool and is also an evaluation technique based on image analysis and processing with a variety of applications. We review the use of machine vision and imaging technologies for fish-quality assessment. This review updates and condenses a representative selection of recent research and industrial solutions proposed in order to evaluate the general trends of machine vision and image processing in the visible range applied for inspection of fish and fish products. In order to determine freshness and composition, it is necessary to measure and to evaluate size and volume, to estimate weight, to me…
