Optimisation of TA6V alloy surface laser texturing using an experimental design approach

International audience; Active surfaces of plastic injection moulds are nowadays textured using classical techniques (chemical etching or EDM). Replacement of these technologies by a laser technology introduces a big flexibility: absence of mechanical contact with the tool, decrease of the effluent's volume and a big machining precision, even in the case of the complex forms as injection moulds for example. Comparative assessment of surface roughness produced by hard machining with mixed ceramic tools including 2D and 3D analysis

Abstract This paper provides a new comprehensive analysis of part surface finish in continuous dry turning of a hardened construction steel when using mixed alumina cutting tools. Consequently, the surface profiles (2D arragement) and surface microstereometries (3D arragement) generated during different hard part turning operations on a 40H low chromium alloy steel (equivalent to AISI 5140 or DIN 41Cr4), heat treated to the hardness of about 60 HRC, were evaluated. Photoemission electron microscopy (PEEM) has turned out to be one of the most promising methods for surface analysis in the recent years. It is a full field imaging technique based on the emission of secondary electrons by far ultraviolet light or X-rays. This chapter provides comprehensive knowledge regarding tribological behaviour of the cutting zone and characterizes specific features of the tool–chip contact that influence friction mechanisms in this area. Adhesion, plastic deformation of contacting asperities and ploughing action of the cutting edge are selected as three predominant mechanisms controlling sliding friction between the tool and the chip. The phenomena occurring between the electrodes in electric discharge machining when manufacturing features on the micro-metre scale (µ-EDM) is not fully understood. Poor quantitative knowledge of the sources of variability affecting this process hinders the identification of its natural tolerance limits. The effect of wear on the tetragonal-to-monoclinic transformation and the residual stress distribution in zirconia-toughened alumina cutting tools

Abstract Zirconia-toughened alumina cutting tools have been examined after machining an AISI 1040 steel. The Raman spectrum of zirconia and the fluorescence spectrum from alumina have been used to determine the extent of the tetragonal-to-monoclinic (t-m) transformation and the residual stresses in and around the worn-out crater, respectively. Although about 15% vol. m-zirconia is present even in a brand new cutting tool, it was shown that the crater region undergoes the t-m transformation up to 40% vol.
