Toward Value Co-Creation: Increasing Women’s Presence in Management Positions through Competition against a Set Target
2017
Despite empirical evidence that women’s presence in management positions is a source of value co-creation for firms, these positions are still male-dominated. Some evidence from experimental economics suggests that one reason for this imbalance is that women shy away from competition. However, most of these studies have focused on competition systems that pit individuals against each other. We present an economic laboratory experiment that compares competition against others with competition against a set target. The crucial difference is that whereas the former involves competing against opponents, the latter does not. Our results show that significantly more women are willing to compete a…
Beyond economic and financial analyses : A revelatory study of IT security investment decision-making process
2022
Information Technology (IT) security breaches and the extent of damage they may cause to an organization are inherently uncertain. Therefore, managers’ decisions about whether to make IT security investment (ITSI) and how much, depend upon a subjective assessment of the economic value of the investment and the likelihood of the damage to the organization. When managers delay or fail to decide on whether and how much to invest in IT security, it can make organizations vulnerable to operational and strategic perils. Based upon interviews, document reviews, and observations in three organizations in Finland that made ITSI decisions to acquire a secure email application system, we examined the …
Willingness to Adopt Biochar in Agriculture: The Producer’s Perspective
2017
Most research on biochar has focused either on the mechanistic or the biophysical aspects, and there has been relatively little research into the social applicability and acceptance of biochar as a soil enhancer in agriculture. However, whether to adopt biochar in their practice is ultimately the farmers’ decision, and their willingness to do so is crucial. Here, we show the producer’s perspective on adopting biochar, using Polish farmers as a case study. Poland is an interesting case study because biochar has only recently attracted the attention of researchers, entrepreneurs, and other stakeholders there. We performed standardized, semi-structured interviews with 161 Polish farmers to eva…
Exoenzymes of Wine Microorganisms
2008
The production of wine from grape juice is predominantly the result of enzymatic reactions. The enzymes originate from the grape itself, from epiphytic fungi like Botrytis cinerea colonizing the grape surface and finally from yeasts and bacteria growing in the must until termination of alcoholic fermentation. Especially nonSaccharomyces yeasts, also called “wild” yeasts, belonging to the genera Kloeckera, Candida, Debaryomyces, Rhodotorula, Pichia, Zygosaccharomyces, Hanseniaspora, Kluyveromyces, and Metschnikowia produce and secrete several enzymes (esterases, glycosidases, lipases, glucanases, proteases, cellulases, etc.) to the periplasmatic space and the medium where they may interact w…
Yeast-Bacteria Coinoculation
2019
Abstract Yeasts and lactic acid bacteria (LAB) coinoculation is the simultaneous, or close in time inoculation, of both types of microorganisms in winemaking. Coinoculation has been used mainly to early accomplish malolactic fermentation (MLF), employing generally the couples Oenococcus oeni/Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Lactobacillus plantarum/S. cerevisiae. Early completion of MLF decreases the overall vinification time, reduces the microbial spoilage risk, and even prevents the biogenic amines synthesis. LAB/yeasts coinoculation could be also used to increase the acidity of wines when inoculated in grape must, using sugar to synthesize lactic acid and producing ethanol diminution. Coinocu…
Transcriptomic and proteomic insights of the wine yeast biomass propagation process
2010
Transcriptome and proteome profiles have been established for the commercial wine yeast strain T73 during an important industrial process: yeast biomass propagation. The data from both analyses reveal that the metabolic transition from fermentation to respiration is the most critical step in biomass propagation. We identified 177 ORFs and 56 proteins among those most expressed during the process, thus highlighting cell stress response, mitochondrial and carbohydrate metabolism as the most represented functional categories. A direct correlation between mRNA changes and protein abundance was observed for several functional categories such as tricarboxylic acid cycle proteins, heat shock prote…
An interactive surrogate-based method for computationally expensive multiobjective optimisation
2019
Many disciplines involve computationally expensive multiobjective optimisation problems. Surrogate-based methods are commonly used in the literature to alleviate the computational cost. In this paper, we develop an interactive surrogate-based method called SURROGATE-ASF to solve computationally expensive multiobjective optimisation problems. This method employs preference information of a decision-maker. Numerical results demonstrate that SURROGATE-ASF efficiently provides preferred solutions for a decision-maker. It can handle different types of problems involving for example multimodal objective functions and nonconvex and/or disconnected Pareto frontiers. peerReviewed
