Drug-related cardiotoxicity for the treatment of haematological malignancies in elderly.

2010

Several publications have focused on the cardiotoxicity of specific classes of haematological therapeutic agents such as antracyclines and cyclofosfamide. Cardiotoxicity of cancer chemotherapeutics is a problem for patients of all ages, but it increases with age. Toxicity can also be developed months after the last chemotherapy dose, and late reactions can be seen years later when they present new-onset cardiomyopathy. No data are available about the cardiotoxicity of non-chemotherapy agents currently used as preferred therapy for haematological malignancy in elderly. In this review we have provided a summary of the cardiovascular toxic effects produced by different drugs and therapeutic ag…

SWALLOWING, SPEECH AND OROFACIAL DISORDERS IN CHILDREN WITH ADENOTONSILLAR HYPERTROPHY

2022

A prospective observational study was conducted to evaluate the presence of swallowing, speech and orofacial muscle imbalance (OMI) disorders in patients with adenotonsillar hypertrophy and their regression after surgery. ENT, speech therapist and dentistry examination were conducted before and 12 months after surgery in 78 children between the ages of 2 and 12 with dysphagia, speech disorders and OMI adenotonsillar hypertrophy related with sleep-disordered breathing. Of the 78 patients enrolled, 62 underwent adenotonsillectomy, 9 adenoidectomy and 7 volume reduction of the palatine tonsils with a 12-month post-operative increase in SWAL-QOL score, weight gain, correction of ogival palate, …

The molecular changes driving the carcinogenesis in Barrett's esophagus: which came first, the chicken or the egg?

2013

Esophageal adenocarcinoma originates from columnar metaplastic epithelium of the distal esophagus. Various steps for this carcinogenetic process are known. Before the onset of high-grade dysplasia and adenocarcinoma, endoscopic surveillance is possible. However, because of the high cost of long-term surveillance, predictive factors for cancer are being evaluated to identify subjects with metaplasia who have a higher risk of developing malignancy. Molecular changes seem suitable for this purpose, but could require a high resource expenditure. While trying to identify the best predictive factors for cancer risk, molecular changes and differences in miRNA expression profile between the various…

A multicriteria extension of the efficient market hypothesis

2021

Challenging the Efficient Market Hypothesis (EMH) has been a recurrent topic for researchers and practitioners since its formulation. Hundreds of empirical studies claim to either prove or disprove the EMH by means of a number of heterogeneous methods. Even though the EMH is usually adjusted to a measure of risk, there is a lack of a formal analysis within a multiple-criteria context. In this paper, we propose a extension of the EMH that accommodates the foundations of multiple-criteria decision analysis. To this end, we rely on a family of parametric signed dissimilarity measures to assess multidimensional performance differences. Since normalization is a critical step in our approach to a…

Effective Field Theory

2015

Effective field theories (EFTs) are a highly important topic in Quantum Field Theory. Here we are going to shortly present some important highlights as well as the renormalization group equations for the Wilson coefficients. Afterwards we shall focus on one illustrative example and present the \(\textit{matching}\) procedure at the one-loop level. The infrared behaviour of EFTs is also covered with this example.

EGFL7 ligates αvβ3 integrin to enhance vessel formation

2013

Angiogenesis, defined as blood vessel formation from a preexisting vasculature, is governed by multiple signal cascades including integrin receptors, in particular integrin αVβ3. Here we identify the endothelial cell (EC)-secreted factor epidermal growth factor-like protein 7 (EGFL7) as a novel specific ligand of integrin αVβ3, thus providing mechanistic insight into its proangiogenic actions in vitro and in vivo. Specifically, EGFL7 attaches to the extracellular matrix and by its interaction with integrin αVβ3 increases the motility of EC, which allows EC to move on a sticky underground during vessel remodeling. We provide evidence that the deregulation of EGFL7 in zebrafish embryos leads …

Temperature and doping dependence of normal state spectral properties in a two-orbital model for ferropnictides

2016

Using a second-order perturbative Green's functions approach we determined the normal state single-particle spectral function $A(\vec{k},\omega)$ employing a minimal effective model for iron-based superconductors. The microscopic model, used before to study magnetic fluctuations and superconducting properties, includes the two effective tight-binding bands proposed by S.Raghu et al. [Phys. Rev. B 77, 220503 (R) (2008)], and intra- and inter-orbital local electronic correlations, related to the Fe-3d orbitals. Here, we focus on the study of normal state electronic properties, in particular the temperature and doping dependence of the total density of states, $A(\omega)$, and of $A(\vec{k},\o…

Molecular profiling of blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm reveals a unique pattern and suggests selective sensitivity to NF-kB pathway inhi…

2014

Blastic plasmacytoid dendritic cell neoplasm (BPDCN) is a rare disease of controversial origin recently recognized as a neoplasm deriving from plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDCs). Nevertheless, it remains an orphan tumor with obscure biology and dismal prognosis. To better understand the pathobiology of BPDCN and discover new targets for effective therapies, the gene expression profile (GEP) of 25 BPDCN samples was analyzed and compared with that of pDCs, their postulated normal counterpart. Validation was performed by immunohistochemistry (IHC), whereas functional experiments were carried out ex vivo. For the first time at the molecular level, we definitely recognized the cellular derivati…

Recovery of anthocyanins from eggplant peel

2009

Abstract Tartaric and malic acid solutions were tested to extract anthocyanins from eggplant peel by a discontinuous process to obtain a natural red colorant. Extraction optimization was carried out, using different solvents, acid concentration, temperature, time of extraction and solvent-to-solid ratio as independent variables. Tartaric acid was more efficient than malic acid in both extraction yield and rate. Comparative tests were carried out using acidified ethanol as solvent. Delphinidin-3-rutinoside was extracted and identified as the major anthocyanin in eggplant peel. Concentration of different extracts from eggplant peel was carried out using EXA-31, a methacrylic food grade resin,…
