Characterization of the interaction of the antifungal and cytotoxic cyclic glycolipopeptide hassallidin with sterol-containing lipid membranes.

Hassallidins are cyclic glycolipopeptides produced by cyanobacteria and other prokaryotes. The hassallidin structure consists of a peptide ring of eight amino acids where a fatty acid chain, additional amino acids, and sugar moieties are attached. Hassallidins show antifungal activity against several opportunistic human pathogenic fungi, but does not harbor antibacterial effects. However, they have not been studied on mammalian cells, and the mechanism of action is unknown. We purified hassallidin D from cultured cyanobacterium Anabaena sp. Application of molecular topology to the prediction of antifungal activity for a set of dication-substituted carbazoles, furans and benzimidazoles

In this paper, the endpoint is the application of molecular topology to the search of QSAR relations into a group of dicationsubstituted carbazoles, furans and benzimidazoles, all showing antifungal activity against C. albicans. Mathematical and statistical methods such as linear regression and discriminant analysis, are used to goal. Amyloid-β peptide (Aβ) toxicity and tau hyperphosphorylation are hallmarks of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). How their molecular relationships may affect the etiology, progression, and severity of the disease, however, has not been elucidated. We now report that incubation of foetal rat cortical neurons with Aβ up-regulates expression of the Regulator of Calcineurin gene RCAN1, and this is mediated by Aβ-induced oxidative stress. Calcineurin (PPP3CA) is a serine-threonine phosphatase that dephosphorylates tau. RCAN1 proteins inhibit this phosphatase activity of calcineurin. Isomeric arrangement of the left atrial appendages and visceral heterotaxy: two atypical cases.

AbstractWe present two cases in which there was isomeric arrangement oi the left atrial appendages in association with multiple spleens and complete heart block. In both of these, the venous connections were normal. In one case the arrangement of the bronchial tree and the lungs was normal, the liver was left-sided, and the stomach was right-sided. In the other case, there was left isomeric broncho-pulmonary morphology, and both liver and stomach were right-sided. Central corneal thickness in mucopolysaccharidosis II and VI.

Objective To describe the ultrasonographically detected central corneal thickness (CCT) in patients with Type II and VI mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS) and its impact on applanation tonometry and glaucoma detection. Methods Twenty-eight patients with MPS (19 MPS II, nine MPS VI) underwent pachymetric investigation of CCT. From 2017, an unknown rural settlement in Contrada Castro at Corleone (Palermo Province, western Sicily) was investigated as part of the `Harvesting Memories Project¿. The stratigraphic sequence, supported by radiocarbon dating, has demonstrated a reoccupation of a pre-Roman site during the transition between the Byzantine and Islamic periods.
