Suppression of capillary wave broadening of interfaces in binary alloys due to elastic interactions.

By Monte Carlo simulations in the constant-temperature--constant-pressure ensemble a planar interface between unmixed A-rich and B-rich phases of a binary (A, B) alloy on a compressible diamond lattice is studied. No significant capillary wave broadening of the concentration profile across the interface is observed, unlike lattice models of incompressible mixtures and fluids. The distortion of the lattice structure across the interface is studied.
Short range charge/orbital ordering in La1−xSrxMn1−zBzO3 (B = Cu,Zn) manganites

We have measured the reflectivity spectra of La1−x SrxMn1−zBzO3 (B = Cu, Zn; 0.17 x 0.30; 0 z 0.10) manganites over wide frequency (100–4000 cm −1 )a nd temperature (80–300 K) ranges. Besides the previously observed infrared active modes or mode pairs at about 160 cm −1 (external mode), 350 cm −1 (bond bending mode) and 590 cm −1 (bond stretching mode), we have clearly observed two additional phonon modes at about 645 and 720 cm −1 below the temperature T1 (T1 < TC), which coincides with the phase transition temperature when the system transforms from ferromagnetic metallic into a ferromagnetic insulator state. Small clusters with Heisenberg antiferromagnetic exchange

We study small symmetrical clusters of magnetic ions with Heisenberg antiferromagnetic exchange interaction. We calculate the magnetization and the specific heat as functions of applied magnetic field at zero and non-zero temperature. Results are given for both classical and quantum systems. At zero temperature the classical systems undergo a series of transitions where the symmetry changes as a function of applied field. The quantum systems show similar features to Ising systems previously studied.
Magnetic and magnetoelastic properties of epitaxial (2 1 1)-oriented RFe2 (R=Dy, Tb) thin films

Abstract Epitaxial, (2 1 1)-oriented thin films of RFe 2 (R: rare earth; here: Dy, Tb) were deposited by molecular beam epitaxy on faceted and non-faceted α - Al 2 O 3 ( 1 0 1 ¯ 0 ) (m-plane) substrates utilizing a 15 A thin Fe seed layer and a 500 A Nb buffer layer. Detailed X-ray diffraction analyses revealed a twin-free epitaxial (2 1 1)-oriented growth of buffer layer and film. The magnetostrictive layer RFe 2 , as well as the template layers Nb and Mo exhibited the same crystallographic in-plane orientation with regard to the substrate. Two novel Re(IV) compounds of formula [H2cip][Hcip][ReCl6]Cl·H2O (1) and [Hcip]2[ReBr6] (2) [(H2cip)2+/(Hcip)+ = ciprofloxacindiium cation / ciprofloxacinium cation] have been synthesized and studied structurally and magnetically. 1 crystallizes in the monoclinic system with space group P21/c, whereas 2 crystallizes in the orthorhombic system with space group Pbca. 1 and 2 are hexahalorhenate(IV) salts obtained with the protonated ciprofloxacin antibiotic. Magnetic properties and61Ni Mössbauer spectroscopy of the ternary phosphide CrNiP

The results of x-ray diffraction, dc magnetization, and 61Ni Mossbauer spectroscopy studies of the ternary phosphide CrNiP are reported. This compound crystallizes in the orthorhombic Co2P-type structure (space group Pnma) with the lattice parameters a = 5.7965(1) A, b = 3.5337(1) A, and c = 6.8123(2) A. NiCrP is a ferromagnet with Curie temperature TC = 135.1(1) K. The ferromagnetic-to-paramagnetic transition is characterized by the critical exponents β = 0.355(22), γ = 1.241(18), and δ = 4.585(20). Their values are close to those of a 3D Heisenberg ferromagnet. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility above TC follows the modified Curie–Weiss law with a paramagnetic Curie…

Within the huge family of Heusler compounds only a few quaternary derivatives are known that crystallize in the F43m space group. In this work, the yet unreported compounds CoRhMnZ (Z = Ga, Sn, Sb) and the alloy Co(0.5)Rh(1.5)MnSb were investigated in detail by experimental techniques and theoretical methods. The ab initio calculations predict the CoRhMnZ compounds to be half-metallic ferromagnets or to be close to the half-metallic ferromagnetic state. Calculations of the elastic constants show that the cubic structure is stable in compounds containing Mn. Both calculations and experiment reveal that Mn cannot be exchanged by Fe (CoRhFeGa). Low-Cost Solution for Magnetic Field Mapping Device

Distribution of magnetic field around different magnetic objects is important for various applications of magnetic materials. Field distribution can be measured with a 3-axis Hall probe sensor, which is moved around the sample. There are excellent systems available in market for this purpose for example, magnetic field mapper MMS-1A-RS from SENIS AG. However, these systems are quite expensive, starting from 25000=C. Here we demonstrate how a simple automated magnetic field mapper can be made from common parts found in laboratories, test it to verify accuracy, compare results with numerical simulations and discuss the benefits of this low-cost alternative.
