Time to give a rest to cetuximab in the treatment of advanced non-small cell lung carcinoma?

2018

Chemotherapy with a platinum-based doublet has long been the cornerstone of the treatment for advanced non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) (1). Since the early 2000s, several driver gene mutations and translocations have been discovered, giving rise to the possibilities of targeted therapies (2-4).

Neutrophil activation in severe, early-onset COPD patients versus healthy non-smoker subjects in vitro: effects of antioxidant therapy.

2011

<i>Background:</i> Neutrophils and oxidative stress have been implicated in the pathogenesis of COPD. Severe, early-onset COPD is characterized by a rapid decline in the lung function at an early age; however, nothing is known about neutrophil activation in COPD patients. <i>Objectives:</i> The aim of this study was to evaluate peripheral blood neutrophil activation in severe, early-onset COPD patients versus healthy non-smokers and the effect of N-acetyl-<i>L</i>-cysteine (NAC) on neutrophil activation in vitro. <i>Methods:</i> Neutrophils were isolated from 15 severe, early-onset COPD patients and 15 age-matched healthy subjects and stimulat…

Pseudomembranous invasive tracheobronchial aspergillosis.

2004

Invasive aspergillus tracheobronchitis is a rare infectious complication in severely immunocompromised patients who are generally neutropenic with haematological diseases, AIDS, or after solid organ transplantation. However, a few cases have been reported with no apparent severe compromise in the host defences.1 Aspergillus tracheobronchitis varies from localised tracheobronchitis …

Patterns and diagnostic value of cardiac troponin I vs. troponin T and CKMB after OPCAB surgery.

2001

Cardiac troponin I (cTnI) has been shown to be a specific marker for myocardial injury in cardiac surgery. The object of this prospective study was to determine the patterns and kinetic and diagnostic value of cTnI, cardiac troponin T (cTnT), and creatine kinase MB (CKMB) activity after minimally invasive coronary revascularization using an octopus device on the beating heart (OPCAB).48 patients (33 male/15 female, mean age 68.3 +/- 8.7 years) underwent their first elective OPCAB surgery with median sternotomy without mortality. The mean number of grafts was 2.0 +/- 0.8 per patient. Preoperative mean ejection fraction was 56.6 % +/- 14.9%. CTnI and T levels, total creatine kinase (CK) and C…

Intraoperative cryoablation of atrial fibrillation with the old-fashioned cryode tips: a simple, effective, and inexpensive method.

2006

Nowadays atrial fibrillation is usually treated simultaneously with cardiac procedures, and new cryo-systems have been developed for performing easier and faster intraoperative ablation. However, the old cryode designs can still be useful in surgical practice and represent a more cost-effective method. In this article we present a technique using old-fashioned cryodes for intraoperative treatment of atrial fibrillation and comment on its advantages and limitations.

Tropomyosin: A panallergen that causes a worldwide allergic problem

2021

Background: Panallergens are proteins that take part in key processes of organisms and, therefore, are ubiquitously distributed with highly conserved sequences and structures. One class of these panallergens is composed of the tropomyosins. The highly heat-stable tropomyosins comprise the major allergens in crustaceans and mollusks, which make them important food allergens in exposed populations. Tropomyosins are responsible for a widespread immunoglobulin E cross-reactivity among allergens from different sources. Allergic tropomyosins are expressed in many species, including parasites and insects. Methods: This panallergen class is divided, according to it capacity of induced allergic symp…

Severe eosinophilic asthma: a roadmap to consensus

2017

Asthma is widely accepted as a complex heterogeneous condition with diverse pathophysiological mechanisms, clinical presentations, comorbidities, physiological characteristics, pathology and outcomes that is typically best managed by a multidisciplinary team [1–4]. Severe asthma is recognised as a major unmet need with a high personal and social impact, as well as a high burden on healthcare resources [4]. As a consequence of advances in the development of precision medicines for patients with severe asthma, the need to identify asthma subtypes by phenotype based on clinical, functional or inflammatory parameters is becoming a mandatory part of management [4–6]. Severe eosinophilic asthma (…

Severe asthma features in children: A case–control online survey

2016

Background Very few studies have explored the distinguishing features of severe asthma in childhood in Europe, and only one study was conducted in Southern Europe. The aim of this study was to provide a detailed characterization of children with severe asthma treated in specialized pediatric asthma centers across Italy. Methods We conducted a web-based data collection of family, environmental, clinical and laboratory characteristics of 41 patients aged 6–17 years with severe asthma, defined according to the recent guidelines of the European Respiratory Society and the American Thoracic Society, and 78 age-matched peers with non-severe persistent asthma. The patients have been enrolled from …

Conformational Changes of a Single Semiflexible Macromolecule Near an Adsorbing Surface: A Monte Carlo Simulation

2009

The properties of a single semiflexible chain tethered to a planar surface with a long-ranged attractive potential are studied by means of Monte Carlo simulations. We employ the bond fluctuation lattice model and the Wang-Landau sampling technique. We present the diagram of states for semiflexible chains consisting of N = 64 and 128 monomer units as a function of temperature T and strength of the adsorption potential, epsilon(w), and also compare this with the diagram of states for flexible chains of these two lengths. The diagram of states consists of the regions of a coil, liquid globule, solid isotropic globule, adsorbed coil, and quasi-two-dimensional solid globule with nematic bond ord…
