Negative results in the theory of games with lexicographic utilities

2003

When players may have lexicographic utilities, there are: (i) extensive games having a non-empty set of equilibria but empty sets of sequentially rational, sequential and perfect equilibria (ii) normal form games having a non-empty set of equilibria but an empty set of proper equilibria and no stable set of equilibria and (iii) two extensive games having the same normal form representation and disjoint sets of sequential equilibria.

Some decisional problems on rational relations

1997

Abstract In this paper we prove that the problem of deciding whether a deterministic rational relation is star-free is recursively solvable, although the same problem for any rational relation is undecidable. We also prove that a rational relation is star-free if and only if it is aperiodic and deterministic.

A remark on hyperplane sections of rational normal scrolls

2017

We present algebraic and geometric arguments that give a complete classification of the rational normal scrolls that are hyperplane section of a given rational normal scrolls.

An example of interplay between Physics and Mathematics: Exact resolution of a new class of Riccati Equations

2017

A novel recipe for exactly solving in finite terms a class of special differential Riccati equations is reported. Our procedure is entirely based on a successful resolution strategy quite recently applied to quantum dynamical time-dependent SU(2) problems. The general integral of exemplary differential Riccati equations, not previously considered in the specialized literature, is explicitly determined to illustrate both mathematical usefulness and easiness of applicability of our proposed treatment. The possibility of exploiting the general integral of a given differential Riccati equation to solve an SU(2) quantum dynamical problem, is succinctly pointed out.

La figura di Cassandra sulla scena tragica di V secolo: le testimonianze dell’Agamennone e delle Troiane

2020

In both Aeschylus’ Agamemnon and Euripides’ Trojan Women, Cassandra plays the role of tragic heroine, subjected to Apollo’s manipulation, aware of the past and the present of the house of Atreus and able to predict the future; but on stage the people she speaks with do not seem to understand her predictions and are not persuaded by her words. The aim of the paper is to focus on the main features of the tragic character of Cassandra in Aeschylus and Euripides and to investigate the levels of manipulation and communication.

La lexicografia catalana actual

1994

In this paper a general analysis of the evolution and current State of modem Catalan lexicography is undertaken, which starts with the setting up of a catalogue of lexicographic publications from 1940 onwards. In addition to the quantitative analysis of published dictionaries the paper introduces a typology study in order to sort out the variety and richness of modem Catalan lexicography. In the paper relevant data is presented on the situation of Catalan lexicography with respect to the quantity of existing dictionaries, and also on the factors that have determined their variety. Finally it can serve to establish the bases to build a lexicographic plan that helps to fill the gaps and avoid…

Effects of deep cervical flexor training on pressure pain thresholds over myofascial trigger points in patients with chronic neck pain.

2012

The purpose of this study was to assess the effects of a low-load training program for the deep cervical flexors (DCFs) on pain, disability, and pressure pain threshold (PPT) over cervical myofascial trigger points (MTrPs) in patients with chronic neck pain.Thirty patients with chronic idiopathic neck pain participated in a 6-week program of specific training for the DCF, which consisted of active craniocervical flexion performed twice per day (10-20 minutes) for the duration of the trial. Perceived pain and disability (Neck Disability Index, 0-50) and PPT over MTrPs of the upper trapezius, levator scapulae, and splenius capitis muscles were measured at the beginning and end of the training…

Crowd-out effect on consumers attitude towards corporate social responsibility communication

2022

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is assumed to function better in open societies and competitive markets where market forces drive communication and voluntary adoption of self-regulated quality CSR practices. Thus, the common wisdom maintains that consumer awareness of positive CSR activities of an organisation elicits positive perceptions about the organisation. Contrarily, we find negative and insignificant effect of CSR communication on perceived CSR performance in the context of Norway. The findings are consistent with predictions of crowding-out theory which submits that moderately enforced government policies can displace consumers’ intrinsic motivations to contribute to public g…

Manipulation of nanoparticles of different shapes inside a scanning electron microscope

2014

In this work polyhedron-like gold and sphere-like silver nanoparticles (NPs) were manipulated on an oxidized Si substrate to study the dependence of the static friction and the contact area on the particle geometry. Measurements were performed inside a scanning electron microscope (SEM) that was equipped with a high-precision XYZ-nanomanipulator. To register the occurring forces a quartz tuning fork (QTF) with a glued sharp probe was used. Contact areas and static friction forces were calculated by using different models and compared with the experimentally measured force. The effect of NP morphology on the nanoscale friction is discussed.
