Functional Derivative Approach
2001
Let us now leave the path integral formalism temporarily and reformulate operatorial quantum mechanics in a way which will make it easy later on to establish the formal connection between operator and path integral formalism. Our objective is to introduce the generating functional into quantum mechanics. Naturally we want to generate transition amplitudes. The problem confronting us is how to transcribe operator quantum mechanics as expressed in Heisenberg’s equation of motion into a theory formulated solely in terms of c-numbers. This can be achieved either by Schwinger’s action principle or with the aid of a generation functional defined as follows:
Kontsevich formality and cohomologies for graphs
2004
A formality on a manifold M is a quasi isomorphism between the space of polyvector fields (Tpoly(M)) and the space of multidifferential operators (Dpoly(M)). In the case M=R d , such a mapping was explicitly built by Kontsevich, using graphs drawn in configuration spaces. Looking for such a construction step by step, we have to consider several cohomologies (Hochschild, Chevalley, and Harrison and Chevalley) for mappings defined on Tpoly. Restricting ourselves to the case of mappings defined with graphs, we determine the corresponding coboundary operators directly on the spaces of graphs. The last cohomology vanishes.
Renormalization and Knot Theory
1997
We investigate to what extent renormalization can be understood as an algebraic manipulation on concatenated one-loop integrals. We find that the resulting algebra indicates a useful connection to knot theory as well as number theory and report on recent results in support of this connection.
Mismatch G-T binding activity and MSH2 expression is quantitatively related to sensitivity of cells to methylating agents
1998
To elucidate mechanisms involved in alkylating drug resistance, Chinese hamster cells resistant to methylating agents have been generated upon transfection with human DNA. Here it is shown that these Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) variants exhibit the tolerance phenotype: they are alkyltransferase deficient (Mex-), cross-resistant to 6-thioguanine, exhibit reduced G-T binding (MutS alpha) activity and express the mismatch repair protein MSH2 at a significantly lower level than the corresponding control. By comparing wild-type cells with different tolerant strains that show gradual differences in resistance to methylating agents, it was shown that both the G-T binding activity and the amount of…
A Refractive Index Sensor Based on the Resonant Coupling to Cladding Modes in a Fiber Loop
2013
We report an easy-to-build, compact, and low-cost optical fiber refractive index sensor. It consists of a single fiber loop whose transmission spectra exhibit a series of notches produced by the resonant coupling between the fundamental mode and the cladding modes in a uniformly bent fiber. The wavelength of the notches, distributed in a wavelength span from 1,400 to 1,700 nm, can be tuned by adjusting the diameter of the fiber loop and are sensitive to refractive index changes of the external medium. Sensitivities of 170 and 800 nm per refractive index unit for water solutions and for the refractive index interval 1.40-1.442, respectively, are demonstrated. We estimate a long range resolut…
Sensitivity optimization with cladding-etched long period fiber gratings at the dispersion turning point
2016
This work presents a refractive index sensor based on a long period fiber grating (LPFG) made in a reduced cladding fiber whose low order cladding modes have the turning point at large wavelengths. The combination of these parameters results in an improved sensitivity of 8734 nm/refractive index unit (RIU) for the LP0,3 mode in the 1400-1650 wavelength range. This value is similar to that obtained with thin-film coated LPFGs, which permits to avoid the coating deposition step. The numerical simulations are in agreement with the experimental results. This work was supported in part by the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science-FEDER TEC2013-43679-R. J.L. Cruz also acknowledges financial s…
Two-core transversally chirped microstructured optical fiber refractive index sensor
2014
We present a sensing architecture consisting of a two-core chirped microstructured optical fiber (MOF) for refractive index sensing of fluids. We show that by introducing a chirp in the hole size, the MOF can be a structure with decoupled cores, forming a Mach-Zehnder interferometer in which the analyte directly modulates the device transmittance by its differential influence on the effective refractive index of each core mode. We show that by filling all fiber holes with analyte, the sensing structure achieves high sensitivity (transmittance changes of 300 per RIU at 1.42) and has the potential for use over a wide range of analyte refractive index.
dIvergEnt: How IgE Axis Contributes to the Continuum of Allergic Asthma and Anti-IgE Therapies
2017
[EN] Asthma is an airway disease characterised by chronic inflammation with intermittent or permanent symptoms including wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and cough, which vary in terms of their occurrence, frequency, and intensity. The most common associated feature in the airways of patients with asthma is airway inflammation. In recent decades, efforts have been made to characterise the heterogeneous clinical nature of asthma. The interest in improving the definitions of asthma phenotypes and endotypes is growing, although these classifications do not always correlate with prognosis nor are always appropriate therapeutic approaches. Attempts have been made to identify the m…
Mycotoxin Profile and Phylogeny of Pathogenic Alternaria Species Isolated from Symptomatic Tomato Plants in Lebanon
2021
The tomato is one of the most consumed agri-food products in Lebanon. Several fungal pathogens, including Alternaria species, can infect tomato plants during the whole growing cycle. Alternaria infections cause severe production and economic losses in field and during storage. In addition, Alternaria species represent a serious toxicological risk since they are able to produce a wide range of mycotoxins, associated with different toxic activities on human and animal health. Several Alternaria species were detected on tomatoes, among which the most important are A. solani, A. alternata, and A. arborescens. A set of 49 Alternaria strains isolated from leaves and stems of diseased tomato plant…
"Saliamoci sopra e voliamo via..." Percorsi di Beni Montresor e Philip Glass verso "Le Streghe di Venezia" (1994-2009)
2016
