"Imperial Networks, Colonial Bioprospecting and Burroughs Wellcome & Co.: The Case of Strophanthus Kombe from Malawi (1859-1915)"

Recent research has begun to highlight the complex connections between colonialism, medical and scientific knowledge-production, and commercial interests. This article analyses colonial ‘bioprospecting’ through a case study of Strophanthus kombe. Used locally as an arrow poison, Strophanthus was ‘discovered’ in Malawi during David Livingstone’s Zambesi expedition. After investigation and experimentation it was subsequently used to produce a cardiac drug. The Malawian case study complements previous work on Strophanthus from West Africa. Among adults, the principal risk factor for invasive nontyphoidal Salmonella (iNTS) disease is advanced HIV infection; up to 44% of HIV-infected patients experience bacteremic recurrence through recrudescence of the original infection (2,3). Tutkielmassa tarkastellaan turismin liittyvää vapaamuotoista kanssakäymistä paikallisten malawilaisten sekä ulkomaalaisten asukkaiden ja matkailijoiden välillä. Etnografinen pääaineisto on kerätty Malawissa keväällä 2013 ja se koostuu haastatteluista ja muistiinpanoista. Tosisijainen aineisto koostuu raporteista ja asiakirjoista, joiden tarkoitus on hahmotella ruohonjuuritason vuorovaikutukselle laajempi yhteiskunnallinen konteksti. Pro gradu-tutkielmassani tarkastelen miten kahta afrikkalaista naispresidenttiä - Liberian presidentti Ellen Johnson Sirleafiä, ja Malawin presidentti Joyce Bandaa on kuvattu mediassa. Tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on ymmärtää miten eri medialähteet(malawilaiset, liberialaiset, afrikkalaiset ja kansainväliset mediat) ovat kuvanneet kahta naispresidenttiä, ja miten naispresidentit ovat tuoneet itsensä esille mediassa.
