Testing for goodness rather than lack of fit of an X–chromosomal SNP to the Hardy-Weinberg model

2019

The problem of checking the genotype distribution obtained for some diallelic marker for compatibility with the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (HWE) condition arises also for loci on the X chromosome. The possible genotypes depend on the sex of the individual in this case: for females, the genotype distribution is trinomial, as in the case of an autosomal locus, whereas a binomial proportion is observed for males. Like in genetic association studies with autosomal SNPs, interest is typically in establishing approximate compatibility of the observed genotype frequencies with HWE. This requires to replace traditional methods tailored for detecting lack of fit to the model with an equivalence test…

Gypsy homologous sequences in Drosophila subobscura (gypsyDS).

1993

Characterization of sequences homologous to the Drosophila melanogaster gypsy transposable element was carried out in Drosophila subobscura (gypsyDS). They were found to be widely distributed among natural populations of this species. From Southern blot and in situ analyses, these sequences appear to be mobile in this species. GypsyDS sequences are located in both euchromatic and heterochromatic regions. A complete gypsyDS sequence was isolated from a D. subobscura genomic library, and a 1.3-kb fragment which aligns with the ORF2 of the D. melanogaster gypsy element was sequenced. Comparisons of this sequence in three species (D. subobscura, D. melanogaster, and D. virilis) indicate that th…

Mutations in LMX1B cause abnormal skeletal patterning and renal dysplasia in nail patella syndrome

1998

The LIM-homeodomain protein Lmxlb plays a central role in dorso-ventral patterning of the vertebrate limb1. Targeted disruption of Lmxlb results in skeletal defects including hypoplas-tic nails, absent patellae and a unique form of renal dysplasia (see accompanying manuscript by H. Chen et al.; ref. 2). These features are reminiscent of the dominantly inherited skeletal malformation nail patella syndrome (NFS). We show that LMX1B maps to the NFS locus and that three independent NFS patients carry de novo heterozygous mutations in this gene. Functional studies show that one of these mutations disrupts sequence-specific DNA binding, while the other two mutations result in premature terminatio…

Matter dependence of the four-loop QCD cusp anomalous dimension: from small angles to all angles

2019

We compute the fermionic contributions to the cusp anomalous dimension in QCD at four loops as an expansion for small cusp angle. As a byproduct we also obtain the respective terms of the four-loop HQET wave function anomalous dimension. Our new results at small angles provide stringent tests of a recent conjecture for the exact angle dependence of the matter terms in the four-loop cusp anomalous dimension. We find that the conjecture does not hold for two of the seven fermionic color structures, but passes all tests for the remaining terms. This provides strong support for the validity of the corresponding conjectured expressions with full angle dependence. Taking the limit of large Minkow…

Constraints on Conformal Windows from Holographic Duals

2009

We analyze a beta function with the analytic form of Novikov-Shifman-Vainshtein-Zakharov result in the five dimensional gravity-dilaton environment. We show how dilaton inherits poles and fixed points of such beta function through the zeros and points of extremum in its potential. Super Yang-Mills and supersymmetric QCD are studied in detail and Seiberg's electric-magnetic duality in the dilaton potential is explicitly demonstrated. Non-supersymmetric proposals of similar functional form are tested and new insights into the conformal window as well as determinations of scheme-independent value of the anomalous dimension at the fixed point are presented.

Computing black hole entropy in loop quantum gravity from a conformal field theory perspective

2009

Motivated by the analogy proposed by Witten between Chern-Simons and conformal field theories, we explore an alternative way of computing the entropy of a black hole starting from the isolated horizon framework in loop quantum gravity. The consistency of the result opens a window for the interplay between conformal field theory and the description of black holes in loop quantum gravity.

Weyl Invariance and Black Hole Evaporation

1995

We consider the semiclassical dynamics of CGHS black holes with a Weyl-invariant effective action for conformal matter. The trace anomaly of Polyakov effective action is converted into the Virasoro anomaly thus leading to the same flux of Hawking radiation. The covariance of semiclassical equations can be restored through a non-local redefinition of the metric-dilaton fields. The resulting theory turns out to be equivalent to the RST model. This provides a mechanism to solve semiclassical equations of 2D dilaton gravity coupled to conformal matter for classically soluble models.

Horizon geometry, duality and fixed scalars in six dimensions

1998

We consider the problem of extremizing the tension for BPS strings in D=6 supergravities with different number of supersymmetries. General formulae for fixed scalars and a discussion of degenerate directions is given. Quantized moduli, according to recent analysis, are supposed to be related to conformal field theories which are the boundary of three dimensional anti-de Sitter space time.

The Segre embedding of the quantum conformal superspace

2018

In this paper study the quantum deformation of the superflag Fl(2|0, 2|1,4|1), and its big cell, describing the complex conformal and Minkowski superspaces respectively. In particular, we realize their projective embedding via a generalization to the super world of the Segre map and we use it to construct a quantum deformation of the super line bundle realizing this embedding. This strategy allows us to obtain a description of the quantum coordinate superring of the superflag that is then naturally equipped with a coaction of the quantum complex conformal supergroup SL_q(4|1).
