Analytical description of solid particles kinematics due to a fluid flow and application to the depiction of characteristic kinematics in cold sprayi…

2017

Abstract In several multiphase flow applications such as fluidization, thermal spraying, atomization manufacturing and so on, the Newton's law is widely enacted to formulate the particle/fluid kinematic interaction and then to compute particles kinematics. This paper provides analytical solutions of the Newton's law in its time-dependent formulation or simplified formulation, the latter being a reduction of the time dependent problem into a spatial description of the particle motion. It was found that the velocity solution is strictly similar in both cases so that the simplified formulation is viable. The W_ 1 branch of the Lambert's function yields the analytical particle residence time an…

Timing of the accreting millisecond pulsar IGR J17591-2342: evidence of spin-down during accretion

2020

We report on the phase-coherent timing analysis of the accreting millisecond X-ray pulsar IGR J17591-2342, using Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) data taken during the outburst of the source between 2018 August 15 and 2018 October 17. We obtain an updated orbital solution of the binary system. We investigate the evolution of the neutron star spin frequency during the outburst, reporting a refined estimate of the spin frequency and the first estimate of the spin frequency derivative ($\dot{\nu} \sim -7\times 10^{-14}$ Hz s$^{-1}$), confirmed independently from the modelling of the fundamental frequency and its first harmonic. We further investigate the evolution of the X-ra…

Activity from the Be/X-ray binary system V0332+53 during its intermediate-luminosity outburst in 2008

2015

Aims: We present a study of the Be/X-ray binary system V 0332+53 with the main goal of characterizing its behavior mainly during the intermediate-luminosity X-ray event on 2008. In addition, we aim to contribute to the understanding of the global behavior of the donor companion by including optical data from our dedicated campaign starting on 2006. Methods: V 0332+53 was observed by RXTE and Swift during the decay of the intermediate-luminosity X-ray outburst of 2008, as well as with Suzaku before the rising of the third normal outburst of the 2010 series. In addition, we present recent data from the Spanish ground-based astronomical observatories of El Teide (Tenerife), Roque de los Muchac…

A quantitative assessment of the effect of distributor type on particle circulation

1997

Abstract Garncarek's quantitative index of inhomogeneity has been used to compare the effect of distributor type on the degree of uniformity of solids mixing in a gas-fluidized bed assessed by following a tracer particle using the technique of Positron Emission Particle Tracking. The bed was a sand of 475 μm diameter fluidized at 2 U mf and contained within a column of 150 mm diameter. A porous and perforated plate distributor are compared. The index shows that tracer locations are generally more homogeneously distributed throughout the vertical section of the bed with the porous plate distributor. Behaviour varies with height and horizontal sections of the bed show that there is little dif…

Unusually high frequency natural VLF radio emissions observed during daytime in Northern Finland

2016

Geomagnetic field variations and electromagnetic waves of different frequencies are ever present in the Earth's environment in which the Earth's fauna and flora have evolved and live. These waves are a very useful tool for studying and exploring the physics of plasma processes occurring in the magnetosphere and ionosphere. Here we present ground-based observations of natural electromagnetic emissions of magnetospheric origin at very low frequency (VLF, 3–30 kHz), which are neither heard nor seen in their spectrograms because they are hidden by strong impulsive signals (sferics) originating in lightning discharges. After filtering out the sferics, peculiar emissions are revealed in these dig…

Single particle motion in a Penning trap: description in the classical canonical formalism

1992

This paper aims at the development of methods for the calculation of the characteristic frequencies of a Penning trap, taking into account deviations of the actual geometry from the ideal one, anharmonicities of the electric potential, misalignments and inhomogeneities of the magnetic field, additional time dependent electromagnetic fields, and so on. The paper starts by describing the motion of a single charged particle in an ideal hyperbolic Penning trap using the formalism of classical hamiltonian mechanics. The usefulness of rotating coordinates is pointed out, and the importance of conservation of canonical angular momentum is stressed. After transformation to action-angle variables th…

Qualitative remarks on some non-linear aspects of the radio-pulsar magnetosphere

2011

In the class of the submodels SCLF (space-charge limited flow) of the family of "gap-plus-PPF" models, let us exposes some qualitative remarks on the possible turbulent dynamics showed by the zone (II) (see Fig. 1 of the text) of the acceleration zone of the "direct inner gap". Furthermore, we will discuss some consequent physical implications (as, for instance, self-focussing phenomena, Petviashvili's diamagnetism, and so on) concerning structure and physical phenomenology of the remaining subzones (above the subzone (II)) of the given acceleration zone, in connection with possible models for the external solid crust of the radio-pulsar.

Crust-magnetosphere coupling during magnetar evolution and implications for the surface temperature

2018

We study the coupling of the force-free magnetosphere to the long-term internal evolution of a magnetar. We allow the relation between the poloidal and toroidal stream functions - that characterizes the magnetosphere - to evolve freely without constraining its particular form. We find that, on time-scales of the order of kyr, the energy stored in the magnetosphere gradually increases, as the toroidal region grows and the field lines expand outwards. This continues until a critical point is reached beyond which force-free solutions for the magnetosphere can no longer be constructed, likely leading to some large-scale magnetospheric reorganization. The energy budget available for such events …

Long-term evolution of the force-free twisted magnetosphere of a magnetar

2017

We study the long-term quasi-steady evolution of the force-free magnetosphere of a magnetar coupled to its internal magnetic field. We find that magnetospheric currents can be maintained on long timescales of the order of thousands of years. Meanwhile, the energy, helicity and twist stored in the magnetosphere all gradually increase over the course of this evolution, until a critical point is reached, beyond which a force-free magnetosphere cannot be constructed. At this point, some large-scale magnetospheric rearrangement, possibly resulting in an outburst or a flare, must occur, releasing a large fraction of the stored energy, helicity and twist. After that, the quasi-steady evolution sho…
