Antioxidant defense parameters as predictive biomarkers for fermentative capacity of active dried wine yeast.
2014
The production of active dried yeast (ADY) is a common practice in industry for the maintenance of yeast starters and as a means of long term storage. The process, however, causes multiple cell injuries, with oxidative damage being one of the most important stresses. Consequentially, dehydration tolerance is a highly appreciated property in yeast for ADY production. In this study we analyzed the cellular redox environment in three Saccharomyces cerevisiae wine strains, which show markedly different fermentative capacities after dehydration. To measure/quantify the effect of dehydration on the S. cerevisiae strains, we used: (i) fluorescent probes; (ii) antioxidant enzyme activities; (ii) in…
Application of multi-criteria decision making to PMISs assessment
2014
This paper builds on a previous study concerning the assessment and ranking of Project Management Information Systems (PMISs) features and the comparison of a PMISs software sample. In such an application a Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) tool such as the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) was adopted to get the ranking by neglecting the mutual influence of elements within the structure. The present paper aims at taking into account such influences by relying on the Analytic Network Process (ANP) for the assessment and ranking of features, while the PMISs software assessment has been performed through the AHP via the direct assessment.
Identifying the Unknown Content of an Ancient Egyptian Sealed Alabaster Vase from Kha and Merit’s Tomb Using Multiple Techniques and Multicomponent S…
2020
This article highlights the multianalytical study of exuded liquid from an ancient Egyptian sealed alabaster vase by Master's students in an applied chemistry for cultural heritage course. Master students are introduced to the field of Archaeometry that see the collaboration of experts in different areas of research such as conservators, curators of museums, physicists, chemists, etc. The sample is a residue exuded on the linen strip sealing an ancient Egyptian alabaster vase (inventory number S.8448) from the collection of the Museo Egizio in Turin (Italy). The students start to plan the noninvasive investigation by X-ray fluorescence (XRF), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and ener…

Mythical Creatures, the Making of Wearing Apparel, and the Landscape
2011
Stones where mythical creatures carry out work connected with wearing apparel appear in publications on the mythological stones of Lithuania and Belarus. This theme is not so widely considered in Latvian research literature. The aim of this work is to show that in Latvian folklore, by natural (stone, tree, stump, water, cave, etc) and man-made objects of the cultural space (threshing barn, cemetery, hill-fort, etc), mythical creatures tailor, spin, knit and mend for people or for themselves. Insegnare architettura-fare architettura è il carattere che Vincenzo Melluso riconosce alla Scuola di Palermo e che da anni lui stesso porta avanti. Una didattica del progetto che parte dalla lettura del grande libro del paesaggio abitato e dalle sue mutazioni, per contaminarsi poi in altre discipline e diventare infine forma architettonica Teaching architecture and making architecture is a trait of the Palermo School, says Vincenzo Melluso, who has been putting it into practice for years by first having students peruse the big book of the inhabited landscape and its mutations, then intersecting the discipline with other ones, and finally asking them to create architectural form
Argumentative reasoning and taxonomic analysis for the identification of medical errors
2015
Telemedicine consists of the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in the practice of medicine. The massive digitalisation of the society is changing the behaviour of ordinary people even in medical sectors. The impact of digitisation is also having impacts on teleexpertise, where a medical professional can remotely ask some advices through the use of ICTs to provide treatment to a patient in critical conditions in remote environment. However, sometimes the outcome of such advice obtained remotely can lead to medical errors. In these situations, it is important to determine whether the causes of the errors could have been avoidable or not for the purposes of establishing …
Development of artificial neural network for condition assessment of bridges based on hybrid decision making method – Feasibility study
2021
Abstract Managing a bridge at an appropriate level of reliability requires knowledge of its technical condition, which is decisive in terms of maintenance and repair activities. This is a multi-criteria decision-making problem which results from the need to allocate limited financial resources to this work. Although many calculation models have been suggested in published sources, none of them has ever met these requirements. The algorithm presented by the authors allows for the assessment of any number of bridges, taking into account the diversity of solutions in terms of materials and structures, and can provide a solution to this problem. This hybrid calculation model, combining the modi…
Emergency medical triage decisions are swayed by computer-manipulated cues of physical dominance in caller’s voice
2016
AbstractIn humans as well as other animals, displays of body strength such as power postures or deep masculine voices are associated with prevalence in conflicts of interest and facilitated access to resources. We conduct here an ecological and highly critical test of this hypothesis in a domain that, on first thought, would appear to be shielded from such influences: access to emergency medical care. Using acoustic manipulations of vocal masculinity, we systematically varied the perceived level of physical dominance of mock patients calling a medical call center simulator. Callers whose voice were perceived as indicative of physical dominance (i.e. those with low fundamental and formant fr…
