Determination of the origin and magnitude of logarithmic finite-size effects on interfacial tension: Role of interfacial fluctuations and domain brea…

2014

The ensemble-switch method for computing wall excess free energies of condensed matter is extended to estimate the interface free energies between coexisting phases very accurately. By this method, system geometries with linear dimensions $L$ parallel and $L_z$ perpendicular to the interface with various boundary conditions in the canonical or grandcanonical ensemble can be studied. Using two- and three-dimensional Ising models, the nature of the occurring logarithmic finite size corrections is studied. It is found crucial to include interfacial fluctuations due to "domain breathing".

Transmission Microscopy with Nanometer Resolution Using a Deterministic Single Ion Source.

2015

We realize a single particle microscope by using deterministically extracted laser-cooled ^{40}Ca^{+} ions from a Paul trap as probe particles for transmission imaging. We demonstrate focusing of the ions to a spot size of 5.8±1.0  nm and a minimum two-sample deviation of the beam position of 1.5 nm in the focal plane. The deterministic source, even when used in combination with an imperfect detector, gives rise to a fivefold increase in the signal-to-noise ratio as compared with conventional Poissonian sources. Gating of the detector signal by the extraction event suppresses dark counts by 6 orders of magnitude. We implement a Bayes experimental design approach to microscopy in order to ma…

Pre-main sequence stars older than 8 Myr in the Eagle Nebula

2013

Attention is given to a population of 110 stars in the NGC 6611 cluster of the Eagle Nebula that have prominent near-infrared (NIR) excess and optical colours typical of pre-main sequence (PMS) stars older than 8 Myr. At least half of those for which spectroscopy exists have a Halpha emission line profile revealing active accretion. In principle, the V-I colours of all these stars would be consistent with those of young PMS objects (< 1 Myr) whose radiation is heavily obscured by a circumstellar disc seen at high inclination and in small part scattered towards the observer by the back side of the disc. However, using theoretical models it is shown here that objects of this type can only …

LONG TIME DYNAMICS OF MODULATED WAVES IN A NONLINEAR DISCRETE LC TRANSMISSION LINE

2003

The long-time dynamics of modulated waves in a nonlinear LC transmission line is investigated. Considering the higher-order nonlinear Schrodinger equation, we define analytically the conditions leading to the instability of modulated waves. We show that two kinds of instabilities may develop in the network depending on the frequency range of the chosen carrier wave and on the magnitude of its initial amplitude, which is confirmed by our numerical simulations. The nonreproducibility of numerical experiments on modulated waves is also considered.

Journal of High Energy Physics

2015

In this article we consider the presence of neutrino non-standard interactions (NSI) in the production and detection processes of reactor antineutrinos at the Daya Bay experiment. We report for the first time, the new constraints on the flavor non-universal and flavor universal charged-current NSI parameters, estimated using the currently released 621 days of Daya Bay data. New limits are placed assuming that the new physics effects are just inverse of each other in the production and detection processes. With this special choice of the NSI parameters, we observe a shift in the oscillation amplitude without distorting the $L/E$ pattern of the oscillation probability. This shift in the depth…

Two-photon exchange on the neutron and the hyperfine splitting

2018

We calculate the contribution from the two-photon exchange on the neutron to the hyperfine splitting of S energy levels. We update the value of the neutron Zemach radius, estimate total recoil and polarizability corrections. The resulting two-photon exchange in electronic atoms exceeds by an order of magnitude the leading Zemach term and has different sign both in electronic and muonic hydrogen.

Theoretical interpretation of the Ds+→π+π0η decay and the nature of a0(980)

2020

Abstract In a recent paper [1] , the BESIII Collaboration reported the so-called first observation of pure W-annihilation decays D s + → a 0 + ( 980 ) π 0 and D s + → a 0 0 ( 980 ) π + . The measured absolute branching fractions are, however, puzzlingly larger than those of other measured pure W-annihilation decays by at least one order of magnitude. In addition, the relative phase between the two decay modes is found to be about 180 degrees. In this letter, we show that all these can be easily understood if the a 0 ( 980 ) is a dynamically generated state from K ¯ K and πη interactions in coupled channels. In such a scenario, the D s + decay proceeds via internal W emission instead of W-an…

enhancement and the Glashow-Schnitzer-Weinberg sum rule

2000

Abstract In 1967 Glashow, Schnitzer and Weinberg derived a sum rule in the soft-pion and soft kaon limit relating the ΔI= 1 2 non-leptonic K→2π amplitude to integrals over strange and non-strange spectral functions. Using the recent ALEPH data from τ-decay, we show that the sum rule, slightly modified to reduce contributions near the cut, yields the correct magnitude decay amplitude corresponding to the ΔI= 1 2 rule.

Microscopic description of α-like resonances

2000

A description of $\ensuremath{\alpha}$-like resonances is given in terms of single-particle states including narrow Gamow resonances in continuum. The equations of motion are derived within the multistep shell-model approach; the lowest collective two-particle eigenmodes are used as building blocks for the four-particle states. A good agreement with the low-lying states in ${}^{212}\mathrm{Po}$ is obtained. A new technique to estimate the $\ensuremath{\alpha}$-particle formation amplitude for any multipolarity is proposed. The spectroscopic factor of the $\ensuremath{\alpha}$-decay between ground states is reproduced, but the total width is by two orders of magnitude less than the experimen…

Towards electronic g-factor measurements in medium-heavy hydrogen-like and lithium-like ions

2005

Abstract Measurements of the anomalous magnetic moment of the electron bound in hydrogen-like ions with spinless nuclei have proven to be highly sensitive tests of corresponding calculations based on bound-state quantum electrodynamics. Measurements performed on H-like carbon 12C5+ and oxygen 16O7+ together with bound-state QED calculations on the same level of accuracy have achieved sensitivities around 0.25% of the QED bound state contributions to the calculated electronic g-factors of these ions. Currently, a similar experiment on hydrogen-like calcium 40Ca19+, lithium-like calcium 40Ca17+ and other medium-heavy ions is being prepared, which is capable of increasing this sensitivity on t…
