The Role of Order-Disorder Transitions in the Quest for Molecular Multiferroics: Structural and Magnetic Neutron Studies of a Mixed Valence Iron (II)…

2012

Neutron diffraction studies have been carried out to shed light on the unprecedented order-disorder phase transition (ca. 155 K) observed in the mixed-valence iron(II)-iron(III) formate framework compound [NH 2(CH3)2]n[FeIIIFe II(HCOO)6]n. The crystal structure at 220 K was first determined from Laue diffraction data, then a second refinement at 175 K and the crystal structure determination in the low temperature phase at 45 K were done with data from the monochromatic high resolution single crystal diffractometer D19. The 45 K nuclear structure reveals that the phase transition is associated with the order-disorder of the dimethylammonium counterion that is weakly anchored in the cavities …

Quantum magnetism of spin-ladder compounds with trapped-ion crystals

2012

Abstract The quest for experimental platforms that allow for the exploration, and even control, of the interplay of low dimensionality and frustration is a fundamental challenge in several fields of quantum many-body physics, such as quantum magnetism. Here, we propose the use of cold crystals of trapped ions to study a variety of frustrated quantum spin ladders. By optimizing the trap geometry, we show how to tailor the low dimensionality of the models by changing the number of legs of the ladders. Combined with a method for selectively hiding ions provided by laser addressing, it becomes possible to synthesize stripes of both triangular and Kagome lattices. Besides, the degree of frustrat…

Dipolar superferromagnetism in monolayer nanostripes of Fe(110) on vicinal W(110) surfaces

1998

By epitaxial growth of Fe on a vicinal W~110! substrate, densely spaced and continuous monolayer stripes of Fe~110! were prepared, directed along @001#. They exhibit a sharp phase transition to ferromagnetic order, free from relaxations. The magnetic easy axis is in the plane, but along @110# that means across the stripes. This cross magnetization induces ferromagnetic dipolar coupling between the spin blocks in adjacent stripes, which are preformed by exchange interactions. The resulting superferromagnetic phase transition is therefore driven by dipolar interactions. @S0163-1829~98!52002-4#

Novel phase transitions in B-site doped manganites

2005

We have examined the infrared reflectivity and the electrical resistivity of La 1-x [Sr(Ba)] x Mn 1-z [Cu(Zn)] z O 3 samples in ferromagnetic metallic and insulator regime. Several phase transitions are observed, the most obvious being the transition from a ferromagnetic metallic to a ferromagnetic insulator phase that is related to the formation of short-range orbitally ordered domains. The temperature T 1 of the phase transition is dependent on doping concentration and for optimally doped samples (∼32% of Mn 4+ ions) we have found T 1 0.93 T C .

Dielectric properties of Pb(Fe1/2Ta1/2)O3ceramics over 70–300 K temperature range

2011

The studies of dielectric response in ferromagnetic lead ferrotantalate Pb(Fe1/2Ta1/2)O3 are reported over a wide range of temperature under the applied bias field. The features of dielectric nonlinearity deduced from behaviour of reverse e'(E=) curves at different temperatures, including regions of ferroelectric phase transition and vicinity of the Neel point, are examined. Obtained results indicate a substantial broadening of the ferroelectric phase transition. The results are discussed with respect to effects of ferroelectric ordering in relaxor materials of such kind.

Magnetic and structural phase transitions by annealing in tetragonal and cubic Mn3Ga thin films

2021

Abstract Thermal Annealing is a simple and powerful tool to improve the crystallinity in general or promote the functionality for peculiar purposes, ultimately leading to metastable states with lower energy. We report the annealing effect focusing primarily on the structural and magnetic properties of two different Mn3Ga thin films. One is the D022 tetragonal ferrimagnetic phase Mn3Ga, and the other is the disordered-L12 cubic antiferromagnetic phase Mn3Ga. They were grown by RF/DC magnetron sputtering method on MgO substrate. After deposition, the thin films were annealed at various temperatures (200, 300, 400, 500, and 600 °C) and Ar pressures (10−3, 10−1, and 103 Torr). We find that the …

Gradual phase transition from ferromagnetic tetragonal to antiferromagnetic cubic states in Mn Ga (1.80 ≤ x ≤ 3.03) thin films

2019

Abstract The structural, magnetic, and electronic properties of MnxGa thin films are investigated as varying the Mn composition (1.80 ≤ x ≤ 3.03). The variation of x in MnxGa films dramatically changes the crystal structure as well as the magnetic properties. With increasing x, we observe the gradual phase transition from a ferromagnetic tetragonal state to an antiferromagnetic cubic state. The structural characterization reveals that the D022 tetragonal structure of Mn2Ga is slowly transformed to the L12 cubic structure of Mn3Ga. Two phases coexist around x = 2.4. The magnetization is systematically reduced as x increases, ending to an antiferromagnetic state of cubic Mn3Ga, and the electr…

Electronic structure of the austenitic and martensitic state of magnetocaloric Ni-Mn-In Heusler alloy films

2013

Changes of the electronic and magnetic structure near the martensitic phase transition of Ni-Mn-In Heusler alloys doped with Co are investigated by experiment and theory. The nonstoichiometric Ni${}_{48}$Co${}_{5}$Mn${}_{35}$In${}_{12}$ epitaxial film undergoes a transition from a weakly magnetic martensitic phase below ${T}_{m}=350$ K to a ferromagnetic austenitic phase above ${T}_{m}$. Element-specific magnetic moments and the unoccupied density of states function is investigated using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism. We find an antiparallel alignment of Mn and Ni/Co magnetic moments in both phases. The electronic structure is calculated using the SPR-KKR Green's function approach consi…

Magnetotransport Properties of Thin Films of Magnetic Perovskites

2007

In this article we show magnetotransport of two prototypical (nearly) half metallic perowskites La2/3Ca1/3MnO3 and Sr2FeMoO6. In a half metal the spin polarisation at the Fermi energy is complete and tunneling magnetoresistive devices of high sensitivity can be realized with small external magnetic fields. In the vicinity of the metal-insulator phase transition (MIT) temperature of the manganite an external magnetic field can induce ’colossal’ magnetoresistive effects. In the simple perovskites La1-x Ca x MnO3 the charge transport above the MIT is of polaronic nature. Hall-effect measurements on the compound La0.67Ca0.33MnO3 below the MIT show a compensated Fermi-surface consisting of elect…

Anisotropies and magnetic phase transitions in insulating antiferromagnets determined by a Spin-Hall magnetoresistance probe

2019

Antiferromagnets possess a number of intriguing and promising properties for electronic devices, which include a vanishing net magnetic moment and thus insensitivity to large magnetic fields and characteristic terahertz frequency dynamics. However, probing the antiferromagnetic ordering is challenging without synchrotron-based facilities. Here, we determine the material parameters of the insulating iron oxide hematite, α-Fe2O3, using the surface sensitive spin-Hall magnetoresistance (SMR). Combined with a simple analytical model, we extract the antiferromagnetic anisotropies and the bulk Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya field over a wide range of temperatures and magnetic fields. Across the Morin phas…
