Pterostilbene-induced tumor cytotoxicity: a lysosomal membrane permeabilization-dependent mechanism.
2012
The phenolic phytoalexin resveratrol is well known for its health-promoting and anticancer properties. Its potential benefits are, however, limited due to its low bioavailability. Pterostilbene, a natural dimethoxylated analog of resveratrol, presents higher anticancer activity than resveratrol. The mechanisms by which this polyphenol acts against cancer cells are, however, unclear. Here, we show that pterostilbene effectively inhibits cancer cell growth and stimulates apoptosis and autophagosome accumulation in cancer cells of various origins. However, these mechanisms are not determinant in cell demise. Pterostilbene promotes cancer cell death via a mechanism involving lysosomal membrane …
Epidemiology of malignant melanoma in the province of Palermo (2003-2005)
2011

Background: The incidence of melanoma has steadily increased worldwide and shows geographical variability according to latitude. The aim of this study was to describe the incidence of cutaneous malignant melanoma (CMM) cases in the Province of Palermo during the period 2003-2005.

Methods: 231 incident cases of CMM, registered by the Cancer Registry of Palermo, were analysed. Anatomic localization, histological type, thickness, ulceration, margins, any lymph node involvement and metastases were evaluated. A statistical analysis of survival rates was performed.

Results</stro…
Malignant metastatic melanoma to the gallbladder: Report of a peculiar case
2020
Highlights • Melanoma is one of the most aggressive and one of the fastest growing types of cancer. The gallbladder envolvement from a metastatic cutaneous malignant melanoma is a highly uncommon finding, usually associated with diffuse metastatic disease and observed during autopsy. • We report a case of a 35-years old Caucasian woman with isolated metastasis of gallbladder form cutaneous primary malignant melanoma underwent to laparoscopic cholecystectomy. • Malignant cutaneous melanoma is a skin cancer characterized by the highest mortality. Isolated metastasis of gallbladder are barely described and mostly present in a widespread metastatic disease. Surgical treatment is indicated consi…
A Rare Case of Primary Gastric Melanoma
2019
Abstract Primary melanomas in the gastrointestinal tract are extremely rare, with an estimated prevalence of 0.5 to 1 case per million. Primary mucosal melanomas of gastric origin account for approximately 1–3% of all primary melanomas in the gastrointestinal tract. We present the case of a patient who underwent surgery due to primary gastric melanoma.
Oral non-squamous malignant tumors: diagnosis and treatment
2007
Some 90% of oral cancers consist of squamous cell carcinomas that arise from the oral mucosa. The remaining 10% of malignancies consist of malignant melanomas, carcinomas of the intraoral salivary glands, sarcomas of the soft tissues and the bones, malignant odontogenic tumors, non-Hodgkin?s lymphomas and metastases from primary tumors located elsewhere in the body. These malignancies will be briefly reviewed and discussed. The emphasis is on diagnosis and management.
