Local spatial planning versus UNESCO WHL Management Plans: a comparison of two cases in Sicily
2012
This paper aims to investigate the relationship between tourism and planning in UNESCO World Heritage List (WHL) sites, with special reference to the relation between Management Plans and other (local and regional) planning instruments and policies able to influence the promotion of sustainable and responsible development. This will be explored through a confrontation between two important tourist locations in Sicily: Agrigento (the Valley of the Temples) and the Aeolian Islands, which have both been recognized as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. The analysis of these case studies will point out the challenge of integrating different management and planning regimes – which mainly refer to a …
The role of landscape planning in UNESCO site management plans in Sicily. The case of “Syracuse and the Rocky Necropolis of Pantalica” and the resili…
2022
During the process of the updating of the UNESCO sites management plans of South-East Sicily, commissioned by the Italian Ministry of Culture and the Sicily Region in 2019, the support of landscape plans proved to be fundamental in order to estimate the protection level of the sites. Scopes of the present contribution are, on the one hand, to state the high protection level of the UNESCO sites granted from the landscape and spatial planning constraints and, on the other hand, to question the protection level in the long term perspective, in face of the effects of the climate crisis and hazardous events. “Syracuse and the Rocky Necropolis of Pantalica” have been chosen as a case study becaus…
Élaboration du plan de gestion de l’espace naturel sensible des versants de Vuillafans et Châteauvieux-les-Fossés
2014
The value of the “Espace Naturel Sensible des versants de Châteauvieux et Vuillafans” is based on a natural habitats mosaic that support an originality and a diversity of flora and entomological that we want to preserve. However, in dry grasslands which are habitats of the European community, we can see gradually the emergence of shrub and reforestation due to the difficult to mechanize hills and very fragmented private lands that favored the abandonment of agricultural practices on the slopes. To efficiently program the management of this area, a management plan, which is now a recognize tools for managers of natural areas, was written. To achieve the management plan objectives, the privat…
Climate variability in forest management planning: The LIFE AForClimate project.
2018
Previous research experiences have shown that climate variability can play a relevant role in forest planning and management within a climate change scenario. In forest planning and management, yield tables, site quality indices, age classes, and rates of growth are some of the most frequently used parameters and tools. However, these ‘traditional’ methods do not include the influence of climate variability on forest growth over time, although it is one of the main influencing factors in tree growth. Changes in climate determine changes in thermo-pluviometric regimes that often have a marked influence on forest growth trends. Forest biomass, resilience, and carbon sequestration may be damag…
STUDIO PROPEDEUTICO PER LA REDAZIONE DI UN PIANO DI GESTIONE FORESTALE DEL BOSCO TARDARA, SUGHERETA PURA DEL COMUNE DI TUSA (MESSINA)
2019
2019
In Sicily, forest planning still has too many gaps. This study proposes both to make a contribution to the current cognitive framework of the Nebrodi chestnut groves, and to draw up a management plan that is still lacking in order to identify forestry addresses and sustainable management necessary to maintain and defend these forest formations.
The (controversial) role of the UNESCO WHL Management Plans in promoting sustainable tourism development
2012
This paper investigates the relationship between tourism and planning in UNESCO World Heritage List (WHL) sites. It concentrates on the relation between Management Plans (MPs) and other (local and regional) planning instruments and policies able to influence the promotion of sustainable and responsible development. This is explored through an examination of two important tourist locations in Sicily: Agrigento (the Valley of the Temples) and the Aeolian Islands, which have both been recognized as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO. The analysis of these case studies will point out the challenge of integrating different management and planning regimes. The paper shows how supranational policies o…
Improving Economic Management Decisions in Forestry with the SorSim Assortment Model
2020
The sustainable supply of timber is one of the most important forest ecosystem services and a decisive factor determining the long-term profitability of forest enterprises. If timber production is to be economically viable, there must always be a way to analyse forest stands and trees felled for exploitation with regard to the wood assortments they contain. Only then can the expected timber yields, achieved by various silvicultural strategies or actions and different sorting options, be quantified with sufficient accuracy. The SorSim assortment simulator was developed for forest practitioners and forest scientists in Switzerland to realistically simulate the sorting of individual trees and …
Solving Conflicts among Conservation, Economic, and Social Objectives in Boreal Production Forest Landscapes: Fennoscandian Perspectives
2018
This chapter discusses challenges and possibilities involved in preserving biological diversity and the diversity of ecosystem services in the boreal zone and yet at the same time maintaining intensive timber extraction in boreal forests. Our focus is on Fennoscandian forests at the landscapes level, and we consider economic, social and ecological in the sustainability of forest management. We provide an outlook to boreal forest ecosystems and their history, and an overview of the forestry practices and policies that aim to ensure multi-functionality of Fennoscandian forests, i.e. diversity of efforts on sustaining biodiversity, timber production and other ecosystem services from forest lan…
The MIMOSE Approach to Support Sustainable Forest Management Planning at Regional Scale in Mediterranean Contexts
2017
In recent decades, Mediterranean landscapes have been affected by human-induced drivers, such as land use and climate change. Forest ecosystems and landscapes have been particularly affected in mountainous regions due to limited management and stewardship, especially in remote areas. Therefore, there is a need to set up new strategies to enhance ecosystem services in forested areas which, in turn, will benefit local communities and economies. In this study, we implemented a new approach—Multiscale Mapping of Ecosystem Services (MIMOSE)—to assess ecosystem services in Mediterranean forests located in a mountainous region of Italy. We spatially assessed timber provision and carbon sequestrati…
