Polyoxometalates: From Magnetic Models to Multifunctional Materials

In this article we have presented some recent achievements of the polyoxometalates in the fields of molecular magnetism and functional molecular materials. In the context of the molecular magnetism we have shown that POMs provide ideal examples of magnetic clusters with coexisting ferro and antiferromagnetic exchange interactions which can be investigated using a variety of magnetic techniques, including the Inelastic Neutron Scattering spectroscopy, to get a thorough characterization of the magnetic levels in these large clusters, and to test the validity of the spin hamiltonians commonly used in magnetism.

Conventional magnetic order in a material requires the partially filled d or f bands. The exchange interactions between the electrons in these partially filled bands give rise to a magnetic order. However, the discovery of unexpected magnetism observed in some nanomaterials, which have the d and f shells either completely empty or full, has challenged our understanding of magnetism in conventional materials. The magnetism in nanomaterials shows the effects of reduced dimensions, reduced coordination of atoms at the surface and some quantum effects which dominate at low dimensions. Ab initio Hartree-Fock calculations of LaMnO3 (110) surfaces

We present the results of ab initio Hartree-Fock calculations of the LaMnO3 (110) surface. Using seven-plane slabs, periodic in 2D and containing three formula units, we compare the properties of a stoichiometric surface with oxygen vacancies, and non-stoichiometric, defect-free surfaces, analyze the dispersion of the effective charges near the surface, and calculate the surface energy before and after relaxation, for both ferromagnetric and antiferromagnetic spin orderings in a slab. q 2003 Elsevier Ltd. Pressure induced increase in Tc for the organic-based magnet FeII(TCNE)2 (TCNE=tetracyanoethylene)

Abstract Pressure dependent magnetization and 57Fe Mossbauer studies were performed on Fe(TCNE)[C4(CN)8]1/2·zCH2Cl2 (TCNE = tetracyanoethylene). Pressure did not influence the Mossbauer parameters in paramagnetic state. Mossbauer data reveals the onset of magnetic ordering at 130 K and significant enhancement of the magnetic ordering temperature from 100 to 150 K accompanied by an increase of the spontaneous magnetization, which is higher than reported from the magnetic data, and application of pressure induces the reversible formation of a new, metastable magnetic species. Magnetic and Electronic Properties ofRENiBi (RE = Pr, Sm, Gd-Tm, Lu) Compounds

Resistivity and magnetic measurements were used to examine the ternary rare earth compounds RENiBi (RE = Pr, Sm, Gd-Tm, Lu). These compounds order antiferromagnetically with TN below 16 K (RE = Pr, Sm, Gd-Tm) or are paramagnetic (LuNiBi). For some of these compounds a metal–insulator transition was found. The metal–insulator transition temperature depends strongly on the preparation conditions. Both the magnetic ground states and the resistance behavior are in good agreement with electronic band structure calculations.
Spin transition in [Fe(phen)2(NCS)2] - �SR study

The reversible thermal spin transition which occurs in [Fe(phen)(2)(NCS)(2)] around T-1/2 similar to 177 K has been investigated by muon spin relaxation (muSR) (similar to10-280 K). The depolarisation curves are well described by two Lorentzian lines represent fast and slow components in the decay curves, with the initial asymmetry parameter of the fast component found to track the spin transition in [Fe(phen)2(NCS),]. Comparison of zero-field and transverse field (20 Oe) muSR measurements shows that diamagnetic muonic species occur over the entire temperature range.

In this article, we present a theoretical microscopic approach to describe the magnetic and spectroscopic behavior of multifunctional hybrid materials which demonstrate spin crossover and ferromagnetic ordering. The low-spin to high-spin transition is considered as a cooperative phenomenon that is driven by the interaction of the electronic shells of the Fe ions with the full symmetric deformation of the local surrounding that is extended over the crystal lattice via the acoustic phonon field. The proposed model is applied to the analysis of the series [Fe(III)(sal2-trien)] [Mn(II)Cr(III)(ox)3]·solv, in short 1·solv, where solv = CH2Cl2, CH2Br2, and CHBr3.
Crystal field effects and magnetic properties of Dy2Te3

Abstract Magnetic susceptibility and magnetization measurements are presented for Dy 2 Te 3 . By means of crystal field calculations the energy levels of ground state and crystal field potentials for Dy 3+ ions have been evaluated taking the exchange interactions into account.

The exchange mechanism and magnetic structure of the organic-inorganic layered molecule-based magnet [Co2(bta)]n (1) (H 4bta =1,2,4,5-benzenetetracarboxylic acid) have been investigated through variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements and supported with a series of neutron diffraction experiments. Cryomagnetic studies have shown an antiferromagnetic ordering at a transition temperature of 16 K that is followed by the appearance of a weak ferromagnetism below 11 K. The weak antiferromagnetic interlayer interaction plays an important role in this system in spite of the long interlayer separation.
