Reports and other PDF Documents
2014
Stata users often need to combine text, tables, and figures. The author's command, lpdf, generates reports and other PDF documents. lpdf compiles text stored in global macros, tables stored as dataset tables or LATEX table input files, and figures stored as Stata graphs or PDF figure files. LATEX must be installed, but familiarity with LATEX is not necessary. lpdf performs every step through Stata and with Stata syntax. It generates documents in report or article style and portrait or landscape orientation. The default author name, document title, and date can be modified. Further format options include the font and margin sizes. For each table and figure, the width and layout can be adapt…
Keynote speakers: Benefits and drawbacks of the BigData era
2017
We have voluntarily surrendered our private data to BigData companies like Google and FaceBook in hope that our data there will be safe and will be used only for ethical machine learning purposes to further advance artificial intelligence capabilities we already use daily: smart search, machine translation, speech recognition, guessing our interests etc. But alongside these positive BigData uses, unexpectedly the world was recently astounded by the success of the DataScience killer-application: microtargeting, discussed in this presentation.
A mobile agent tool for resource discovery
2004
Publisher Summary This chapter discusses a mobile agent based tool for arranging communities whose members want to share computing resources. Such a tool enables community members to arrange their own parallel virtual machine, using resources available within the community. Mobile agents are used to search among available addresses inside the community, and are instructed to select the ones which correspond to the users' requirements. The agent is the key component of the system, because it takes care of the server availability test and of the decision on whether to include them into the virtual machine, according to the user's requirements. The database acts as an intermediary between the …
The Web Computer and Its Operating System: A New Approach for Creating Web Applications
2019
Web applications require not only more sophisticated infrastructure than traditional single-PC applications, but also a different way of thinking, where network-specific aspects have to be considered. In this paper, we introduce the web computer concept, which factors out network-related issues and provides an illusion of a single computer with directly attached CPUs, memory, and I/O devices. By assuming the web computer and its open operating system (webAppOS) as a target platform for web applications, developers can preserve the same level of thinking as when developing classical desktop applications. With this approach, which corresponds to the physiology of the human brain, web applicat…
User-oriented evaluation of mechanical single-channel axial pipettes.
2013
Hand tools should be designed so that they are comfortable to use, fit the hand and are user-oriented. Six different manual, single-channel axial pipettes were evaluated for such objective outcomes as muscular activity, wrist postures and efficiency, as well as for subjective outcomes concerning self-assessed features of pipette usability and musculoskeletal strain. Ten experienced laboratory employees volunteered for the study. The results showed that light and short pipettes with better tool comfort resulted in reduced muscular activity and perceived musculoskeletal strain when they were compared with a long and heavy pipette. There were no differences in the efficiency between the differ…
Writer identification for historical handwritten documents using a single feature extraction method
2020
International audience; With the growth of artificial intelligence techniques the problem of writer identification from historical documents has gained increased interest. It consists on knowing the identity of writers of these documents. This paper introduces our baseline system for writer identification, tested on a large dataset of latin historical manuscripts used in the ICDAR 2019 competition. The proposed system yielded the best results using Scale Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) as a single feature extraction method, without any preprocessing stage. The system was compared against four teams who participated in the competition with different feature extraction methods: SRS-LBP, SI…
Evaluation of shear bond strength of zirconia to composite resin using different adhesive systems
2019
Background To evaluate shear bond strength of zirconia to composite resin using different universal and conventional adhesives and a zirconia primer. Material and methods Forty zirconia blocks were fabricated of zirconium ingots (10×10×5 mm) and sintered at 1530°C for 2 hours. They were then air-abraded with Al2O3 particles. The specimens were divided into 4 groups and subjected to one of the following bonding agents: Futurabond U (group 1), Clearfil Universal Bond, universal adhesives (group 2), Z-Prime Plus, zirconia primer (group 3) and Adper Single Bond 2, conventional adhesive (group 4). Composite resin was then applied in a diameter of 5 mm and in a thickness of 2 mm. All the specimen…
Adaptive Learning Process for the Evolution of Ontology-Described Classification Model in Big Data Context
2016
International audience; One of the biggest challenges in Big Data is to exploit value from large volumes of variable and changing data. For this, one must focus on analyzing the data in these Big Data sources and classify the data items according to a domain model (e.g. an ontology). To automatically classify unstructured text documents according to an ontology, a hierarchical multi-label classification process called Semantic HMC was proposed. This process uses ontologies to describe the classification model. To prevent cold start and user overload, the classification process automatically learns the ontology-described classification model from a very large set of unstructured text documen…
Overlapping community detection versus ground-truth in AMAZON co-purchasing network
2015
International audience; Objective evaluation of community detection algorithms is a strategic issue. Indeed, we need to verify that the communities identified are actually the good ones. Moreover, it is necessary to compare results between two distinct algorithms to determine which is most effective. Classically, validations rely on clustering comparison measures or on quality metrics. Although, various traditional performance measures are used extensively. It appears very clearly that they cannot distinguish community structures with different topological properties. It is therefore necessary to propose an alternative methodology more sensitive to the community structure variations in orde…
