Interaction of methyltin(IV) compounds with carboxylate ligands. Part 2: Formation thermodynamic parameters, predictive relationships and sequesterin…
2008
Thermodynamic data of mono-, di- and tri-methyltin(IV)-carboxylate complexes (acetate, malonate, succinate, oxydiacetate, diethylenetrioxydiacetate, malate, citrate, 1,2,3-tricarballylate, 1,2,3,4-butanetetracarboxylate, 1,2,3,4,5,6-benzenehexacarboxylate) in aqueous solution are reported at t = 25 °C and I = 0 mol l−1. Thermodynamic parameters obtained were analysed to formulate empirical predictive relationships as a function of different parameters, such as the number of carboxylate groups of the ligand and the charge of the alkyltin(IV) cation. Sequestration diagrams of citrate and 1,2,3-tricarballylate towards alkyltin(IV) cations at different pH values are also reported and discussed.…
Effect of nitrogen limitation and nature of the feed upon Oenococcus oeni metabolism and extracellular protein production
2005
Aims: The aim of the study was to characterize the effect of various nitrogen sources on Oenococcus oeni growth, carbon source utilization, extracellular protease activity and extracellular proteins. More generally, the goal is to understand how nitrogen-based additives might act to enhance malolactic fermentation in wine. Methods and Results: Five yeast extracts were used. As the amino acid and nitrogen analyses revealed, they were similar in global amino acid composition, except for arginine level. Nevertheless the ratio of amino acids between free/bound, and low/high molecular weight fractions were highly different. One of the yeast extracts led to a significant protease activity in th…
Comparison of the facial profile attractiveness in Class III borderline patients after surgical or compensatory orthodontic treatment
2020
Background This study aimed to compare the facial profile attractiveness of Class III borderline patients after surgical or compensatory orthodontic treatment. Material and Methods The sample consisted of 60 borderline Class III malocclusion patients, divided into two groups: Group 1 (Surgical): 30 patients (16 male; 14 female) treated with orthodontic fixed appliances and bimaxillary orthognathic surgery. Mean initial age was 20.05 years (s.d.=2.40) and mean treatment time was 2.23 years (s.d.=0.82). Group 2 (Compensatory): 30 patients (13 male; 17 female) treated compensatorily with fixed appliances and Class III elastics. Mean initial age was 18.53 years (s.d.=4.35) and mean treatment ti…
Efficacy of the antioxidant ebselen in experimental uveitis.
1999
Inflammation results in the production of free radicals. In a model of experimental uveitis upon subcutaneous injection of endotoxin to Lewis rats, i.e., endotoxin-induced experimental uveitis (EIU), we have evaluated the status of the antioxidant capacity of ocular tissues. EIU results in a decrease of glutathione (GSH) content and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity in whole eye homogenates 24-h after endotoxin administration. Furthermore, an increase in malondialdehyde (MDA) content was observed in these same samples, thus confirming the involvement of oxidative stress in the pathophysiology of the process. In view of the ability of the antioxidant ebselen as GPx enzyme mimic, we teste…
Role of oxygen and nitrogen species in experimental uveitis: anti-inflammatory activity of the synthetic antioxidant ebselen.
2002
This study was aimed at examining the role of oxygen and nitrogen reactive species in a model of experimental uveitis upon intravitreal injection of bacterial endotoxin to albino New Zealand rabbits. The inflammatory response was evaluated in terms of: (i) the integrity of the blood aqueous barrier (protein and cell content in samples of aqueous humor), (ii) histopathological changes of the eyes, (iii) clinical evaluation (with a score index based on clinical symptoms), and (iv) the concentration of malondialdehyde (MDA), in aqueous humor, as a marker of oxidative stress. Betamethasone was used as reference treatment, superoxide dismutase as quencher of superoxide anion, L-N(G)-nitro-L-argi…
Ebselen prevents chronic alcohol-induced rat hippocampal stress and functional impairment
2007
Background: Most of the previously published data suggest a role for oxidative or nitrosative stress in ethanol-induced nervous system damage. Moreover, ethanol is able to impair learning abilities in adult mammalian brain, a process suggested to be directly related to hippocampal neurogenesis. Ebselen, a synthetic compound with antioxidant properties, is able to prevent ethanol-induced impairment of neurogenesis in adult rats. The aim of the present work was to further demonstrate the ability of ebselen to prevent biochemical alterations, and preserve long-term potentiation (LTP) and learning abilities, in the hippocampus of chronic alcoholic adult rats. Methods: Biochemical markers of oxi…
Mechanistic Investigations of the BZ Reaction with Oxalic Acid Substrate. I. The Oscillatory Parameter Region and Rate Constants Measured for the Rea…
2004
This paper is the first part of a study reinvestigating the mechanism of the Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction of oxalic acid, which is the simplest organic substrate for a BZ oscillator. New experiments are performed to find the oscillatory region in 1 M sulfuric acid at 20 °C. The removal rate of the end product bromine by an inert gas stream is a critical parameter here: oscillations can be observed only in a window of that parameter. The “rate constant” for the physical removal of bromine is measured as a function of the gas flow rate and reactor volume; furthermore, the rate constants of three component reactions important in this system are also determined. These are oxygen atom tran…
Circulating plasmalogens in patients with primary open angle glaucoma
2011
Purpose: Neuronal tissues such as the retina contain high amounts of particular phospholipids named “ether-lipids”. Since abnormal blood levels of ether-lipids have been associated with several neurological disorders, we wanted to check whether ether-lipid levels were modified and associated with the severity of POAG. Methods: Blood samples were collected from 41 healthy subjects and 64 POAG patients. Following lipid extraction from erythrocytes, total phospholipids including ether-lipids were isolated using silica cartridges. The fatty acid profile of phospholipids was determined using capillary column gas chromatography (GC). The individual molecular species of phospholipids and ether-lip…
Isotopic Effect on the Kinetics of the Belousov-Zhabotinsky Reaction
2007
In this work we present results about the deuterium isotope effect on the global kinetics of a Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction in batch conditions. A nonlinear dependence of the Induction Period upon the percentage of deuterated reactants was found. The isotopic effect on the bromination reaction of malonic acid was evaluated.
The effect of N-tetradecyl-N,N-dimethylamine oxide micelles on the kinetics of the electron transfer reaction of Ce(IV) with substituted malonic acids
2009
Abstract The kinetics of the oxidation of malonic acid and (its substituted compounds, methyl-, ethyl-, butyl- and benzyl-malonic acid) by ceric ions has been studied at 20.0 °C in the absence and the presence of the surfactant N-tetradecyl-N,N-dimethylamine oxide (C 14 DMAO). The addition of increasing amounts of C 14 DMAO influences the rate of the redox process to an extent that significantly depends on the hydrophobicity of the reducing species. The reactivity data together with the estimated binding constants and the standard transfer free energies of the malonic acids from water to the micelles suggest that the malonic acid is confined to the aqueous pseudo-phase while for the other s…
