Frequency-domain experimental setup for mechatronic and suspension system components

2021

This paper presents a frequency-domain experimental setup for modal analysis of mechatronic and suspension system components. Design, instrumentation and dynamic behavior of the one degree-of-freedom (DOF) system, capable of providing both, periodic and application-specific, excitation forces is described. The excitation is realized by an electromagnetic modal shaker with additional assembly and interface components designed and instrumented for frequency -domain analysis of vertical dynamics. Frequency response functions (FRFs) of the implemented system are experimentally measured and the associated basic model parameters are calculated, correspondingly identified. Accurate fit between the…

Human Systems Design: Towards an Integrative Conceptual Framework

2020

International audience; Conceiving artefacts and tools is one of the major key characteristics of the human species. Since the beginning of automation and even more since the spreading of computer science, this activity has become more and more challenging especially through the analysis of the different interaction modes between the artifacts and the human. Nowadays, developing an artifact that must interact with a human is requiring an integrative point of view which must include biological, physical and cybernetical concerns. The current norms aimed at characterizing the quality and the relevance of human machine interface are generally limited to standard interfaces and/or to specific d…

A naïve way of looking at fuzzy sets

2016

In this study, we consider the concept of a predicate (P) in a universe of discourse X from a specific viewpoint, i.e., the informational viewpoint with respect to its linguistic use. Its meaning and its different types are considered, particularly by considering the predicates that are "measurable" and designate a "collective" (P) in X, which is not always a classical subset of X. We show that the collective P manifests itself in different "states" or fuzzy sets, where knowledge and representation depend on the available information regarding the use of the predicate P in X. We also analyze the linguistic concept of a "collective" where the fuzzy sets are nothing other than informational s…

A comparative assessment of energy demand and life cycle costs for additive- and subtractive-based manufacturing approaches

2020

Abstract The applicability domain of Additive Manufacturing (AM) processes, apart from technological and quality results, relies on environmental and cost performance. These aspects still need to be better understood. To this aim, comparative analyses with conventional manufacturing routes are needed. In this paper, empirical cost and energy requirement models are suggested to assess subtractive- (machining) and additive- (Electron Beam Melting) based manufacturing approaches for the production of Ti-6Al-4V components. A life-cycle perspective is adopted, and all the steps from the input material production to the post-AM processing operations and the use phase are included. The analyses ha…

Multi-band identification for enhancing bearing fault detection in variable speed conditions

2020

Abstract Rolling element bearings are crucial components in rotating machinery, and avoiding unexpected breakdowns using fault detection methods is an increased demand in industry today. Variable speed conditions render a challenge for vibration-based fault diagnosis due to the non-stationary impact frequency. Computed order tracking transforms the vibration signal from time domain to the shaft-angle domain, allowing order analysis with the envelope spectrum. To enhance fault detection, the bearing resonance frequency region is isolated in the raw signal prior to order tracking. Identification of this region is not trivial but may be estimated using kurtosis-based methods reported in the li…

Buckling and post-buckling analysis of cracked stiffened panels via an X-Ritz method

2019

Abstract A multi-domain eXtended Ritz formulation, called X-Ritz, for the analysis of buckling and post-buckling of stiffened panels with cracks is presented. The theoretical framework is based on the First-order Shear Deformation Theory and accounts for von Karman's geometric nonlinearities. The structure is modeled as assembly of plate elements. Penalty techniques are used to fulfill the continuity condition along the edges of contiguous elements and to satisfy essential boundary conditions requirements. The use of an extended set of approximating functions allows to model through-the-thickness cracks and to capture the crack opening and tip singular fields as well as the structural behav…

Model-based Engineering for the Integration of Manufacturing Systems with Advanced Analytics

2016

To employ data analytics effectively and efficiently on manufacturing systems, engineers and data scientists need to collaborate closely to bring their domain knowledge together. In this paper, we introduce a domain-specific modeling approach to integrate a manufacturing system model with advanced analytics, in particular neural networks, to model predictions. Our approach combines a set of meta-models and transformation rules based on the domain knowledge of manufacturing engineers and data scientists. Our approach uses a model of a manufacturing process and its associated data as inputs, and generates a trained neural network model as an output to predict a quantity of interest. This pape…

A Comprehensive Survey of Indoor Localization Methods Based on Computer Vision

2020

Computer vision based indoor localization methods use either an infrastructure of static cameras to track mobile entities (e.g., people, robots) or cameras attached to the mobile entities. Methods in the first category employ object tracking, while the others map images from mobile cameras with images acquired during a configuration stage or extracted from 3D reconstructed models of the space. This paper offers an overview of the computer vision based indoor localization domain, presenting application areas, commercial tools, existing benchmarks, and other reviews. It provides a survey of indoor localization research solutions, proposing a new classification based on the configuration stage…

Design of a robust controller for DC/DC converter–electrolyzer systems supplied by μWECSs subject to highly fluctuating wind speed

2020

Abstract A buck-based, isolated, high-voltage-ratio DC/DC converter that allows supplying a proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer from a micro-wind energy conversion system ( μ WECS) has been recently presented. It exhibits low ripple at the switching frequency on the output voltage and current and represents an attractive solution for low-cost hydrogen production. In this paper, a more accurate mathematical model of such a converter is derived and discussed. Then, a model-based robust controller is designed in the frequency domain using the Internal Model Control structure and in the context of H 2 ∕ H ∞ optimal control. The controller satisfies the condition of robust stability and …

Interoperable real-time symbolic programming for smart environments

2019

Smart environments demand novel paradigms offering easy configuration, programming and deployment of pervasive applications. To this purpose, different solutions have been proposed ranging from visual paradigms based on mashups to formal languages. However, most of the paradigms proposed in the literature require further external tools to turn application description code into an executable program before the deployment on target devices. Source code generation, runtime upgrades and recovery, and online debugging and inspection are often cumbersome in these programming environments. In this work we describe a methodology for real-time and on-line programming in smart environments that is co…
