Influence of perioperative dexamethasone on delayed union in mandibular fractures: a clinical and radiological study

2014

Background: The aim was to clarify the occurrence of delayed union after surgical treatment of mandibular fracture and investigate whether an association exists between perioperative use of dexamethasone and delayed union. Material and Methods: Thirty-seven patients were included in a prospective randomized study. Of these patients, 19 (51.4%) were randomized to receive a total dose of 30 mg of dexamethasone and 18 (48.6%) served as controls. Patients underwent clinical and radiological investigation immediately, one month, three months and six months postoperatively. Radiographs were evaluated by an experienced, blinded senior oral radiologist. Results: Delayed fracture union was found in …

Short-term effect of zoledronic acid upon fracture resistance of the mandibular condyle and femoral head in an animal model

2013

Objective: The aim of this study was to compare the effects in terms of resistance to fracture of the mandibular condyle and femoral head following different doses of zoledronic acid in an animal model. Study design: A total of 80 adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were included in a prospective randomized study. The animals were randomly divided into four groups of 20 rats each. Group 1 (control) received sterile saline solution, while groups 2, 3 and 4 received a accumulated dose of 0.2 mg, 0.4 mg and 0.6 mg of zoledronic acid, respectively. The animals were sacrificed 28 days after the last dose, and the right hemimandible and the right femur were removed. The fracture strength was measured …

Nerve injury in fractures of the condylar neck.

1977

Summary Although fractures of the condylar neck belong to the most frequent injuries of the jaws, and various nerves are found in close proximity to the temporomandibular joints, only little mention is made in the literature of neurological complications arising from accidents. We have therefore carried out a prospective study on nerve injuries in 237 fractures of the articular process in the period 1971–1975. We found two cases of post-traumatic Frey's syndrome, whereby the syndrome developed from a post-traumatic auriculotemporal neuralgia. We also found loss of function of auriculotemporal, buccal and facial nerves, and loss of taste sensation of the tongue in another case, caused by dam…

Sejas un žokļu traumas Paula Stradiņa Klīniskajā Universitātes slimnīcā

2020

Coronectomy - An alternative approach to remove impacted teeth in oncological patients.

2018

Background Coronectomy involves the section of the tooth crown leaving the roots in the socket. Possibility of inferior alveolar nerve injury and mandibular fracture are the main indications for this approach. Herein, we describe a case series of coronectomy to highlight its indication in normal and oncological patients. Material and methods A total of 9 patients were submitted to coronectomy, 6 of them were oncological. Three patients were evaluated before head and neck radiotherapy (HNRT), 2 after HNRT and 1 before bone marrow transplantation. Results Mean age of the patients was 49 years, most of them male (n=7). Lower third molars were the main teeth that received this procedure, and al…

Association between eruption state of the third molar and the occurrence of mandibular angle fractures.

2015

Background/Aim Fractures of the mandible, especially the mandibular angle, are one of the most frequent types of injuries of the facial skeleton. In many cases, a retained third molar can be found in the line of the fracture. However, it remains unclear whether a relationship between third molars and mandibular angle fractures exists. Materials and Methods Patients with isolated or combined fractures of the lower jaw between January 2001 and December 2007 were analyzed retrospectively. Electronic health records were investigated regarding the types of mandibular fractures, and panoramic radiographs were reviewed concerning the existence of third molars. In addition, a systematic review was …

Do third molars weaken the mandibular angle?

2010

Objective: The purpose of this study is to estimate how is the magnitude of the impact of a mandibular third molar on the mandibular angle stiffness. Study Design: It was performed a literature search on whole MEDLINE and LILACS data base to find articles that match the following inclusion criteria: cohort studies presenting data on patients with mandibular fractures and third molars; that had a similar angle fracture definition; and that present data available to be cross-classified in a statistic analysis. Results: The sample was composed by 4 studies, involving 2533 patients from USA, Nigeria, Germany and Jordan, evaluated between 1976 and 2001. The analysis of the sample shows a relativ…

Photoelastic analysis of conventional and locking system for treatment of mandibular angle fractures with a single plate

2021

Made available in DSpace on 2021-06-25T10:28:10Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2021-04-01 Background: This photoelastic analysis evaluated stress distribution in different osteosynthesis systems, conventional and locking, used for treatment of mandibular angle fractures with a single plate. Material and Methods: Angle fractures were simulated in mandibles made of photoelastic resin. Following Champy’s method, plate osteosynthesis was performed. The samples were divided into five groups: Group 1, non-fractured mandible; Group 2, two screws were installed in each segment using a conventional system; Group 3, two screws were installed in each segment using a locking system; …

Spontaneous fracture of the mandibular genial tubercles: A case report

2007

Fracture of the mandibular genial tubercles is an uncommon pathology affecting edentulous patients with severe maxillary atrophy. Usually occurs spontaneously which complicates the diagnosis. Their importance lies in the functional alterations, which occur as a consequence of the disinsertion of the genihyoid and genioglossus muscles. The treatment of fracture of the genial tubercles is controversial, including no surgical intervention, excision of the avulsed bone fragments, and muscular repositioning. There have been only 11 cases reported in the literature of this fracture, most of them spontaneous. We present a difficult diagnosis situation of spontaneous fracture of the genial tubercle…

Comparison of analgesic effects of intravenous and intranasal ketorolac in patients with mandibular fracture-A Randomized Clinical Trial

2019

Background Similarity of pharmacokinetics of intranasal ketorolac to the intravenous form and other advantages have promoted its application. This study compared the analgesic effects of intravenous and intranasal ketorolac in patients undergoing mandibular fracture surgery. Material and Methods In this clinical trial study, Sixty-four patients with unilateral mandibular fracture were divided randomly into two groups. In group 1, 30 mg of intravenous (IV) ketorolac was injected every 8 hours and in group 2, intranasal (IN) ketorolac spray was used as a 100-µL puff in each nostril (31.5 mg) every 6 hours. After each patient regained consciousness, pain intensity was measured based on visual …
