Generalized PWM-VSI Control Algorithm Based on a Universal Duty-Cycle Expression: Theoretical Analysis, Simulation Results, and Experimental Validati…

2007

This paper presents a new approach in realizing various carrier-based pulsewidth-modulation techniques by a generalized control algorithm, which is referred to as the universal control algorithm and is obtained via unequal sharing of null states. The flexibility of such an approach allows one to easily and quickly control two-level inverters. Furthermore, this approach may be also extended with few changes to the control of multilevel inverters. The algorithm that is presented here for two-level voltage-source inverters (VSIs) also obtains efficient detection and management of both the linear and overmodulation ranges. In the overmodulation range, which is treated by using the alpha-beta co…

A Virtual Milling Machine Model to Generate Machine-Monitoring Data for Predictive Analytics

2015

Real data from manufacturing processes are essential to create useful insights for decision-making. However, acquiring real manufacturing data can be expensive and time consuming. To address this issue, we implement a virtual milling machine model to generate machine monitoring data from process plans. MTConnect is used to report the monitoring data. This paper presents (1) the characteristics and specification of milling machine tools, (2) the architecture for implementing the virtual milling machine model, and (3) the integration with a simulation environment for extending to a virtual shop floor model. This paper also includes a case study to explain how to use the virtual milling machin…

Analysis of Energy Efficiency of Different Setups Able to Perform Single Point Incremental Forming (SPIF) Processes

2014

Abstract Production processes, as used for discrete part manufacturing, are responsible for a substantial part of the environmental impact of products, but are still poorly documented in terms of environmental impact. The present paper proposes an energy analysis of single point incremental forming processes (SPIF). The electrical energy consumption of two different setups have been considered and compared. In particular the power demand of one of the most used machine tools architecture able to perform SPIF process, namely a CNC milling machine, has been measured. The obtained results have been compared with the ones obtained for an innovative high speed incremental forming processes perfo…

A comprehensive analysis of electric energy consumption of single point incremental forming processes

2014

Abstract Production processes, as used for discrete part manufacturing, are responsible for a substantial part of the environmental impact of products, but are still poorly documented in terms of environmental impact. The present paper proposes a comprehensive energetic analysis of Single Point Incremental Forming Processes (SPIF). The three most commonly used machine tool architectures able to perform SPIF operations have been taken into account: a CNC milling machine, a six-axes robot as well as the dedicated AMINO machine tool were analyzed from an electrical energy consumption point of view. For all the setups, a working cycle time study and power study were performed. Moreover the cont…

Motion control of medium size CNC machine-tools-A hands-on approach

2012

This paperwork presents an integrated approach based upon simulation and experimental work for reducing the positioning errors of a small to medium size CNC machine-tools. The approach is intended to be used at the shop-floor level and therefore it is based upon a straight-forward model of the feed drive. The model was particularized with specific data from a CNC milling machine and simulation techniques were used to predict the behavior of the system. Only the control parameters of the feed drive which may be altered by the user, without modifying the structure of the CNC controller were taken into consideration and tuned. Simulation results and experimental data gathered before and after …

Soil management effect on soil penetration resistance in the vineyard

2013

In environments characterized by steep slopes or arranged in terraces, among the shallow tillage systems, rototilling is extensively used. However, the effect of the repeated use of rototilling has a considerable influence on soil characteristics; it appears finely powdered, soft and without structure. In order to limit these inconveniences, an innovative self-propelled machine equipped with working tools as a spade, to be used in steep slopes or arranged in terraces areas, was designed by the Mechanics Section of the SAF (Scienze Agrarie e Forestali) Department of the University of Palermo in cooperation with Agrotec company, Padua, Italy. The aim of this study is to compare the effects of…

Improving Maintenance Activities of Machine Tools

2013

The paper follows the current trends in the field of maintenance, proposing approaches that fit in the concept of Total Productive Maintenance (TPM). First it is presented a new proposal for tracking in-service machine tools. This is based on the identification of three operating states: good running condition, state of repair and stationary state. During the stationary state there are differentiated two distinct types of stops: natural stays and unproductive stays (those who often produce considerable losses). Based on the information contained in the records made for tracking the operation of machine tools there are proposed formulas for calculating some operational indicators and practic…

Motion control systems for machine tools - a mechatronic approach by means of simulation

2008

Tuning the control parameters of the feed drives for existing state of the art CNC machine tools, or retrofitting obsolete machine tools requires a close understanding of the position control process. The use of a mathematical model of the feed drive, combined with a computer simulation process is needed in order to fulfill the above mentioned tasks. In this paper some simulation tools for studying the CNC motion control systems are presented. Both single axis positioning regime and biaxial linear and circular interpolation regime were taken into consideration. The main goal of the research was to offer a handson integrated simulation tools compatible and able to use for improving the perfo…

Using the Microcontroller and the PLC in a RPP Robot Control

2012

This paper presents some aspects regarding the possibility of combining microcontroller and programmable logic controller (PLC) for robot control. The RPP robot is designed and manufactured within the Faculty of Engineering from “Lucian Blaga” University of Sibiu, as a patent: BRAŢ TELESCOPIC, Nr. 112418 B1, Int.CI.6 B 25 J 18/02, from 17.02.1997. Classical systems for programming and control of industrial robot are based on numerical control equipment, developed around a PC. Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) haves proven to be viable alternatives to driving machine tools, industrial systems and Robots. Microcontrollers as computers offer advantage due to programmable inputs and outputs …

Pattern recognition in cyclic and discrete skills performance from inertial measurement units

2014

The aim of this study is to compare and validate an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) relative to an optic system, and to propose methods for pattern recognition to capture behavioural dynamics during sport performance. IMU validation was conducted by comparing the motions of the two arms of a compass, which was equipped with IMUs and reflective landmarks detected by a multi-camera system. Spearman’s rank correlation tests showed good correlations between the IMU and multi-camera system, especially when the angles were normalized. Bland-Altman plot, root mean square and the normalized pairwise variability index showed low differences between the two systems, confirming the good accuracy level…
