First description of a metamorphic sole related to ophiolite obduction in the northern Caribbean: Geochemistry and petrology of the Güira de Jauco Am…
2013
Abstract The Guira de Jauco Amphibolite Complex underlies the Mayari–Baracoa Ophiolitic Belt (eastern Cuba) and is composed of highly foliated amphibolite, locally with blocks of sheared serpentinitie that enclose concordant layers of amphibolite. These amphibolites are interpreted as remnants of a sub-ophiolitic metamorphic sole likely formed during late Cretaceous times before the initiation of the collision between the Caribbean and the North American plates. The complex includes common amphibolites (Hbl + Pl ± Ep ± Ttn ± Rt ± Qtz ± Ap), garnet amphibolites (Hbl + Grt + Pl + Ep ± Ttn ± Qtz ± Ap) and clinopyroxene amphibolites (Hbl + Pl + Cpx ± Ep ± Ttn ± Qtz ± Ap). Geochemical data indic…
Mafic alkaline metasomatism in the lithosphere underneath East Serbia: evidence from the study of xenoliths and the host alkali basalts
2010
Effects of mafic alkaline metasomatism have been investigated by a combined study of the East Serbian mantle xenoliths and their host alkaline rocks. Fertile xenoliths and tiny mineral assemblages found in depleted xenoliths have been investigated. Fertile lithologies are represented by clinopyroxene (cpx)-rich lherzolite and spinel (sp)-rich olivine websterite containing Ti-Alrich Cr-augite, Fe-rich olivine, Fe-Al-rich orthopyroxene and Al-rich spinel. Depleted xenoliths, which are the predominant lithology in the suite of East Serbian xenoliths, are harzburgite, cpxpoor lherzolite and rare Mg-rich dunite. They contain small-scale assemblages occurring as pocket-like, symplectitic or irreg…
A late Precambrian (∼ 710 Ma) high volcanicity rift in the southern Eastern Desert of Egypt
1991
The late Precambrian Shadli Metavolcanics of SE Egypt constitute a slightly metamorphosed bimodal sequence that has been previously interpreted as manifesting volcanic activity at an island arc. We report the first Rb-Sr geochronologic, trace element (including REE), and Nd isotopic data for these rocks. Two types of basalt are recognized, the stratigraphically lower suite having compositions like N-MORB ferrobasalt while the overlying basalt is similar to slightly fractionated E-MORB. The two basalt types were derived from melting of a strongly depleted source, most likely within the upper 60–75 km of the upper mantle. The origin of the felsic melts is problematic, and these could either h…
U-Pb zircon and Sm-Nd dating of Moldanubian H P /H T granulites from South ohemia, Czech Republic
1994
Conventional multigrain U-Pb systematics of zircon and single-grain evaporation data of zircons in combination with Nd model ages are presented for pyroxene-free, felsic, garnetiferous granulites and orthopyroxene-bearing granulites of felsic, mafic and intermediate composition from the Blansky Les mountains granulite complex, S Bohemia. Zircons from mafic and intermediate granulites yield Concordia intercept ages between 346 ± 5 and 351 ± 6 Ma as well as a single-grain evaporation age of 346 ± 12 Ma. These ages define the time of Variscan high-grade metamorphism in S Bohemia and are supported by an internal Sm-Nd garnet-zircon-plagioclase-whole rock isochron age of 343 ± 21 Ma. Euhedral zi…
Volatile contents of mafic-to-intermediate magmas at San Cristóbal volcano in Nicaragua
2017
San Cristóbal volcano in northwest Nicaragua is one of the most active basaltic–andesitic stratovolcanoes of the Central American Volcanic Arc (CAVA). Here we provide novel constraints on the volcano's magmatic plumbing system, by presenting the first direct measurements of major volatile contents in mafic-to-intermediate glass inclusions from Holocene and historic-present volcanic activity. Olivine-hosted (forsterite [Fo] < 80; Fo< 80) glass inclusions from Holocene tephra layers contain moderate amounts of H2O (0.1–3.3 wt%) and S and Cl up to 2500 μg/g, and define the mafic (basaltic) endmember component. Historic-present scoriae and tephra layers exhibit more-evolved olivines (Fo69…
Chemistry and mineralogy of outcrops at Meridiani Planum
2005
Analyses of outcrops created by the impact craters Endurance, Fram and Eagle reveal the broad lateral continuity of chemical sediments at the Meridiani Planum exploration site on Mars. Approximately ten mineralogical components are implied in these salt-rich silicic sediments, from measurements by instruments on the Opportunity rover. Compositional trends in an apparently intact vertical stratigraphic sequence at the Karatepe West ingress point at Endurance crater are consistent with non-uniform deposition or with subsequent migration of mobile salt components, dominated by sulfates of magnesium. Striking variations in Cl and enrichments of Br, combined with diversity in sulfate species, pr…
Clockwise, low- metamorphism of the Aus granulite terrain, southern Namibia, during the Mesoproterozoic Namaqua Orogeny
2013
Abstract The Aus granulite terrain forms part of the Mesoproterozoic Namaqua Metamorphic Complex (NMC) of southern Africa. The terrain consists of pre- to syn-tectonic granitoid gneisses containing subordinate aluminous metasediments, metapsammites, mafic granulite and calc-silicate, all of which have been metamorphosed and migmatised to varying degrees. Pseudosection modelling of garnet–sillimanite–cordierite–biotite aluminous metapelitic samples constrain peak metamorphic conditions at 5.5 kbar and 825 ° C. Pseudomorphs of sillimanite after andalusite constrain early prograde conditions of ∼ 550–600 ° C at below 4 kbar, whereas the replacement of sillimanite by garnet–cordierite and sub…
Petrogenetic modelling of strongly residual metapelitic xenoliths within the southern Platreef, Bushveld Complex, South Africa
2010
Xenoliths of quartz-absent Fe-rich aluminous metapelite are common within the platinum group element-rich mafic ⁄ ultramafic magmatic rocks of the Platreef. Relative to well-characterized protoliths, the xenoliths are strongly depleted in K2O and H2O, and have lost a substantial amount of melt (>50 vol.%). Mineral equilibria calculations in the NCKFMASHTO system yield results that are consistent with observations in natural samples. Lower-grade rocks that lack staurolite constrain peak pressures to 2.5 kbar in the southern Platreef. Smaller xenoliths and the margins of larger xenoliths comprise micro-diatexite rich in coarse acicular corundum and spinel, which record evidence for the meta…
Missions to Mars: Characterization of Mars analogue rocks for the International Space Analogue Rockstore (ISAR)
2013
International audience; Instruments for surface missions to extraterrestrial bodies should be cross-calibrated using a common suite of relevant materials. Such work is necessary to improve instrument performance and aids in the interpretation of in-situ measurements. At the CNRS campus in Orléans, the Observatoire des Sciences de l'Univers en région Centre (OSUC) has created a collection of well-characterised rocks and minerals for testing and calibrating instruments to be flown in space missions. The characteristics of the analogue materials are documented in an accompanying online database. In view of the recent and upcoming rover missions to Mars (NASA's 2011 Mars Science Laboratory (MSL…
An anorogenic pulse in a typical orogenic setting: The geochemical and geochronological record in the East Serbian latest Cretaceous to Palaeocene al…
2013
Abstract This study focuses on the East Serbian latest Cretaceous to Palaeocene Mafic Alkaline Rocks (hereafter, ES-MAR). This alkaline magmatism developed along the Eurasian border after the closure of the Mesozoic Tethys in the Balkan sector. Olivine(± clinopyroxene)-phyric and olivine- and nepheline-normative basanite, tephrite and theralite rocks are studied using Ar/Ar ages and major elements, trace elements and Sr–Nd–Pb isotopes. The ES-MAR are geochemically similar to other alkaline rocks of the Circum-Mediterranean Anorogenic Cenozoic Igneous (CiMACI) province, showing elevated contents of high field strength elements (HFSE) (e.g., Nb = 50–100 ppm) and high HFSE/LILE (large ion lith…
