Current European approaches in highway runoff management: A review
2022
Highway runoff is one of the most significant non-point sources of pollution for the terrestrial and aquatic environment with biological, physical, and chemical effects. Considering local characteristics, treatment practices, and determining factors are essential for highway runoff management. The aim of this paper is to survey the review of highway runoff management in Europe with emphasis on runoff characterization, treatment, and modeling approaches and identifying possible knowledge gaps exists based on our review. The results showed that highway runoff has spatiotemporal variation, which is the main factor in the regional selection of the best management practice (BMP). Also, recent st…
Conflicts related to Human Resource Management in Finnish Project-Based Companies
2020
In contemporary working life of Nordic countries, employee involvement and well-being are emphasized and organizational functions and demands are continuously changing. Thus, the study of human resource management (HRM) practices and their consequences for employees is relevant. This study examines conflicts related to HRM in Finnish project-based companies and provides new information on the implications of conflicts in HRM practices for theorists and practitioners. The research was conducted qualitatively using content and thematic analysis. The findings suggest that conflicts framed within HRM practices are generally the result of the practices and expectations of the organization and ma…
The effect of learning-based distinctive competencies on firm performance: a study of spanish hospitality firms
2011
In spite of the importance of knowledge assets, few empirical studies have examined how knowledge is generated in organizations and the effect of knowledge management on learning-based competencies. This research studies the effect of introducing knowledge management programs in the development of learning-based distinctive competencies as these factors relate to a firm¿s performance. Based on responses from managers at 193 Spanish hospitality firms, the study concludes that the introduction of knowledge management principles and practices promotes creation of learning-based distinctive competencies, which, in conjunction with a knowledge management approach, has a positive causal relations…
Temporal trends in prehospital management of ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction from 2002 to 2010 in Cote d’Or: Data from the RICO registry (…
2012
Summary Background Myocardial infarction with ST-segment elevation (STEMI) is a medical emergency requiring specific management, with the main aim of achieving reperfusion as quickly as possible. Guidelines from medical societies have defined optimal management, with proven efficacy on morbi-mortality. Aims Our study aimed to evaluate trends in practices between 2002 and 2010 in the emergency management of STEMI in a single French department, namely Cote d’Or. Methods All patients admitted with a first STEMI to one of the six participating coronary care units (private or public) in Cote d’Or since January 2001 were included in a prospective registry (obseRvatoire des Infarctus de Cote d’Or …
Resilienza delle foreste mediterranee. Le buone pratiche del progetto RESILFORMED.
2015
The Resilformed LIFE project aims to preserve forest ecosystems in the Mediterranean against the risks resulting from climate change, through naturalization, increase biodiversity and improved responsiveness in the recovery process from destabilizing events. The article illustrates the best practices identified through the analysis provided by the project and the system to evaluate different interventions summarized in a survey form.
Resilience of Mediterranean Forests to Climate Change
2017
In the Mediterranean region, forests play a key role in the welfare of urban and rural peoples, by providing highly appreciated marketed goods as well as high value but nonmarket services. Anthropogenic climate change entails a significant impact on Mediterranean forests, such as the reduced species diversity, high density, pest, and diseases. In this chapter, we present the achievements of the project LIFE ResilForMed (Resilience of Mediterranean Forests to climate change), as Sicilian responds on adaptation and mitigation to climate change: (i) map of Sensitivity Forest Areas to desertification of the Sicilian region; (ii) list of bird indicators showing sensitivity to desertification in …
The Economy of Communion as a Social Innovation to Humanise Business
2018
The purpose of this chapter is to better understand the growth of EoC, analysing this movement from the perspective of social innovation and examining the innovative activities of EoC businesses. We have found that EoC is based on solid values and principles, and has a clear objective, which is to fight for a better world, eliminating poverty. Companies inspired by human-oriented management practices are those which move to achieve this objective. We argue in this chapter that EoC is a radical social innovation, as it is social in both its ends and its means, meeting social needs and creating new social relationships and collaborations. This paper analyses three Spanish EoC companies, using…
Urban Storm-Water Quality Management: Centralized versus Source Control
2010
The continuous growth of urban areas and the increasing public awareness of the environmental impacts of storm water have raised interest on the quality of the receiving water bodies. In the past two decades, many efforts have been directed at improving urban drainage systems by introducing mitigation measures to limit the negative environmental impacts of storm water. These mitigation measures are generally called best management practices (BMPs), sustainable urban drainage systems, or low impact developments, and they include practices such as infiltration and storage tanks that reduce the peak flow and retain some of the polluting materials. Choosing the best mitigation measure is still …
Innovation Management Practices in Production-Intensive Service Firms
2015
Postprint version of the article. This paper posits that innovation management practices are contingent upon the type of industry, and examines the innovation management practices in a distinctive set of service firms: production-intensive service firms. Production-intensive services are standardised services produced at a large scale. These services have received little attention from prior comprehensive qualitative innovation management practices research. The examination in this paper is based on in-depth interviews with 21 key-employees in five large Scandinavian production-intensive service firms. The results revealed a number of innovation management practices specific to production-i…
Resilienza delle foreste Mediterranee ai cambiamenti climatici - Guida al progetto [Resilience of Mediterranean forests to climate change – Project g…
2017
The overall objective of the project LIFE11+ ENV/IT/000215 RESILFORMED – Resilience of Mediterranean forests to climate change is to preserve the forest systems from the risks due to climate change, through naturalization processes, increased biodiversity and improved responsiveness, in the recovery process, coming from destabilizing events. The specific objective is to implement a regional forest policy able to increase resilience capacity of Sicilian forests, improving their ecosystem capacity and fostering the biodiversity preservation. The project has proposed to pursue five concrete results: 1) drafting guidelines for effective Mediterranean forest management with respect to climate ch…
