New fossil arthropods (Notostraca and Insecta: Syntonopterida) in the Continental Middle Permian of Provence (Bas-Argens Basin, France).

2009

9 pages; Apart frequent and relatively common ichnites, only a few body fossils (Ostracoda) have been mentioned in the Red Continental Permian formations of Provence till these last years. During 2006 and 2007 field researches, new arthropods have been discovered in the Pradineaux Formation of the Bas-Argens. They are Triopsidae (Crustacea, Notostraca) and an insect wing (Syntonopteridae) corresponding to a new genus and species Gallolithoneura butchlii gen. et sp. n. This latter is the first insect record in the Permian of Provence and the youngest one of this enigmatic Carboniferous paleopteran family. As in the other French Permian basins (Lodève, Saint-Affrique), these discoveries demon…

Complete subunit sequences, structure and evolution of the 6 x 6-mer hemocyanin from the common house centipede, Scutigera coleoptrata.

2003

Hemocyanins are large oligomeric copper-containing proteins that serve for the transport of oxygen in many arthropod species. While studied in detail in the Chelicerata and Crustacea, hemocyanins had long been considered unnecessary in the Myriapoda. Here we report the complete molecular structure of the hemocyanin from the common house centipede Scutigera coleoptrata (Myriapoda: Chilopoda), as deduced from 2D-gel electrophoresis, MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry, protein and cDNA sequencing, and homology modeling. This is the first myriapod hemocyanin to be fully sequenced, and allows the investigation of hemocyanin structure-function relationship and evolution. S. coleoptrata hemocyanin is a 6…

Fossil representatives of the family Greenideidae (Hemiptera, Aphidoidea) from the Miocene of Europe

2002

Abstract Four new aphid species (Hemiptera, Aphidoidea, Greenideidae) are described on the basis of imprints in oil-shales from the Miocene of Europe (Rubielos de Mora, Spain; Vishnevaya Balka 〚Stavropol〛, Russia): Eutrichosiphum europaeum nov. sp., Greenidea hispanica nov. sp., Greenideoida (Pentatrichosiphum) turolensis nov. sp. and Mollitrichosiphum rubusensis nov. sp. All the taxa are placed within recent genera of the subfamily Greenideinae. Miocene representatives of this subfamily have been found in the south of Europe. Later changes of climatic conditions limited its geographic range to south-eastern Asia, where it is now represented by over 130 species of seven genera.

A new species of Tococladidae CARPENTER, 1966 from the Permian of France (Insecta: Archaeorthoptera)

2003

Abstract A new forewing venation pattern of the Tococladidae is proposed and the phylogenetic affinities of this family are discussed, based on Tococladus garrici nov. sp. This fossil comes from the Salagou Formation (Permian, Saxonian Group, Lodeve basin, France). The Tococladidae is assigned to the Archaeorthoptera BETHOUX and NEL, 2002 . The biostratigraphic implications of this discovery are briefly discussed, but it is still not possible to infer any definite conclusion about the age of this formation.

Palaeophylloxera nov. gen., The firstfossil specimen of the family Phylloxeridae (Hemiptera, Phylloxeroidea); Lower Miocene of Spain

1999

A fossil alate aphid from the Lower Aragonian (Lower Miocene) deposits of Rubielos de Mora (Teruelprovince) in eastern Spain is described as Palaeophylloxera seilacheri nov. gen. and sp. It is the first fossil specimen described within the Family Phylloxeridae. The principal differences between this genus and other representatives of the Phylloxeridae (and also the extinct Elektraphididae) are the apparent presence of an oblique vein on the hind wing, the presence of distinctly visible transverse striae on antennal segment III, and the peculier venation on the fore wings.

Saxonagrion minutus nov. gen. et sp., the oldest damselfly from the Upper Permian of France (Odonatoptera, Panodonata, Saxonagrionidae nov. fam.)

1999

Abstract Saxonagrion minutus nov. gen. et sp. was found in the Saxonian (Salagou Formation) of the Lodeve basin. It is the oldest and the first record of the modern infra-order Panodonata in the Palaezoic (Upper Permian of France). The present discovery supports the hypothesis concerning the persistance of many groups of Odonatoptera through the Permo-Triassic boundary.
